AMD presentation in Korea. Sounds like we may see RX460 and RX470 cards in approximately two weeks. All RX470 cards will be AIB partner custom cards - no reference coolers.

RX470:

No reference, reference:

So are they releasing the custom 480's as well as the 460 and 470's all at the same time. We haven't seen any custom 480 cards at all and it's been a while since launch. Wonder what happened.

I would just think AIBs are building inventory. If we go by what OCUK is saying, they ordered 2,000 Nitro 480 cards by themselves alone and that's just one brand of 480 cards. So basically AIBs have a choice of releasing earlier, but having a trickle of cards come out as they are produced and possibly lose control of end user pricing in the process, or building inventory.

I would guess AMD is suggesting they build sizable inventory quantities for mainstream products.

Yea I would hope so. If I need to wait another month after these come out this will suck. What also sucks is there is no pre order options for these aib cards. I know I want the xfx or nitro 480 for sure, but who knows when I'll be able to get one.

Asus Strix coming mid August. I don't know why they make their cards so long.

Anyways I hope sapphire and powercolor devil are out July 22. The 1060 is coming out the 19th which means it probably won't be reviewed against any of the AIB 480 cards.

Mid August and they will be sold out first day lol. I may not get anything until September or October at the rate things are going.

I need a card by August 2nd. So I'll buy whatever 480 is available at that time, though I'd prefer a non-reference design with the least amount of flash - no lights and backplate, please.

Power draw shifted more towards the 6 pin vs pci e slot. That's great for me as I prefer the power to be drawn from my beefy 750w evga power supply.

Exactly where do you think the pci-e slot gets its power from?

Unless you meant "directly from" your power supply.

yes directly from the power supply. I thought it was understood that pulling more through the pcie slot was a bad thing?

So MGPU where you can draw within spec 150W to 300W is a bad thing? Not that I'd want to pull that much through one slot. A few watts over isn't going to hurt anything though. Mobo's can supply a lot more than 75W through a pci-e slot.

For a custom card that can go over 150W easily, with factory OC & better cooling, it is indeed better to not have the GPU draw more than 75W consistently from the PCIe slot. This is also the reason why we're seeing most, if not all, custom cards switch to an 8pin at the very least.

Less is always better when it comes to power draw. That doesn't address my post though. Mobo's can easily supply well more than 75W through the pci-e slot. It's not dangerous or any kind of a hardship. Still AMD addressed it anyway. It's a non factor now.

We've been over this before, sure there a number of mobos that can & will support over 75W of power draw from the PCIe slot. That however was not an issue with high quality/recent boards, there are many budget systems out there with old, or fairly new MBs, but questionable power supplies that'll go kaput when you OC this card especially the AIB versions.
Therefore in the interest of everyone AIB's have gone 8pin & shifted power draw from the slot to the PSU, this will not only shield the MB & to a lesser extent PSU as well, but also AMD & the GPU maker themselves. You could say going 8pin is an idiot proof safety measure & in this care more is better IMO.

What's the supply on these things? The usual suspects (amazon & newegg) don't seem to have them in stock @ normal prices. It's basically out of stock everywhere. I thought they had a bunch of these cards available. Sucks. I actually wanted to get one for kicks and giggles because I like trying new tech.

The primary problem of the RX 480 is lack of availability of the custom models. I hate that the ref. model doesn't come with a DVI-D connector. No Vulkan benchmark is going to fix that, unfortunately. Might as well pay more for the 1070.

There was a very large initial supply (supposedly 20x the stock of the the 1070/1080) but they did sell out very fast, all for the reference designs.

The custom partner boards should start trickling out within the next week or two and, supposedly, those vendors had a very large stock to work with prior to the reference releases, so expect a new flood of those when they release.

But you better jump on them release day when they become available because it looks like they will be even more competitive.
