orion,

you said in an earlier post that you could disable PAT/GAT in the bios. In bios 13 I cannot find a way to disable it. You can set everything to auto under GAT, but that doesn't disable it according to cpu-z-118c. I also read that running anything besides 1:1 disables GAT, but when I choose 4:5 (my only other choice with a 2.4B besides SPU at 533 strap) cpu-z still tells me performance mode is enabled. Did I miss something somewhere else in the bios?

I have read about some people are flashing back to bios 13b1 or 13b3 to disable PAT and get better memory bandwidth. I have never flashed backwards..is that risky or no big deal? One final question in the beta bios zip there are only 2 files (the .BO3 file and the awdflash), but when I flashed from the original (10 I think) to 13 there was an ABITFAE and a runme file...do I need those to flash back to one of the betas. Thanks. Sorry for the questions that I am sure are old hat for most around here. New at this flashing backwards stuff....

Do a search on Abit Forums for IS7 and BSODs. You'll find that most BSODs caused from the IS7 are from PC3200 memory and tight ram timings. Unless you like running at cas 2.5 and looser ram timings, I suggest you go for PC3500.

Well, this is the first machine I've built, so I'm not sure what tight ram timings mean. I'm assuming that they mean "better" performance. I'm more concerned about stability. If I have to sacrifce and small bit of performance...thats fine. But if I could get both, that'd be even better. I take it from your post that 3500 would give me that. BUT, I've also read that the 3500 stuff is just an overclocked 3200. Not sure what my next step would be. I'll look at the Abit Forums in the mean time.

I am running the IS7 with Windows 2000. Have SP3 and all lastest hotfixes and security update from windows update. All my devices has the drivers properly loaded for it except for one. I have a yellow exclamation mark on Universal Bus Controller. I can't seem to find any drivers off the CDROM or Abit's website that will fix this problem.

Anyone out there running Win2K SP3 with the IS7?

Nevermind. I found the solution. To install the correct driver, read this Microsoft Knowledgebase article and install the "Microsoft USB Driver Version 5.1.2600.0." If the driver did not show up under Microsoft Windows Update, like it didn't for me, follow the instruction to download and install manually.

KB319973

Resolved my problem perfectly.

Tight ram timings mean faster running RAM by reducing the latency. Tight RAM timings on the IS7 even SPD timings may cause BSODs for PC3200 RAM. PC3500 is overclocked PC3200, but its the best of the crop and tends to run a lot better than the PC3200. If you do you want use the cheaper PC3200, you'll have loosen the RAM timings to something like CAS 2.5.

Hi guys,

I am currently running a IS7-E on BIOS version 1.3. I noticed that whenever i restart my PC from Windows (XP Pro), it will refuse to POST. Pressing the reset button, the PC would power-off for a short while and power-on again, but the machine still would not POST. The only way to get it to POST is to turn off the power for a while, then power-on the PC again. Previously, i did not encounter this problem on the 1st BIOS revision. Did anyone encountered the same problem as me?

My machine specs:
IS7-E with P2.4C (default settings)
2x256MB Kingston CL2.5 DDR400 (at SPD timings)
Gainward Ti4200-8x 128MB
HEC 6AU6 with Antec 480W PSU
Quantum 40GB HDD
Creative 24X CDROM
Acer 12x8x32x
Soundblaster Live Value

I thought in the new bios it was disabled in anything other than 1:1. If this is not correct then I have some more tweaking to do. You can flash back to the any bios. The extra files are just so you don't have to type anything. Just run the .bat file and it does the rest. In the beta you have to type awdflash and then enter the bios you want to flash. I preferr to do it myself so that I can back up my old bios just incase...

I think it is just for the IC7. I downloaded it before I realised it was for the canterwood boards. Maybe one will come our way soon. Thanks for yur response.

well, if the IS7 is like the P4P800 than anything over FSB 200 will disable PAT no matter the ratio you use.

Hi there.

Neutraliser, ketchup 79:

Thanks alot for the info. I didn't have time until now to check up on this thread, and I am grateful that you took the time to answer my questions, it really helps in deciding if I should upgrade now or if I should wait for the prescott.

I've decided that upgrading now is the way to go, looking forward to putting a rig together

K.

Not sure if you've figured this out yet, but what's your CPU strap set on? If it's on 667, you've got performance mode ON. I'm using bios 1.3.

The only fix is to use a PCI soundcard. Sound problems on the IC7 & IS7.

Anyone notice that the Abit IS7 has a volting problem. I was running my Corsair XMSPC3200C2 @ 2.65 V and hardware doctor read it as 2.66 V. At 2.7 V, hardware doctor still reads 2.66V.

I've noticed the voltage issue also. My Hardware monitor shows my CPU Core voltage as 1.47 when it's set at 1.52, DDR shows 2.72v when set to 2.8v.

What does this 667 set the memory to?

Sorry... should have posted this msg more clearly
Just checked out the manual: That's the N/B Strap CPU option in the SoftMenu Setup. [PSB667] sets FSB at 166MHz.
I just don't understand why it has to be this setting to get the performance mode. Is this the same case for other mobos?

It is for other brands of Springdales that allow you to trick the system into enabling PAT.

On the Canterwood (875) Intel automatically has the chipset enable PAT when you run at an N/B Strap of 800 at a synchronous (1:1) CPU/DRAM ratio. When they package the dies in the 865 PGA package, they disable that feature by disabling a pin(s). Asus, and later Abit, figured out that you could trick the 865 chipset into enabling PAT with an N/B Strap of 667.

cpu-z-118c must be wrong because it tells me I am in performance mode under the memory setting whether I set the cpu strap to 533,667 or 800. I was confused about how to turn it off. I have not noticed any benefits from setting the strap to 667. My best performance with a 2.4B so far is 533 strap/1:1/all GAT settings to auto/2-5-2-2 memory timings/fsb 156/dram and cpu voltage at stock. Haven't cranked up the voltages yet to see if I can push it farther. My perfromance (whether cpu is @ stock or OCed) always decreases when I start messing with the GAT settings like street racer,F1 and all the junk underneath it. I have 2 sticks of Geil ddr 433 so I should be able to throttle the ram pretty good. I am wondering if GAT/PAT is just better with the 800 bus cpus? So far GAT/PAT on my system seems like a big marketing hype that does nothing.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but where in CPUIZ 1.18 do you see if "Performance Mode" is on or not? I've looked through all the pages and see no mention of it.

I'm running:
IS7
P4 2.4B @ 167fsb (3Ghz)
DDR ratio 1:1
strap 667
timings are 5-2-2-2
GAT = Street Racer

You need to have version cpu-z-118c. Then look under the memory setting and you will see performance mode enabled or disabled.

NST,
what are your voltage settings for cpu and ddr? I am unstable at 3gigs with my 2.4B, but haven't bumped the voltages more than one notch. Good to fsb160 then it reboots during a benchmark. I would be curious how far you had to push them if at all to get stable at 167fsb. What are your temps? (eventhough all temp readings on these boards are suspect.....)
