so I completed the first assassination, and (I think) all of the secondary missions that were available at the time.

assassination involves having to do 2 of 6 investigation missions. each mission is one of 3 categories: sit on bench and listen to people, pickpocket, or follow a guy and rough him up. the extra missions involve saving citizens, which is picking a fight with local guards. after the minimum of 2 investigations, you go kill your target...not really any different than the other types of missions. I saved 12 citizens--each little mini-mission is the exact same: kill some guards...

on top of this, you have to find high points throughout the towns to update your map. you climb to the top, push a button, see a panorama of the area, map updated.

doesn't seem to be much variety outside of these goals. you can run around from town to town as much as you wish, it seems, but to advance the story and upgrade your abilities, it involves completing these tasks the same way...multiple times.

I can see where the criticism of repetition comes from....but it looks really nice while your doing these things over, and over...

I will say that running from rooftop to rooftop is pretty fun, and allows for some nice free-form parcour-like acrobatics.

No thanks. I did that at school

I think you actually have to press a button while you sit on the bench.

Its a cheap way to speed up the frame rate when you absolutely MUST have your game out by black friday and don't have the time nor inclination to polish or optimize it.

The concept seemed interesting from the start, but the fact that true gameplay footage was so rare during its development led me to believe that when the game did finally drop, it would be nothing but mediocre, and was riding on its graphics and the pretty face of its producer.

But I havent played it, so what do I know. Thats just my impression.

Well I got it and played for about 4 hours. Looking at things individually, the game would seem very repetitive. BUT I will honestly say that this is one of the funnest games I've played in a very long time. I would definitely give this game above a 9/10 so far.

I'm getting some nasty frame drop in some areas of Jeruzalem and it freezed once too. This game is just not finished. I'm glad I rented it (PS3 version). Its still great experience, since its nothing like it out there, but I can see this one is not a keeper for me anyway.

2 freezes for me so far

also forgot to mention that the disc comes with firmware 1.94, and installs automatically when you load it for the first time. I hope they distribute firmware this way more often (...although, I can see a danger in trying this with a rental that could be all scratched to hell, fucking up the install, and bricking your PS3--I rented Heavenly Sword and it locked up after the first 2 chapters--would not load at all past that....)

oh, and despite the repetitiveness of the missions and optional objectives, the stealth kills are fun as shit. jumping from roof to roof, whacking an unsuspecting guard from above. very satisfying

I haven't had any freezes or frame drop in the 360 version... maybe it's a PS3 thing?

This game is amazing. The combat works great and the animations of Altair climbing are flawless. Money very well spent and I'm about half way through it.

360 version - my thoughts.

Yes, I did get a few freezes (and since apparently there's a limited amount of space available for saving games, I got sent back to the beginning of the mission - not extremely frustrating in the slightest). Sometimes they were straight up freezes, but most of them were "graphics-overload," as in there were too many enemies on-screen to draw at the same time and the game spat out a "disc not clean error." Oddly enough, turning it right back on and playing it seemed to clean the disk. Thanks Microsoft.

As far as gameplay goes, it definitely kept me entertained. There are a few annoying things (the camera can be a massive PITA during fights), and sometimes the fight system doesn't work the way it's supposed to (but not often). Overall, the collecting aspect of the game wasn't too bad, and there's nothing quite like a stealth assassination - whether you're supposed to or not. It has a few other nitpicky flaws, but it was a fun game overall. Well-spent $60, considering how much playtime there was (No, I'm not exactly certain with the freezes and the fact that it's Thanksgiving Break and I haven't slept in two days).

Story-wise, while the twist was fairly lame (not going to spoil it), it did seem like they used as a crutch for level design. Instead of the wide-open sandbox I expected, there were arbitrary barriers set the various cities for no discernible reason whatsoever. Of course, the twist comes in very handy for skipping what would otherwise be exceptionally long travel sequences (I'm looking at you, Shadows of the Colossus). The only solid reason for the twist is it allows the sequels to have a different time sequence than this game, which should prove somewhat interesting.

