I'm not doing so good with my 0302 1700+Bbred. I'd like advice on 2 things. A) My Rig below and B) an idea for a cheap hot rod for a broke friend.

A) The "old Rig"
Enermax wisper 430W
week 2 Bbred 1700 with Alpha PAL-8045 with Panaflo A1H (40 CFM 32dbA jobbie) blowing.
Abit KG7 (not lite, not raid)
Kingston HyperX PC3500 256MB (ala newegg "hot" deal a couple a weeks ago - misread that price-drop
NO PCI cards (using USB cable modem until I can find my sweet spot, then I'll use a cheap belkin NIC)
Hercules Radeon 8500 128MB
Lite-on CDRW
40GB IBM 65GBX? not the broken 75gbx (might have the numbers wrong, but I researched this a while back) I'm too lazy to throw in the 80GB 8mb cache fluid barring Maxtor I just got.
60GB Maxtor plane jane drive.

Thats it. I swapped my crucial RAM thinking that is what was holding me back. Oddly I can't even run at default FSB and 13 multi (1766?mhz). 12.5 multi is not Prime 95 stable, tho everything else seems to run fine. I've been running it at default clock 'cause I honestly don't need the extra horsepower outside of games, which i never have time for anyway... So, I'm thinking crappy chip right, RAM can't be the problem. But I have NOT done a BIOS update since board was purchased almost a year ago. I notice that a newer BIOS alowed for 2100+ a while back which just happens to coincide with the same muli as where my chip craps out. Sooo BIOS update right? Well I haven't tried this as my last BIOS update killed the board I was working with (sometimes it happens I know but now I'm paranoid) - whaddya think? I'm getting a new board in the next few weeks (prolly rev 2 NF7-s or 8kha, unless KT-400a turns out to be much better) so I'm kinda inclined to wait and not screw myself.

B) Cheap Rig
My idea for a cheap rig for a broke friend is to use Biostar m7vig pro board, with a volcanoe 9 ($18excaliburPC), $50 Kingston HyperX PC3000 and the $50 newegg Bbred 1700. I just built a cheap rig around this board and I liked it a lot. It has a 1/5 divider for an easy 166 FSB (I HOPE). Sooo I'm thinking I give the guy an old crappy case, my spare 300W Lite-On PSU, an old IBM 40 GB HDD (swapped from my rig) and the above. I hope to unlock the CPU and run at 166 x13 or 12. This would give about 2GHz and decent FSB with no stress on the system (Assuming 1/5 divider is real) for under $200. The PSU is rated 250W combined on +5v and +3.3v rails which I think indicates its up to the challenge... I just want to know if this is a fantasy or is this actually reasonable.

Soo my questions are will the CPU that I get now (week 5 or later???) be up to this???

Will This board be up to this? Just 'cause the BIOS thinks there is a 1/5 divider doesn't make it so (It gives FSB speeds with corresponding PCI speed and at 166 it drops back to 33)

TIA

Please keep posting results with CPU stats and specifics (stepping week, etc.) it'd be nice to have a bigger sample size (I know other web-sites do this...)

Update on my:
AXDA1700DUT3C
JIUHB0302xxxxx
see rig stats in my post above.

I was bored and ensomniac so I tried to OC again the other day. This time I set all my mem timings to the slowest possible. Shame on me for assuming my low latencey HyperX didin't need to be changed from the normal aggressive timings. I don't know if its the timings, I need more testing, or if the OC fairy sprinkled dust on my PC in the month since I first tried but.

running 12.5 x 160FSB = 320DDR/2001 MHz. Prime 95 ok for 3 hours, good temps and +1200 3DmarkSE for 9132. No sign of stability issues. I couldn't pass 145 FSB before. Still at default voltages. I was lazy and didn't unlock the upper multies, but now perhaps I should. I'm gonna dig up that thread on Burn(break)-in, I used to think it was crap, but...ok I know its crap. My AS2 probably just settled.

:Q

Well it looks like 12.5x163 is as far as I'm going. It is 12 hours Prime95 stable and several hours 3Dmark stable. I'm gonna play with memory timings to see what is memtest stable. Won't boot to windows on 164, 165 or 166. even after pumping up voltage to 1.8 vcore and 3.0 vDIMM. I could go higher, but why? I'm never gonna run OC anyway, just want to see what I can get... Tho if for some reason I have to take off the HSF, I'm gonna cut for higher multies.

40% overclock and 2400+ speed for $50 ain't bad. And this is on an old AMD761 chipset kg7. nForce2 guys getting 2.3 Ghz (3200+?) or better for $50? This has to be one of the best ever values. Tho when the barton's come down in price, the 2500+ will probably be a good one too...

