I don't see Polaris 10 getting that much lower in power at that speed. GCN as an architecture will always use more power than what nVidia has been putting out. AMD is not about to remove all their compute power, so their power usage is not going to drop. nVidia will eventually need to add compute back, or do some other major architectural change in the future for the DX12 world.

I am sure the 485 will be more efficient, but don't expect a huge drop in power consumption.

I think a 10-15% power reduction even with 10% higher clock speeds is possible. 120w might be difficult but 135w is possible. GTX 580 was running 10% higher clocks than GTX 480 and also drawing 30-40w lower power (roughly 10-15% lower power) as GTX 480 was a 270w GPU.

I am not saying its the same case here. Just that we do not know how much of the current limitations are due to process and how much due to design. I think AMD should be able to hit 1400 Mhz at 135w with a second revision.

Thats a two month old rumor article...

The 1050 is (now) rumored to be late fall release time. It would be the competitor to the RX 470. To our knowledge there is nothing that fits in to the RX 460 bracket from nVidia. Although the 1050 may be one of those chips that falls between those two.

Rewind: "we are months ahead in the finfet transition" :whiste:

Fact: As today, AMD has only Polaris 10 on shelves when Nvidia launched GP100, GP102, GP104 and GP106

Plus, JHH said to investors last quarter that all Pascal GPUs have been tape out and they will roll out very quickly. Moreover, everybody knows Nvidia is a fierce competitor so they won't let AMD alone in any segment (by price reduction or new product introduction). It's really not so hard to understand and I don't even know how we can argue...

You can launch one SKU every day, it says nothing if your volumes are that low as of today for both AMD and NV.

Unfortunately for AMD the GF 14LPP process has hampered its potential. This chip needed to clock at 1400 Mhz and draw power of 120w. I think we will see a second revision of Polaris chips as mentioned in the Rx 400 series naming scheme once the process issues are worked out. I think the Rx 485 will come in Q1 2017 and eventually prove to be a very good chip.

I would love to get Raja drunk and try to get out of him whether or not they're disappointed with the GF 14nm process or these are just design limitations with regards to power consumption. AMD packs a lot more under the hood than Nvidia does with compute and ACE's and I wonder if they'll ever be able to approach NVidia levels of efficiency with GCN without cutting things out of the design.

They dont have to cut down anything, GCN is extremely efficient if you use DX-12 and Vulkan. I will really like to see the power consumption of the entire system using Pascal dGPUs in DX-12 and Vulkan vs Polaris 10 and even Fury NANO.

None of the AIB reviews/leaks that I have seen even included DX-12 or Doom Vulkan which is extremely disappointing. So far I've seen like 8 titles 4 of which are GameWorks. The Nano really does give me hope that Vega might surprise us all in perf/watt and perf/$. I'm dying to get a next gen 1440p FreeSync monitor with HDR.

Everything pretty much points at nVidia launching earlier than they had intended. Their release quantities were laughably low. Several retailers have been very open about the quantities that they have received, and they have all stated getting SIGNIFICANTLY more RX480's than 1070/1080 combined. This shows that AMD was ready for launch well before actual launch, and held to their original date so that they could get high enough quantities to satisfy customers. nVidia released early, so they had almost not stock to satisfy retailers.

I kind of want to pre order one since I've been looking forward to these except I already ordered a Gsync monitor a day ago and now I'm looking for 1070's. Just curious how it would do.

Anything in particular you want me to check? I uh, might have ordered 4 of the 4GB model. Expect another 4GB teardown thread whenever I get them...

I'm mostly interested in what GDDR5 chip(s) they are using. Hopefully they are 8Gbps Samsung parts, but we will see. I think it would be wishful thinking to hope for 8Gb chips for 8GB unlockable, though.

For my pessimism about the 480 vs 1060 (prior to launch), I had said the perf per watt would make it non-competitive, but it is now clear I was wrong.

RX 480 are selling amazingly well within my region and a quick search globally shows the same trends.

On social media and tech forums, the reason for gamers buying 480 over the similar priced 1060 is always the same: future proofing. Looks like AMD's marketing push for these next-gen API and the Doom w/ Vulkan has really hit home.

AMD share just passed $6 mark (more than tripling within a few months!), if Zen delivers, we could see a return to $12 by the year's end.

I think you have a 1440p monitor and I suppose you will be running this at native resolution. I'm curious how most games would do at that res.

I like to play most newer games, currently I've held off on doom and Witcher 3 + the expansion so I could get a new card.

Although pairing it with a gsync monitor would be a waste yet since I want to go 1440p anyway the free sync monitor would have the same specs and cost the same. Just waiting on my order at best buy to process now.

Ended up getting this for $449 yesterday.

From TPU's front page pole. About 43% more for the 480.

I kind of guessed it would do pretty well. If I wasn't getting a 1440p monitor this would be a cheap upgrade for me as a stop gap.

There are a lot of people (the 1080p crowd) who this is all the card they need. It will likely last them for quite some time too as it's the latest generation games it's designed for. Not games made on an 8 year old API that should have been replaced with Vista.

Pretty sure there will be others getting the powercolor devil as well when it's out. I wonder why Amazon did not do preorders for it as well.

I thought about keeping my dinky little 21inch 1080p but it's getting washed out and hanging on until Vega would suck. At least next time if I go with an amd card I'll just have a smaller bill, only exception is gsync won't be used.

Weird when you filter by GPU then rx480 you don't see it. I had to google it to get to the newegg page. Looks like a long card.

I see it on desktop graphics front page now. I initially went by direct link at reddit though.

Damn best buy still saying is in process after a day for my 1440p monitor. If they cancel my order I will be pretty pissed because that's the only reason I'm not ordering either one of these.

Devil is out of stock. That took all of 3 minutes lol
