We started getting excited about this performance at the $200 level then amd said $230-240 or whatever for the 8gb model and then the cards released and it's $250-260 now then we see aib models and we're in the $260-320 range.... And then we see the 1060 at $300 for the fe edition and then we know aib and other models will even be higher...

We essentially let a $200 price point performance level turn into a $300. Sorry this whole generation right now is a joke. Not buying right now. These prices are a joke from both companies.

What you talking about willis?

RX 480 is @ MSRP here. Much cheaper than discounted GTX 970 and 390s.

The only problem is the 4GB edition, AMD didn't make many because they knew it's full 8GB. But the 8GB ref, it's ~$239.

AIB models of the Nitro over in the UK, cost the same as the 8GB reference or $10 more.

Not sure about that. Microcenter still receives plenty at $239, guessing other bm stores as well. That's for the 8gb version.

Stock for the 480 is pretty disappointing imho.

...But you can still get them at MSRP when they come into stock. Got my 4gig for MSRP on Amazon. Backordered on the 7th, got it the 14th.

Yeap, we are back were we started in 28nm. I got my R9 390 at 270 Euro, custom RX 480 cards will be at the same price or higher for 5-10% higher performance maybe ???

I sure hope AIBs will make $200-220 4GB cards, otherwise perf/$ hasn't changed much if at all since late 2015.

Looks like those cheap 290/390 skewed consumer perception just as much as nvidia Titan line. Sadly for AMD, it changed in the opposite direction

People look at 1080 and appreciate how cheap it is compared to titanX.
People look at 480 and are let down it is not much cheaper than 290/390.

Hilarious.

Very true, and that is something AMD havent took seriously the last 3-5 years. Hawaii started as a $450 and $550 GPU and it was cut down to sub $300. So when you get another GPU 2-3 years later at the same sub $300 for almost the same performance then your perf/$ stays the same.

Now take NVIDIA, they keep their prices almost constant much like Intel. Now they going to release the GTX 1060 at $299 with GTX 980 ($499) performance.

People will get ecstatic paying $300 to get $500 performance, that is why NVIDIA get that love from people

From the same shop we used to evaluate the PowerColor Devil one can pre-order Sapphire Nitro 4GB for £210 with tax. Take away VAT and you end up with $230.

That means US pricing will be somewhere around $220. That's 10% over reference.

How did we let $200 turn into $300 again?

Can you answer why this is the case?

Nvidia has the marketing and better brand reception in the view of the public. Much like when you say smart phone and people think Apple, if you talk to most non technical people about gpu's I'm pretty sure they know nvidia more than amd.

Can you answer why this is the case?

Because their products were unchallenged for the most part of their life in the market.

GTX 780 at $649 May 2013, Challenged by Hawaii R9 290X at $549 in October 2013, but quickly replaced next month by the faster GTX 780Ti at $699 in November 2013.

Then NVIDIA released the GTX 980 at $549 in September 2014 that was faster than GTX 780Ti and R9 290X AND at lower power. The GTX 980 remained unchallenged almost until the release of the GTX 1070, yet another NV card and not an AMD card 6-8 months before.

Also, 2014-2015 NVIDIA had a new architecture (Maxwell) AND GameWorks games to boost sales. GTX 980 was unchallenged because most of the games used in Reviews were GWs in 2015 and early 2016.

So, that 1060 opening day sale went pretty quickly. (Only the $310 Asus is left and you have to be really really desperate and have a ton of cash to throw away.)

So anyone else here waiting for the US sale of the Sapphire Nitro version of the 480?

I am but if I can't get one of them seeing how quick the 1060's went, I'm going to end up spending some more money to get a new monitor and a 1070, so I can actually enjoy a card that meant for 1440p.

Overclockers UK has the RX480 Nitro+ 4GB for £199.99 on pre-order now!!

They also have an aftermarket Powercolor RX480 8GB for £235 and the Nitro(not Nitro+) for £240.

These aftermarket cards are all going to perform better than the reference ones used in the reviews today - looks like things are going to become interesting when the aftermarket RX480 cards are released.

Big question now is, will 4GB aftermarket cards actually contain 4GB or 8GB VRAM?

Probably 4GB, but I'd love it if someone could confirm relatively quickly on the off-chance they do actually have 8GB.

If they are new boards probably only 4gb. I saw the sapphire reference 4gb go in stock at amazon this morning. I'm sure it's actually a 8gb card.

Why does it take forever for the RX 480 AIB's to come up, but the 1060 AIB's are out on launch day?

Also any word on the RX 460? I need a new 4K HTPC video card.

The only 1060 you can actually buy right now is the $299 reference direct from Nvidia, the listings for the AIB versions are "sold out" and list at $309+. But I get your point it is taking a long time for AIB RX 480's to come out both AMD and Nvidia are obviously supply constrained to put it mildly.

This got posted in another thread about this:

Interestingly,Gibbo said on Overclockers UK they only had a few 100 GTX1060 for sale today and a few 1000 by the end of next week. They sold 2000+ RX480 cards in less than 24 hours(not pre-orders also it seems) at launch, and they have 2000 Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ cards alone coming in the next few weeks. He also had to say this about the aftermarket RX480 cards:

Quote: It is not the AIB's fault, AMD over-sold on reference so the GPU went to building more reference to clear those backorders.

Sapphire alone have 5000 backorders on RX 480 reference still to fulfill in just the UK alone, that is the reason.

People post so much BS up, the real reasons are simply RX-480 demand was way way above what AMD could ever predicted. Custom cards go into product this weekend at numerous board partners.

The Asus seems like it could be quieter but it's also going to be the more expensive one. The nitro should be perfect though if you don't care for the extra things on the asus like the shroud or lights.
Wut about the Devil by Powercolor? Clocked at 1366mhz with boost at1400mhz. Although the msrp touted for it is about $300 plus. I suspect that the price may come down, with release of others. Well, there's hoping.

The article I referenced earlier about the powercolor that said $312 is most likely wrong. Oc UK has it for pre order for £10 more than their reference 8gb card last time I checked.

That should put it in the US price range of $270 minus VAT. It should be a good overclocker seeing how it has boost at 1400 from factory meaning you could probably push it 10% more.

Of course we haven't heard any solid dates for these except for the asus which is scheduled for middle of August.

Then again I missed the nitro fury on sale today for $299. I'm thinking the 480 is a great 1080p card at the 4gb vram mark for the $200 range.

Many reviews mentioned the 8gb currently didn't offer any more performance, or it was slight if anything.

Once these cards go north of $250 I have second thoughts because who knows if I'll be in the mood to upgrade to big Vega or not by the time it comes out. I may want to hold on to the card longer.

For now I'm gaming at 1080p but I've been considering getting a 1440p monitor just not sure how soon to do it. Which would mean the fury, 980ti, or 1070 would be a better choice if I go this route and decide to stick with the card for another 3-4 years.

Only 10 pounds more than reference card in UK prices.

The Nitro is also at reference prices too. Not bad if they can match reference card on price and it's a better cooler!

I think I've missed something, but how come 480 didnt have aib cards since day 1 like 1060? (and still doesn't). Almost same situation as when r290 reference throttlers were compared to nvidia OC cards.
