New modded BIOS, released by -=Merlin=- over at the Abit forums, for the Abit NF7-S R2. The biggest attraction to this BIOS is the inclusion of CPUID strings for XP-M chips! Check it out:

LINKAGE

I'll be trying this later after dinner.

Remember that those are for version 2.0 motherboards.
(dissapointed no one is modding BIOS for us 1.x owners)

I specified that in my post. I don't want anyone flashing their BIOS with a noncompatible version either.

Noid, why don't you PM tictac or Merlin and ask how they do it. Perhaps you can do the modding for the 1.x owners.

Ok ,,, this is the time for the v1.x owners to speak up

I'm chatting with "trats" over on AMD forums

I hoping to make a version of the 26 BIOS with CPC OFF right now...

BUT !

He also asked me if I want any of the D10 sip(s) applied to the 1.x BIOS.
(I dont know what to ask for)
I'm unfamiliar with the benefits the D10 BIOS sip(s).
So, anyone that wants a particular D10 mod appied to the v1.x series should speak up now!

Another new modded BIOS for the R2 boards from Merlin.

Look Here.

I loaded D26_ver.2.0.03_Seed_Fire_0.2_15.09.04 and with all identical settings my system performs better this BIOS. I need to Prime for a while though to make sure everything is kosher.

Check out the CPC Enabled version of tictac's D26 Manta Ray XT modded BIOS. I am running on my system right now. I am able to pass all the Prime95 FFT size tests with my mobile 2500+ running at 2.41GHz. What's even better is that I am using the CPC Enabled BIOS with 2 x 512MB sticks of double sided PC3200 and Memtest86+ passes all tests.

Another sweet benefit is that this BIOS is coded to allow mobile XP chips to be recognized as AMD Athlon XP-M chips rather than Unknown CPU Type. Until Abit releases a stock BIOS that does that I am sticking with this BIOS.

This is Merlin's latest modded BIOS, codename TaiPan .1. I just installed it, the memory scores I've received so far exceed those received with tictac D26 Manta Ray XT installed. My 3DMark2001 SE score went up by almost 200 points, pushing me up to 18,908.

Here are the release notes:
- Indifikation Mobeil AMD Athlon XP-M
- Romsip Bios Tables Cpu Interface 133 & 166 & 200 MHz (Romsip Modded by -=Merlin=-)
- TaiPan 0.1 (Optimised 200FSB Register)
- L12 mod built-in
- Bpl 3.02 Cpc On
- ABIT Configuration DEFAULT

You can find talk about the BIOS HERE.

I just got an abit nf7-s v2.0 and would like some help with software installation. Are there any particular drivers better than others? Is there a bios that's better than others? Any quirks I should know about or any installation tips?

I don't even know if this thread is still being followed.

New BIOS 28 for 1.x mb's released 10/12/04

Hid "CPU Disconnect function" default to AUTO.

I dont know if this is good or not.

The CPU disconnect is supposed to tell the CPU to idle.

I will investigate tomorrow.

Also think about getting the Black Mantaray D26. Cool boot up screen and very fast startups. Great overclocks as well.
It's made by Tictac.

BTW..the smiley face is the link

I tried both and both are great. No doubt about it. But in the end I decided to stick with Taipan. Mostly because of aesthetics... But truthfully, on my system I got better memory scores while using the Taipan BIOS with all settings being the same.

What BIOS can you guys recomend to me.

Thinking I need L12 mod built-in and want cpc on.

I'm just looking for something uber stable at maybe 220mhz

Also which method do you like to use when flashing? Looks like there are 3. Which one's best/safest for a nOOB. Don't wanna F/U my board.

Thanks,

Fern

^^ for which flash method you guys are using.

Over at LVcoyote's site, he mentions 3 methods (1) Abit Flash Menu, (2) Alt F2 method, and (3) Boot from floppy.

Which one you guys like?

Also, how do I back up current BIOS. Where is the file and whats is called?

Thanks,

Fern

Hi,
I've had this motherboard for about a year and a half now. I'm wondering what my upgrade options are at this point. This is my current setup:

Abit NF7-S Rev 2.0
AMD XP 2500 (333 FSB)
TwinX Mattched Pair 256(512Total) 333MHz Low Latency
1 512 MB Corsair Low latency memory
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
No overclocking at all

I know I can upgrade the Video card - I'd like to get a 6800 GT or something in that generation, but want the prices to drop. Is there middleground between that and the 9600 Pro where I would see a nice performance boost?

Will upgrading the processor really make a big difference? I vaguely remember reading a review when the XP 3000 or something like that came out, that criticisez AMD, becauase there was very little increase in performance - that it was more likley AMD wanting to market something that could compete with Intel new 3.0 GH processors. A year or so later though, maybe there is a different perspecitve now.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Shaggybrow,

I've had a similar rig (Great rig!!!) during a year and a half too:

Abit NF7-S Rev 2.0
AMD XP 2800 (333 FSB)
2X256 OCZ PC3200
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

I've ypgraded for a s939 mobo called ABIT AV8. It runs with a 64 3500+ CPU. I've kept my old Radeon 9700 pro. It overvlocks from 2.2GHz to 2.4GHz on stock fan very gently. I didn't even try to push it higher.

If you can it's worth the change!

Cheers

Hi Shaggy and Welcome to the Forums!

For the vid card, might look into a 6600GT (AGP version). I understand they're faster than a 9800Pro, so s/b a good step up from a 9600p.

About upgrading the cpu, yeah getting the FSB up to 200/400 would make your rig a bit quicker. But I don't think I would buy a new cpu & ram at this point in time. Might as well go to the 64bit platform for the $. If you had PC 3200 ram I might suggest a mobile cpu and OC it.

If your cpu is 1 1/2 yrs old it may be unlocked (pre-week 39 of '03), if so you can "upgrade" your cpu by OCing it. Up the multiplier and/or the FSB. You have all you need to do it with that mobo (well, you may need a better heatsink/fan if you're using the stock one).

hello all, check out my sig and see if anyone can collaborate on this theory...can ANYONE get an R2 above 220 fsb? as far as i can tell, my OC is maxed out. i'm at 1.825vcore...i'f i go to 1.85, i can't post, if i go to 11.5x i can't post. if i go to 218 fsb, i rarely make it through loading windows. i think just the fact that i got to 2.4ghz says that the cpu is capable of going much higher, though i don't know the stepping. even though i'm running PC3500, everyone on newegg who has OCed this ram claims to get it to at least 230, some 250, so i don't think thats my limiting factor.

Is it worth upgrading from a v1.x to a v2.x?

I'm having problems running memtest86+ on my NF7-S v1.x. So I was wondering it v.2.x would be worth upgrading to?

Thanks.

PS: Running Corsair PC3200C2PT @ DDR333 2.5>3>3>6 (timings from The RAM Guy).

Gettting a new MB isnt going to fix your memory problem.

Make sure your chipset voltage is 1.7
Try different dividers
Check memory voltage.
try using 11,3,2 Cas 2

Yep, 1.7v

I also hve the cpu at 1.7v (HWM reads as 1.65 or 1.68), DDR is @ 2.7v. Memtest86+ will freeze at 37%.

I have a Truepower 430w. Maybe I need to up that puppy to TP500+.

Noid,

I just noticed you have your RAM voltage at 2.8v, how did you do this? I'm using the latest bios, and Im not able to select 2.8v, in fact I don't even see it in there.

It's the next menu item in voltage settings, below CPU voltage

'DDR SDRAM Voltage'

and it's just above the chipset voltage

If you never set the voltage for your DDR, your under volted.
(I think default is 2.6v)
