Sort of like the previous week when Ryan said you have at least two hours to vote and Phil held up two fingers. Then he seemed to realize he was really mistaken and held up six fingers. I wonder how many votes that cost him.

For the time being I have to believe on some level the producers like what Stern has done, bringing VFTW into the mainstream. I have to believe it's increased viewership (I know I was bored with the mediocre contestants this season and not watching). If he wins, though, that's a whole other kettle of fish.

The guy with the best raw singing talent amongst the male competitors is now gone. Chris has a nice instrument but he could use some/more vocal coaching. His rhythm probably contributed also to his undoing. Now we are left, as far as the male section is concerned, with one so-so singer with major pitch problems and the charisma of a turtle (Phil Stacey) and three poor boy-band wannabes who can't project their voices out of a paper bag.

Blake Lewis has no power in his girly voice, makes annoying moves and tries to use his stupid turntablist sounds as a gimmick to make us overlook this. Chris Richardson also has a very feeble sonority and his neck moves and overall look are too effete. Sanjaya can have surprising projection when he tries but that is his only plus. His androgynous looks do seem to score well with the preteen female crowd though.

Even the weakest singer on the female side, Haley Scarnato, is leaps and bounds above any of the remaining males. She too can project well at times and could have a nice career after some vocal coaching. Gina Glocksen is a little better but needs to channel her rocker emotions more and show a little anger in her voice. Jordin Sparks has a nice natural instrument but her voice still sounds a bit immature, not surprising considering her age but she's no young Charlotte Church or Céline Dion. Expect her to gain some vocal maturity and about thirty pounds of fleshy resonance during the next few years.

LaKisha Jones has excellent projection but lacks emotion and inflexion in her instrument. She could do well to try and exploit the lower part of her range better. I think she relies too much on her higher range.

Melinda Doolittle already has a mature instrument and stage presence, great effortless power, and her range is well under control although she too could display more variety in that last regard. She is by far the best at rendering the words and emotions in a song with her voice. She remains my favourite to win it all. Kudos to her vocal coach.

So let's get rid of the crappy males and their boy-bandishness as soon as possible so we can concentrate on what this really is, a singing contest, and enjoy the best singers in the last few weeks.

I don't know why so many people have a problem with Simon. I find his evaluation to be nearly always spot on and the contestants need to hear the truth if they want to remedy their weaknesses to further their singing career.

I watched it once and the auburn lady on the right (the mom?) is way prettier. Looks like the daddy's genes diluted the attractiveness of the offspring to a significant degree.