***edited*** for too many errors to count.

Been having alot of bad luck o/c all my life (except my 300a@450, that was a breeze though). I hope someone can help me with this latest setup:

Stepping:

Speed:

2.5-2-2-5

Cooler
Vantec Aeroflow TMD

Motherboard
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

I cannot get any higher. I can get it to boot at 166 by raising voltage and memory voltage but I keep getting crashes or windows will just freeze. My temps right now are 42C and about 47 at load. So far it's pretty stable at 160 but I didn't spend $170 on PC3200 ram for it to oc 27 Mhz. ANYONE have any ideas?

sygyzy, you could relax your ram timmings to get a higher FSB, at least you could find the limmit of the CPU. Also you made a mistake on the product string of the CPU.

Which part of the timings should I relax? Give me an example and how high I should try to go with FSB. Also, what was the mistake?

Saw the mistake. Fixed it, thanks.

I have to run at 2.5-3-3-7 (well, perhaps I could go for 2.0-3-3-6 or something). I have the CTL samsung PCB, but also the 0338D stepping (D, which stands for 'dud' I'm sure). This chip is stable at >210 Mhz 2.5-3-3-7 but crashes at even 166 MHz 2-2-2-5! Cas 2 across the board is a no-go, no matter what the speed!

Prime95 failed within first 5 tests (changing configs every test), but i had not given up hope, and continued to tweakeepoo.
Currently I have a setup about the same speed, but running more stable it seems. 3604 on 3dmark03, and happiness on Sandra (PR3205).
The scores on the above setup were 2592 on 3dmark03, and PR3180 on Sandra. Not much on Sandra, big change on 3dMark03, and prime 95 has been running for 10 minutes (on test 1200+ as opposed to failing within first 5) and has only upped the core 4 degrees to 42, and the mobo temp has not changed from 25 degrees (celcius of course). I didn't mention it before, but I am using a Vantec Aeroflow running dumb @ 5000 rpm, whisper quiet, in an X-Spider case from xpcases.

Where's what I have changed:

Decreased my FSB a bit for stability, and upped the multiplier. When I kept the fsb higher than 175 or around 175, im pretty sure the mem was pissed off.
170 x 13 = 2.21ghz @ 1.8v

Tightened my ram settings (Keep in mind I am using 2 sticks of $53 Mwave 512 PC2700 Cas 2.5)
6-2-2-2 @ 2.7v - I had 5-2-2-2, but it got pissed off again.

And my AGP voltage is set to 1.7v on an AGP 8x bus.

It's lookin good. So good, I am debating on whether or not to push it more. Curiosity usually gets the best of us, but only time will tell.
And thanks to all of AT, without y'all, I would probably never have considered moving off my 1.7ghz s423 P4 512mb Rambus GF2 mmx400 ECS/PoS mobo system.
The community has provided the best prices, and best sources of oc/tech info. Thanks again!

Building a PC for a friend. Man I bought this cpu a month after mine, and I got an older Tbrd-A!!! Hosed! Oh well, at least I'll be able to "compaire" an A and B t-bred side by side in the same system... My buddy still can't complain, he's going from a 233MHz pentium, to an Athlon of at least 2000+ (1.8GHZ or so) with a modest OC with HyperX PC3000 ram in a Biostar M7VIG Pro - for less than $200.

I'll edit my results here in a couple days or so (I'm sure everyone is holding their breath

I've just this ram a few days ago, and I've not the time to go any higher than 166fsb since my previous Samsung pc2700 couldn't cut at any higher than 166. Maybe if I have time I can try upping the fsb higher, but since my motherboard only allows me to go as high as 1.75v (Don't know why, since my palomino can use 1.85v) I'm pretty much at the ceiling.

I think this epox board is lying to me...

Notes
At first I put this chip into my computer, my computer was crashing and rebooting all over the place even at default speeds. I found out i was the 512mb Crucial ram I recently put in. I stuck my trusty old Samsung back in and everything works great. I got it to post and go into windows xp at 2500mhz @1.9v, but prime95 would only do about 1.5 hours before it gave me a rounding error. I also don't know about these temps. Why are they so low? 33c idle and 39c full blast with prime95. The Epox MB is awesome. The samsung ram will not go higher than 166mhz even with relaxed timings, wierd?? Anyways, awesome chip, awesome wife !

yeah, you got a lucky 8rda+... you don't need to do the vdd mod to get 200 mhz...

still waiting for those smd grabbers to do my mod... hmm....

also, try running memtest86 c-2-3-1-2-0 spacebar

prime may be fine but memtest will find errors as well...

i recommend doing it because i was running 12 x 192 thinking it was stable... was playing warcraft 3 and in the middle of the game, my computer rebooted... so i had to back it down to 12.5 x 184...
