Hi everyone,

About two years ago, I became an owner of a small gym, which has now grown to a few locations. As any fitness studio should, we made the decision to get an AED and encourage our instructors to get CPR & AED certified.

Throughout the process, I learned a lot about how valuable CPR certification can be, especially when coupled with training on how to use AEDs. Over the last two years, I've developed a passion for spreading the word on CPR & AED training. CPR saves lives, but sometimes it isn't enough. The use of an AED can drastically increase the chances that someone will survive. For example, according to http://faculty.deanza.edu/donahuemary/stories/storyReader$1865:

"In June, 1999, Chicago's O'Hare Airport installed AEDs, located so that an AED was within one minute walking distance of anywhere in the airport. In the first ten months 14 cardiac arrests occurred and nine of the victims survived. That's a 64% survival rate, compared to 3% - 4% with CPR alone."

These things will eventually be as common as fire extinguishers, but there's still a long way to go. Fortunately, for us geeks, there's work being done on AED delivery by drone...

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larryhu...one-to-deliver-emergency-shocks/#191b76bc19ac

Today, our newest gym location received its AED and I decided that today was the day I should post this thread. Fortunately, it's been mod approved!

I'm sure many of you were certified when you were younger. Perhaps you had a lifeguard or camp counselor job that required certification. However, most people who get CPR & AED certified let it lapse. When was the last time you received training? The gym aside, my best friend's father was saved by a bystander and an AED two years ago. He wouldn't be alive today without the work of that bystander and the use of an AED from a nearby hotel. The mother of the founder of the company who installs the AEDs for our gyms recently had a massive heart attack, and was saved by an AED. It's amazing to me how much these things save lives and how little the public knows about them.

My goal is to get 100 people who aren't CPR/AED certified certified by the end of July, and I think ATOT is the best place to start. Are you up for it? If you're not currently certified, and don't need it for a job (IE: where you'd have to get certified anyway), simply sign up for a class and take it, then PM me your address. In exchange, I'll mail you a nice thank you later and a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card. Trust me, you won't regret having this knowledge!

Are you up for the challenge? Feel free to discuss general AED & CPR discussion in this thread as well. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out!

I have to renew my cert so I'll have to remember this thread when I do. I got my lifeguard cert as a teenager. I spent more time with Resus Annie than I ever did with girls. My mom was an EMT and CPR instructor so I had to keep practicing until the paper chart was perfect.

I'm already certified, but absolutely support this. CPR and predominantly AEDs are two of the most truly lifesaving practices out there.

i took my re-certification class in Feb. I needed it since the place I volunteer with helping kids requires it and pays for it.

I may need it for professional reasons. Unfortunately, I need the Standard First Aid and it's 2 days instead of the 1 day for CPR so I'm dragging my heels right now...

I'm fortunate to have a co-worker that is a part-time EMT and a certified teacher. So we can receive company sponsored training during work hours.

It's amusing when someone from another division hosts a meeting, and starts out with the standard safety briefing (take cover, evacuation ..) then asks if anyone is CPR certified and half of the room raises their hands

I'd love to know what the stats are, or if there are any predictions of the effectiveness, but it seems to me that an AED in the home, for older couples (50+), would save a lot more lives and cost less in the long run than home security companies.

Well it wasn't an AED but we had a guy who had both his legs blown off and some shrapnel in his lungs and he was in super bad shape but we kind of threw him around a bit and he ended up waking up. It was a pretty crazy day it started out like normal, he ended up stepping on an IED and then lost pretty much his lower half. Of course he was out for the event and we all swarmed him (bad idea) but he ended up waking up and going into shock. His left breast was rising really high compared to his right so we knew he had tension pneumothorax(sp?) so we ended up piercing his one side. He balanced out but was still having a hard time but we got him out of there. I like to think it was the quick thinking CPR of our medic that saved his life.

CPR is awesome and also the human body can survive some shit.

As a certified performer, I'm not saying it's useless but if you ask me the AED protocol is unnecessarily complicated for the layman. Doing it half to 90% assed is still better than not doing it at all.

-Call for help if you find someone collapsed.
-Place the pads, turn on the AED. Don't give a shit whether the person is actually having cardiac arrest or stopped breathing.
-If it advise you to do CPR, just pumping the chest deeply and rapidly.
-Clear and shock when it tells you to, otherwise keep pumping the chest until professional help arrives.

Not certified, but I read about CPR and watched some YouTube videos. Even created a topic in my forum about it. It's under survivalism. When I was a fire fighter explorer many years ago we went over it, but it has changed now. For one you don't breath air into the lungs anymore. Hands off is what the Mayo clinic recommends. Basically, you just compress the chest an inch and a half if I can remember and do that like no fucking tomorrow.

I looked into buying an AED for the house. eBay has them but you can't believe how many people bid on the damn things. Some don't even have a good battery!

This is cool. I like this.

I was CPR & AED certified but it has expired. I think. If it hasn't yet it will soon. I used to teach emergency first aid when I was a lifeguard. Bronze cross and star and all that jazz. I think it's incredibly important.

But AED is basically dummy proof as long as you have even just a basic understanding of what it is and what it does.

Just saw our city is offering certification ($10?) for CPR/AED next month I think (through FD).

Was lifeguard certified when younger, been CPR/First Aid certified a few times over the years, maybe even AED (I know we practiced, and they were basically completely automatic and self-explanatory), but anything I have is lapsed.

I should probably go get re-certified just for kicks. Heck, we have kids.

Can I request a healthier gift card? Otherwise, I should buy an AED and then just strap the leads on permanently and tell the kids where the ON button is when Daddy keels over.

Yes, definitely! I'm happy to get a different type of gift card.

Health care provider CPR certified (honestly not sure what the difference is, if there is any) and my renewal is in two or three months. My next step is ACLS certification. I'll probably do that over the summer.

Asked around a bit on this one. Apparently there's a study going on about this very thing, but I can't find it. I'm hoping my friend can provide a link

I was at a school gym playing volleyball one weekend just last month, and full court basketball was going on in the next gym over. One of the b-ball guys came running in in a panic and asked if any of us knew CPR. A fairly young guy (30s?) had collapsed on the b-ball court and they couldn't find a pulse. Our volleyball group was sharing the gym with a Zumba class, and fortunately, some of the ladies in Zumba (and the instructor) knew CPR, so two of the ladies began CPR on the guy. About 5-10 mins later, the police and EMTs arrived, with AED equipment. I heard from some of the b-ball guys two weeks ago that the guy who collapsed was going to be released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. I'm sure the fact that CPR was performed on him is why he's alive today.

This is a really worthwhile challenge manlymatt and kudos to you for suggesting it. I have to see what I can find in my area. I was CPR and First Aid certified 20 years ago, but never renewed since. I've heard its all different now.

Great idea. CPR and AEDs definitely can save lives.

And I'll say there's no more fulfilling experience in the world than to save a life. I've had a chance to meet a few of the people I've helped bring back, and it's absolutely awesome.

Several have been able to walk out of the hospital with complete recoveries (minus some stents and new found friendship with a cardiologist)
