Well it's a big step for them, Hawaii vs Maxwell was much much worse.

As for performance:

Power usage for Asus 480 is onpar with custom 1060. Performance is single digit % different. Pretty close and these guys didn't include the other DX12 titles.

Guess what happens when they throw in a few more DX12 titles in their benchmark suite? We'll see it in a few months.

Looks like the first Red Devil RX480 review is out.

Interesting numbers, very good balanced card and they made the silent bios almost as 1060 power consumption. Of course not at the same performance.

Looks like AMD has managed to work through, or more probably, around the nvidia gameworks handicap.

I like it when AMD does this!

The new drivers boosted Rise of the Tomb Raider by a lot for RX 480. Really close to MSI Gaming 1060 now.

RoTR was the only game with DX12 codepath where Nvidia won big. With AMD cutting down that gap significantly this means AMD's avg DX12 performance in reviews will go even further up. Add Doom Vulkan and you are going to see a >10% gap on DX12 / Vulkan games which figure in reviews. AMD should keep improving performance on games where they are current weak like GTA V, BF4, Anno 2205. In the next few months a slew of high profile DX12 titles are going to launch (most of them AMD Gaming Evolved) and as those are added we will see Rx 480 do even better. But I still think the real deal will be when AMD can fix those clock/power issues due to state of GF 14LPP with a second revision. Rx 485 in Q1 2017 could be the real deal with outstanding DX12 / Vulkan perf and improved perf/watt.

I just canceled my Amazon order for the 8Gb Nitro + on the reviews by Hexus and kitguru and the rest. I'll try to find the Nitro in 4Gb. In the meantime, the 7950 and the 6950, are my stable workhorses. Perhaps, in November, I can time it so that I get an HDR-ready TV (I have a rear-projection 1080i HDTV right now) and a video card to exploit it too.

Of course, I'll probably still be waiting on the fiber to come to my door so that leaves out any possibility of 4K over the network. (I've got bonded DSL which is better than just DSL but doesn't cut it for 4K minimum speeds.)

NCIX have the 480 Nitro Pre-Orders up in Canada. Price looks a tad on the high side, but demand is apparently very high for them. US site should be coming up soon.

No AA.
Someone should test how good polaris is at dealing with obscene AA settings. How geometry culling helps it with comparison to other cards, 390X especially

Question: What else AMD haven't told us about Polaris 10. I feel like they are still hiding something. What's the secret sauce?

Also, can anyone bring up Polaris 10 full die showing 2306 not being the magic number but 2916 is? Thanks.

I do not know if they really have a polaris with more than 36 compute units, but...
While sifting through various forums about 3d , consoles and graphic cards. I read that the GCN cards might very well be capable of receiving microcode updates. Effectively handling bugs, removing (to a degree) bottlenecks or giving new functionality to existing gcn gpu's (as seem to be proven by old gcn versions getting speed boosts with new drivers). For as far as i found out, this is mostly limited to the ACE and HWS but who knows what common CPU technologies AMD have put into the gcn architecture.

FYI, there's a good amount of stock of 1060s in most Canadian retailers, they just aren't moving much. It's the demand for 480s that is through the roof.

Fans of each company buying the best of new architecture their favorite company can produce? So an nVidia fan would have bought a 1070/1080 already instead of a 1060?

i'm guessing miners are driving 480 sales and performance buyers are driving 1080/1070 sales. in contrast, no one was really waiting for the 1060 - you could have had its performance already if you were willing to spend the $$ the last couple of years. so you wait on the natural cycle of mid range people upgrading, which is much slower.

Stock of 1070 & 1080 cards were never a real problem, they are usually readily available. At least in Canada.

Main reason I figure, goes not just for Canada but many countries right now like the UK, many parts of Europe..etc.... The very bad exchange rate on the USD brings a 1080 just shy of $1,000 CAD. It's a lot less attractive at that price, like buying a $1,200 Titan in the States. The 1070 is similarly not at a very attractive price except for the biggest of fanboys.

As for the 1060, the new APIs kinda make it a stillborn IMHO, not to mention that yes a 480 will also give a much more favorable ROI through mining which makes it essentially free within a few months.

Well, if you thought perhaps Amazon would have the AMD 480 cards...you missed the boat.

I keep some things in my cart because I'm lazy. I noticed this morning that presales of the Nitro 480 cards just went from presale to backorder to now unavailable. Oh you can buy it from some of the sharks out there. And seriously you are stupid to buy it, even the 8Gb model, at anything over $270.

Samsung must be helping AMD and GloFo for their mistakes. Also the RX 485 will come with GDDR5X

My prediction is R7 470 will land at R9 290 performance.Earlier i expected slightly faster than 380X but looking at the specs its only 15% slower than RX480 so R9 290 it is. This also means price will be higher? AMD will probably go with $169 msrp instead of the rumored $149.Reviews will be out soon so lets see what AMD can pull from its magic hat.
It will probably be priced at $250 where i live compared to $340 of RX480 and 1060.