Genre-defining? Hardly. But if you liked Prince of Persia, chances are you'll like this game. If not, see if I give a damn. I thought it was fun.

I got it on PS3 and like it so far. I have only gotten to Damascus, though. Just seeing the city from that cliff was pretty amazing, though. No freeze ups yet and I don't find it too repetitive, at least, it's not a lot different than any other game.

I like the story, it's something different.

I began playing the 360 version of the game yesterday. Since I'm still playing Mario Galaxy (beat the game, but still 40 stars to go to get all 120!), Crysis and The Witcher--I was a bit reluctant to dig in. I had read many posts from many forum goers concerning this game and I dont remember that last game that had opinions that were so divided.

Some people were adamant that this game was going to be, or was awful. Some people (and reviewers) were sure that this was the game of the year.

That being said, I didnt take much of the opinions to heart. I didnt read or see previews. I guess I went in to this game pretty open to the experience.

I've got to say that this game is pretty awesome so far. It looks amazing, I love period movies and games, I love playing as an assassin, and I love the controls (for the most part).

Yes yes, there are some bad elements to the game; for instance the voice acting is really not that well done with some of the supporting cast. Some of the guys sound russian when they're clearly not.

I've only played a few hours of the game, but I really do enjoy how open the game is. There are some repetitive elements but I dont know if that is a problem for me in the future. As it stands right now, its not.

This has gotta be the most divisive game in awhile. Half the people I know love it and half the people I know hate it. I pretty much fall into the later but I don't absolutely hate it because it does look beautiful.

Maybe if they release a demo I'll give that a shot... but I'm in no rush to run out and get AC.

My biggest gripe is the acting. The guy who does Altaïr's voice is terrible.

Yeah, I thought Altair was the worst. Most of the other 'major' NPCs and your targets are fairly well done though.

I agree.

I also think the AI in this game is terrible.

That said I've played it for probably 6 hours and only killed 2 of the 9 main guys, and I definitely plan on going through this whole game. I do wish the game had a little more variety though.

"Thank you so much, if only my sons were as brave as you."

I think I've heard that line like 10 times now.

Quick question for you guys.

*******BEGIN SPOILERS******

I finished up the first assassination and have moved over to Acre (I forgot the name of the city--so that's probably wrong), the second town, and am working on my second assassinations attempt.

Can I go back the first town at any time to finish off all the side quests? Also, if you get all the flags--do you get a bonus somewhere?

you should be able to go back and do them. I finish them all as I go, but the thugs that show up once you help out a citizen remain in their spots from the previous chapter.

I got all of the Masaya flags, but no notice of a bonus. still not sure what those do.

I'm enjoying stealth kills on the Templars

One thing I like is that you can pretty much run the main assassination missions however you want. I was able to sneak up next to the crazy doctor guy with a group of scholars and stealth kill him in one shot. for the second Acre target, I ended up fighting off hordes of guards...although it wasn't really necessary.

The animations for the various counter moves are pretty damn satisfying. short sword through the top of the head FTW! also snapped a guy's neck once...don't remember how that happened....

the game is fun but way to repetitive for me. it could have been better with more variety in the investigations and some actual strategy in the assassinations. if it could have been hitman+prince of persia, it would be like the best game ever. i think i'm going to return it and get uncharted instead.

Ok a couple more updates from my end

I'm fairly dissapointed you get nothing from completing quest except the satisfaction which isn't really that great. I just know that if I don't collect everything I will have the game beat real soon.

I also now get about 1 freeze per every other play of the game. And no it's not my hardware it's the game. Just weird things like the character getting stuck in corners and stuff like that. Luckily the game saves A LOT so that's not too big of a deal. I just lose motvation for play quickly when it freezes.

And I was noticing a lot of screen tearing, but I have since then been playing on an SDTV and I must say I enjoy playing this game at 480i. I notice barely any screen tearing now and the graphics now look more "blended" and fluid if that's possible. It all seemed so raw in HD.
