I just bought 2 of these. Not sure if I even want them anymore. I might buy a 1070 right now and refuse delivery on them.

But for the price... there's nothing better until the 1060. It's the only reason I bought 2. It's cheaper than current 970/390 by ~$60 here in Australia, cheaper than a GTX 980 by $200 and almost half the price of a 1070.

The price seems to vary be region. Where I am living the RX 480 seems to cost the same as the 970 / R 390.

From Techpowerup.com:

"What's even worse than the heat is the terrible fan noise. While idle noise is fine with 29 dBA (an idle-fan-off feature would still have been nice), in gaming the fan ramps up a lot, emitting 41 dBA noise during gaming (not Furmark). This makes the RX 480 the loudest card launched in recent history, much noisier than for example GTX 1080 (which is almost twice as fast).

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/29.html

Their own chart shows that a 980Ti was louder. That is a stupid thing for them to say. Also, 41db is not very loud at all.

The single vs dual GPU alone should make it easy to pick. Else 150W Vs 320W as another reason. VR a 3rd, Noise a 4th and so on.

Polaris dont have VP9 decode either in hardware.

You only SLI/CF 2 top end GPUs anyway, not low end stuff.

so as expected 390 performance for 200$ msrp. for those of you who wants to oc, AIB is what you need to wait for.

PS: guys check out the anadtech preview/review comments section, it is infested with the same troll we had been dealing with.

It is. But face reality. The GCN uarch is horrible behind as well. And its not going to improve with the R&D budget there is.

Time to move into reality and leave all the hype and fairytales behind
.

If you say so, it must be the absolute truth.

Just need to decide if I'm picking up 1 or 2 reference or go for AIB models... decisions, decisions...

970-ish performance is just okay the power consumption is a major disappointment the 1070 is only a few watts more for obviously much better performance. Overall I'd say a swing and a miss for AMD things don't look good for them going forward.

always AIB. why in such a hurry unless you absolutely need the blower?
The 1 nvidia sponsored dx12 title saw performance regress for everyone, any neutral dx12 games out there?
ashes is actually a superb, fair, dx12 game to benchmark.

anyone who tells you it is not is a shill. that is not an exaggeration. ()

if you need 1070 lvl of performance, never get 2 gpus as a replacement.

Polaris does support h265 encoding/ decoding in hardware, so i'd not be surprised if VP9 is something AMD marketing overlooked to add to slides.

Do you have any source to information which mentions that it is not present on the cards?

EDIT:
The video decoding seemingly does support VP9. So more a case of another AMD marketing fail, than hardware problem.

Last but not least, for media center duties as well as streaming (via Twitch as an example), the video decoding/encoding block on Polaris is the most potent solution AMD has ever offered. It can handle up to 4K60 Main-10 HEVC decode, 4K VP9, 4K30 MJPEG, and 4K120 H.264 decoding. That's pretty impressive, but AMD's not done yet. On the encoding side, the hardware supports H.264 at 1080p120, 1440p60, and 4K30, and for HEVC (H.265) Polaris can do 1080p240, 1440p120, and 4K60. Polaris also supports 2-pass encoding, which can help improve quality without increasing the bitrate, though that won't be useful for live streaming.

Although, i wonder if it does support MS playready 3.0, but i'm sure with VP9 decoding available, it may as well with a driver update, if not already.

So comparable to Dyson heater with a fan? Cheaper but more noisy.

The reference cooling design ducks. All 7 cards available today have it though.

This is not going to pressure 1070 cards price to come down. Looks like GTX 1070 is the winner for 2016... unless 1060 brings insane value

This is why you don't buy cards before official reviews.

Well, I was getting my order in as fast as possible in case stock was a limitation. I have been reading/watching reviews and its really a mixed bag but I may give the cards a try and see how they do.

if it hasn't been shipped, you can easily cancel. it is a great card, but not what you need.

Massive upgrade for the $200-240 bracket from 380 / 960 trash.

Another piece of evidence showing its always better to wait for AIB aftermarket versions of cards. First the FE debacle, and now a clearly price-optimized and not performance optimized cooler. I appreciate the ability to get this thing down to $200, which will be nice for mainstream builds and my guest PC.

Crossfire performance is fantastic when it works. But engines aren't friendly. I can't recommend CF or SLI to anyone today until they're at the high end.

At work so cant read all the reviews. Did read anand's. Looks like overall performance lower than 390. So much for the hype of 390x or better performance. Power consumption does not look *that* bad, based on the anand tests. So overall not a bad product, but not a home run either, and as usual was highly overhyped.

Also outside AMD sponsored titles?
The only way current Nvidia cards can compete in the future for DX12 game performance superiority is if they sponsor the game. Otherwise, the trend is already happening.

How does the GTX 680 compare to the 7970 today?

How long before the GTX 970 falls off a cliff as Nvidia stops writing drivers to work around the .5GB problem?

Any review where all DX12 games were tested?

Thank you

DX12 is going to get really ugly for Nvidia on previous gen cards, not sure about Pascal. This is a bright spot for AMD but don't think it's enough to save them, maybe in 6 months but by then Nvidia will have again outsold them by a huge margin.

people seems to be forgetting this

I have a 290 tri x and I am probably not gonna upgrade for at least 1 more year. not because I don't want to, but there is no card in my price range with the performance I want.
