Hi everyone,
About two years ago, I became an owner of a small gym, which has now grown to a few locations. As any fitness studio should, we made the decision to get an AED and encourage our instructors to get CPR & AED certified.
Throughout the process, I learned a lot about how valuable CPR certification can be, especially when coupled with training on how to use AEDs. Over the last two years, I've developed a passion for spreading the word on CPR & AED training. CPR saves lives, but sometimes it isn't enough. The use of an AED can drastically increase the chances that someone will survive. For example, according to http://faculty.deanza.edu/donahuemary/stories/storyReader$1865:
These things will eventually be as common as fire extinguishers, but there's still a long way to go. Fortunately, for us geeks, there's work being done on AED delivery by drone...

Today, our newest gym location received its AED and I decided that today was the day I should post this thread. Fortunately, it's been mod approved!
I'm sure many of you were certified when you were younger. Perhaps you had a lifeguard or camp counselor job that required certification. However, most people who get CPR & AED certified let it lapse. When was the last time you received training? The gym aside, my best friend's father was saved by a bystander and an AED two years ago. He wouldn't be alive today without the work of that bystander and the use of an AED from a nearby hotel. The mother of the founder of the company who installs the AEDs for our gyms recently had a massive heart attack, and was saved by an AED. It's amazing to me how much these things save lives and how little the public knows about them.
My goal is to get 100 people who aren't CPR/AED certified certified by the end of July, and I think ATOT is the best place to start. Are you up for it? If you're not currently certified, and don't need it for a job (IE: where you'd have to get certified anyway), simply sign up for a class and take it, then PM me your address. In exchange, I'll mail you a nice thank you later and a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card. Trust me, you won't regret having this knowledge!
Are you up for the challenge? Feel free to discuss general AED & CPR discussion in this thread as well. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out!

"In June, 1999, Chicago's O'Hare Airport installed AEDs, located so that an AED was within one minute walking distance of anywhere in the airport. In the first ten months 14 cardiac arrests occurred and nine of the victims survived. That's a 64% survival rate, compared to 3% - 4% with CPR alone."
