I'm getting an ABIT IS7 and I have 3 HDDs. A Western Digital 120gb, a Maxtor 120gb, and also a Maxtor 80gb. I want to do RAID 0 with the 120s. How am I going to do this with 3 ATA drives?

Just saw these IDE to SATA converters, I take it I'll have to buy a pair? So then I hook the 120s up to the converters, stick them in the SATA slot, then put the 80gb in a ATA slot? Either that or buy an ATA RAID controller? It would probably be smarter to buy the converters cause then I'd have the two ATA slots open, right?

Someone else mentioned that they think the mobo comes with ATA to SATA adapters? Is that correct?

FYI - The Maxtor 120 model number is L01P120, the WD 120 is WD1200JB, and the Maxtor 80 is 6Y080P0.

Thanks

Dgath, I got 1 gig of Mushkin Black 3500 for $246 including shipping(fridays is free shipping day) and a 10% off for anantech subscribers. And this info is in the Mushkin site. I hope this help for the overclockers of memory out there:

ABIT IS7

ABIT IS7: Intel i865PE Springdale (Intel website)

The ABit IS7 uses a trick to bypass Intel's restrictions on the Springdale chipset, that is, even at the 800 MHz PSB, the additional pipeline stages in the memory address and command path are not activated. This, essentially, turns the Springdale into a pseudo-canterwood with all performance benefits associated with the more expensive Canterwood chipset but no support for ECC. In theory, the Springdale should work similar to the Canterwood, however, keep in mind that the dies used there are not validated for Performance Acceleration Technology. This, in turn, means that there are no guarantees that the performance modes will actually run stable. Because of this "cheat" beyond Intel's specifications, we are only scratching the surface of potential issues and bugs at this point.
With the samples at hand, we still found the IS7 100% compatible with all Mushkin PC3200 and PC3500 Black series. Keep in mind that it is necessary to populate the board with a minimum of two identical DIMMs in the complementary slots in order to get "Dual Channel" performance.

USER TIPS: enabling any of the different performance options will override the manual latency and frequency ratio settings and force a 1:1 CPURAM ratio at 2:x:x:x latency settings, with the "Ultra" (now "F1") setting forcing a 2:2:2:5 latency configuration at DDR400 frequency.

The same issues apply to the IS7 as what we listed for the IC7: using the "Turbo" (or "Street Racer") setting at 2:2:2:7 yields overall better performance since a longer tRAS prevents the controller from inadvertently terminating an ongoing data burst. Enabling the CPC (Command Per Clock) adds another small notch to the overall performance but can cause stability problems as well. The Read Delay timer should be set to 5-6 cycles for best stability and performance or else left on Auto.

We found that DIMMs that require CAS latencies of 2.5 or higher at DDR400 will not function in any of the available performance modes. The workaround is to set the performance tab to "Disabled". Even though this appears counterintuitive at first, it makes sense in that there is no point in reducing chipset latencies when the memory itself would add those latencies again at the back-end of the "food chain". The HW monitor shows voltage values that are below the real voltages, so better not crank them up too much.

Keep in mind that these recommendations are based on "snapshots" of a few of the current BIOS revisions and may change with future BIOS versions.

RECOMMENDED DIMMs
256MB PC3200 Level2 Black
512MB PC3200 Level2 Black
256MB PC3500 Level2 Black
512MB PC3500 Level2 Black

Dgath, I posted this question on the Abit forums and as soon as I get an answer, I will let you know:

"I got a new Is7, but I have 3 hard drives and a CDRW and DVD.
Can I use the SATA channel as IDE? or whats the solution to my problem? Thx in advance for the help."

Awsome, thanks. You thought of it before me, along with those 3 HDD (I'll add my 4th sitting around if there is room, 8 gb) I will have to have my CD-RW and DVD connected as well, so that is 5 PATA drives. I'm thinking it looks like I'll have to buy an ATA controller. Maybe I just won't put the 80gb in there for now and wait on buying an ATA card. I dunno, I could definately use some advice here it looks like. And thanks for the memory advice, I already bought mine though a few days ago, Hyperx 3200.

So I'll plug my two optical drives into the ATA slots on the motherboard, then I'll have to get converters to be able to plug my 120gb drives into the SATA slots and do RAID. Then if I want to use the 80gb, I'll have to buy another ATA controller card. Damn, that's another $70 for the converters and the ata card? Grrrr...

Dgath... I found the answer....Is on the "quick installation guide" of the motherboard page 4 under serial ATA connectors. It reads" It is also possible to connect legacy IDE hard disk throug an optional SERILLEL 2 converter" I hope this help

BTW: I have not build my PC yet, waiting 4 video card, audio card and headphones. Migth need help later

Ok, well here's what I've found out during my lunchbreak...

Totally forgot that you can have two ATA devices per ATA slot, so I'll have my DVD and CDRW on the same ribbon connected to IDE1. I'll have my Maxtor 80gb connected to IDE2. Then I guess I'll have to buy PATA to SATA converters and connect my two 120gb HDDs to those and have them as SATA1 and SATA2 and run RAID 0 that way.

