Lisa Su confirms in the presentation that the Ryzen 1700 (non-X) is 65W TDP with 3.0GHz base and 3.7GHz turbo. 8C/16T power in a mainstream package!
Now that I know the 1600x won't be releasing, I was thinking of trying the 1700. It could be ta sleeping dragon, sort of like the e5640.

So basically, the 1700(non-X), 65W TDP CPU gives exactly the same level of performance as 140W 5960X, at 1/3rd of price.

Yup. Competition was back. But now we have huge innovation, also.
It's not even a competition right now. Intel has nothing to offer to compete with amd's $/perf.

5.1 GHz with LN2... so hmmm. We're probably not looking at high clocker here on Air/water. Probably clocks like Broadwell-E?

Did people really think Zen defied the laws of physics and clocked to infinite? Above 4ghz is fine. If it can hit 4.5, then I will be very impressed.

That is pretty good for an 8c/16t chip. I'm just wondering how high the lower end 4c chips can overclock

That's 5.15GHz all core turbo, 16 threads. Can't really compare directly to a 4 core, IMO.

Hopefully that means 4.6-4.7 is achievable with water. I'll find out in a couple of weeks...

We need to come to accept that overclocking will be less and less of a thing as we move to smaller and smaller nodes.

I'm guessing 4.3 - 4.5Ghz. Still plenty for a 8/16 CPU.

7700K for gaming. 6900K is not ideal -- overpriced, worse IPC, lower clock potential, etc.

Stay far away from Broadwell-E if you are a gamer.

This reminds me of long ago when it was E8400 vs. Q6600. Yes that E8400 was much faster at games than the Q6600 at launch. But how long did it take buyers of the former to regret not future proofing? If I buy a cpu today, I expect it to last me at least 5-6 years or more. The question even gamers need to ask is, do I think the 7700k will still be better at gaming years from now?

There absolutely aren't really games that use more than 4/8 today. But why would there be? More than 4/8 has been out of reach for pretty much the vast majority of gamers. What do you think will happen when that level of performance is no longer out of reach?

I am irrationally excited and may pre-order from Micro Center today. Would really like some details on XFR, as I am torn between 1700 or 1700X right now...

There are examples today (Battlefield 1, Watchdogs 2, etc.) that already perform better with more cores. Even if I get slightly less performance now in some games from OC RyZen versus an OC 7700K it is completely worth it for me to upgrade for the multi-threaded app benefits. Gaming is a minority use of my system. Literally twice the cores and threads is more than enough to overcome any Fmax differences.

On the other hand, the pricing shows how much Intel has been laughing all the way to the bank with their quad cores. Intel made enough money off of me (2500K, 3570K, 6700K) that I'm a bit sour about it. Side note: if I had bought an i7 with 4C/8T to begin with instead of i5, I could have skipped upgrades until now.

Korean marketing material released by Videocardz roughly says that it is a cooling-dependent automatic overclock beyond the normal boost. Linus from LinusTechTips seems to think it's basically a 100MHz bump over the listed precision boost clock (e.g. 4.1GHz XFR for 1800X versus the 4.0GHz Precision Boost clock). So it's not a big deal as far as I can tell... unless water cooling or exotic cooling makes it go beyond that 100MHz bump.

I would like add to this that the difference in fps in modern games between broadwell-e and the 6700k is completely negligible.

Zen is a no brainer.

I think 1700x is the better option. If only because the 1700x will probably be the better binned CPU.

Very exciting times. I haven't felt this excited about CPU's in years. Finally I think (hope) we have some serious competition. IMO Intel may release a 6 core mainstream CPU to counter AMD. Let's hope so. We've been stuck on mainstream 4 core cpus for nearly a decade

It is for sure a higher binned CPU, there is no other logic for the price difference.

Looks like it will be better for streamers (and aspiring streamers) versus the 7700K:

https://youtu.be/3rUndzpdo1I?t=450

That is an excellent example of more than 4 cores being useful for even an 'average' user. I know my i5 2500k (lol I know.) can't really handle streaming SC2 at 1080p very well, and obviously a 7700k would be much better - but streaming is a core heavy task. Seeing it perform better on a Ryzen would definitely be a plus for me.