It looks like the IS7 doesn't come with any Serillel2 converter package (I think only the IC7-G does) so I'll have to buy two of those. Can anyone confirm their IS7 didn't come with a Serillel2 package?

I don't think you'll want to do RAID 0 with two different drives, even if the same the same capacity. Since they have different geometries and you're striping data cross them, you will end up with the worst case access times for each drive. At least if they are the same you don't get any worse access times than a single drive, but double (or so) the transfer rate.

The highpoint SATA adapters work well and you can definitely use them for this app.

Just a quick update on my problem ... I bought a pair of 512MB Kingston HyperX PC3500 today at Best Buy for $120ea. (WOW)! Pulled the Corsair, popped in the HyperX, and my "mysterious problems" went away. Odd, because Corsair is usually the really good stuff, but suffice it to say that I'll be RMA'ing the Corsair back to NewEgg. Apparently, it's a known issue with the SPD not being read correctly, and the RAM ending up being run at specs other than what it's capable of.

Well I've gotten a lot of feedback from others who were using two different drives and they said it was pretty good. But I'm thinking I'll take my Maxtor back to Best But that I just bought yesterday (still unopened) and get a refund, because if I want to do RAID I'll have to buy the converters (another $50) and hope they work well with my setup. So I think I'll just wait to do RAID until I either want to because of performance or I have the money to burn. I'm upgrading from a P4 Celeron with 128 megs ram to a 2.8c with a gig of 3200 ram, I think I'll be quite happy with the performance of computer.

You do not want to put the CD=RW and DVD on the same IDE channel if you are going to make DIsk to disk copies.. It is much faster and more reliable to use the DVD and CD=RW on different IDE ports.

hi

Orion, can u help me to verify my problem..? Is it really BIOS problem that can't recognise my RT100(PCI video capture card). Something that give "blank" to my monitor when start up...

Anybody came upon to this before.

Haha... wow, never knew that. And I definately make CD copies so thanks! Ok, so since after all I'm just using two HDDs and two optical drives. I'll just put my 120 gb as master IDE1 and CDRW as SLAVE IDE1 and then my 80gb as Master IDE2 and my DVD as SLAVE IDE2. Yeah, that seems right. Sorry first time builder.

The only thing I can recommend is trying it in a different PCI slot. Does the manufacture give any support. My card is in slot 3. I' not sure what the RT100 is.

Hi,

Got a couple of questions regarding the IS7? First, does the BIOS 14 update still have the PAT/GAT, cuz somewhere I read that intel was going to somehow physically disable the "bypass" on the new sprindale's, and therefore the BIOS's will take that option out. Any truth to this?

Second, I am wondering is it possible to monitor all of the fans on my abit is7? Through the hardware monitor provided by ABIT, I can monitor the CPU/NB/SYS fans. However, the IS7 has 2 additional AUX fan ports. I have fans plugged into both of these. Is there a way I can view the RPMs that they are at? Is it supported by the Mobo? Also, what program should I get if it does support it, since the one provided by ABIT cannot display it. Thanks.

I have a Plextor cdrw on the same cable I got my DVD player and make copys with no problem and Fast. The only thing is that the CDRW have to be the master, It wont work on the same cable as slave. Hard drive... Put the bigger HD as master.

You will notice a difference if they are on different IDE ports.

Hi Orion,

I think PCI latency is only 32 bit, can I set it higher...? Can somebody explain how to tune PC, something like this(I know it's OC thing, but I don't know how it works).

-----------------------
I got my P4 2.4C to run at 3.0 GHz using the 5:4 divider and 250 FSB. My memory is still at 200 MHz and with 2-5-3-3 timings. Would 2-5-3-3 yield better performance or 2-6-2-2?

BTW I'm running core voltage at one step above default, is it possible to run 3.0 Ghz at core default voltage?

by Nutralizer
----------------------
1. How to set DRAM:CPU ratio (mine is 2.4Gb 533MHz:512Mb 333MHz Kingston DRAM) ?
2. What is that 250 FSB, and how to set correctly for my case?
3. My default timing is 2.5-7-3-3, can I do something to increase the performance?
4. How about the CPU core voltage, must tune?

Thanks

I read That some peps are having problems with the kingston memory. Here is a link(copy and paste) of the memory that Abit suggest.(kingston is one of them)

I have always use Mushkin and loved. Just look for discounts and free shipping Abit compatible memory

By the way... There is a 10% discount cupon for muskin on the main page of anandtech and fridays are free shipping day(if they have not changed)

I just got some new memory from OCZ (man they have excellent customer support) and I have gone from 250fsb 5:4 to 275fsb 5:4 on my 2.4C. The first set I had bought from newegg would do the 250fsb and I sent them an email saying I could not do over 200fsb at 1:1 (this is PC3500 btw). They sent me a Dual channel kit that would do 217 (rated speed) 1:1 but would not run at 5:4. They just sent me some stuff that they said would do 260fsb @ 5:4 and I am happy since I have been able to go higher. Now if Abit would alow us to increase the dram voltage I could probably go higher. OCZ is specd at 2.9V.

The OCZ seems to be the king as of today.
With their PC3700 Gold and now PC4000, ppl are
getting some pretty awsome results. Their customer
service was for poop but now they seem to have got
their act together.
