Mark - I've run three different memory modules in my Rev 1.04 ASUS Refurb. All were installed as single modules. All are 512MB.

Crucial DDR 2100 at 166fsb (no problems)
LEI (Legacy) budget stuff DDR 2700 at 166fsb and mild overclock to 177fsb (died at 180 fsb in 3DMark2100)
Crucial DDR 2700 at 195 fsb (works great), can't get 200 fsb but I'm still on all the default voltages for CPU and Memory

No memory heatsinks on any modules.

Hey Guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to network together two machines with the Asus A7N8X Deluxe board.

I tried putting the live line into one ethernet port and then a second line from the second ethernet port to the other machine I want to share with no luck.
The main machine is live on the internet with the live line but it does not see the second computer that I am trying to network. It is just a dead connection.

I basically want that second machine to atleast be able to network folders together, and if possible even share internet. But it is crucial that I get it to connect
Anyone have any experience with onboard networking???? This board has 2 ethernet inputs by the way.
Please help me out
Thanks
Frank S

You'll need a crossover cable when making a direct jack-to-jack connection between two PCs instead of having a hub/switch/router between them. So run to the nearest computer store and get yourself a crossover cable, for starters. If you need more help then you might want to post in the Networking forum once you've got your crossover cable.

Hey everyone, great thread so far. I have not seen anyone post about this directly, so here's the problem I'm having (not really a critical problem).

I have the a7n8x delux revision 1.04 (just got the latest bios for it) and 2x256 pc3500 kingston hyperX ram and a barton 2500+. Now this stuff should run at 216 fsb normally, and then overclock from there, but this is not really so. If I leave the ram setting as "by SPD" then the ram goes to 216 and the aggressive timings are something like 8-3-3-2. That runs fine, but the sandra scores are quite poor. If I run the ram in sync with the fsb, I can push to about 200 before it gives me stability problems in windows (and this is with very lax timings 9-3-3-2.5). It is not the cpu, because I have lowered and raised the multiplier in a variety of settings and had no issues with it. I have played with the ddr voltage, eventually settling on 2.7v and the vcore voltage as well, so those aren't the problem either. Can anyone give me some suggestions? How do you overclockers have your bios settings configured? Thx in advance.

I should also say that my temps have maxed at 44c, so I don't think heat is an issue.

do you have virtual memory disabled?ASUS probe wont work without it enabled no matter how much RAM you have(I know it sucks that it was made this way)

I have recently received a deluxe board. I have read and searched the forums but I can't seem to find an exact answer to my questions:

I have:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
PC3200 Buffalo/winbond bh-5 chips
R9700PRO
Thermalright Slk800 w/ YSTECH variable

What is the install order of software and drivers after WINXP's install? And which drivers should I use? Nvidia's 2.03 IDE DRIVERS or ASUS's?

Also, should I flash the board before I do install winxp or what? Any issues I should be aware of? Which bios? Are the IDE drivers or Serial ATA drivers even necessary since WINXP takes care of many of the drivers? If I have a Rev2 board, what is the recommended bios? I know Rev1's recommended bios is the 1002A.

It happened once before with one of my other media players (can't remember which one), but after I upgraded the version it didn't happen anymore. Any suggestions?

I normally use Winamp 2 because it's so lightweight, but I hate to have any sort of lingering problems (even with software that I can't stand).

1x512MB Corsair XMS PC2700

Thank you in advance.
Did anyone ever respond to this?

My real one player will crash my computer when I play video. I just got the board and installed it yesterday, so I haven't done any extensive tests. But I was able to play a game of WC3 with no problems.
I later got the video to work, when I switched my FSB from 166 to 100 Mhz, and also switched my sound output from 5.1 digital to headphones. Haha... random, but it worked. But i don't want to have to do this all the time!

I've searched the 8 pages, and couldn't find anything.

Win XP SP 1
DX 9
Athlon XP 2600+
1x512mb Crucial PC3200
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
5.1 digital audio output

The recommended routine is

  • Install Windows
  • Install service packs (gonna need them on CD, post back if you need a how-to-get-the-durn-things)
  • Take a sandwich break and admire your new rig while it defragments the hard drive
  • Install the mobo driver pack (for this board, I would use the Asus 1.16's)
  • Install DirectX at Windows Update
  • Install your video-card drivers
  • Patch your browser at Windows Update
  • Bust open a bag of Doritos and munch on them while installing your favorite games and running another defrag afterwards. I find that I get best performance with Cool Ranch flavor. Cool Ranch 0wnz!
Good luck with your new rig!

Did you lock AGP at 66MHz? If not, give that a try. Welcome to the Forums, good luck with your new machine!

Yeah, which service packs please. And please URL link them for me.

Also, during installation should I mess with bios? I heard that I have to disable integrated peripherals until after i install IDE drivers otherwise winxp installs crappy drivers for them -- automatically...
Also which bios is BEST recommended for rev 2.0?

Oh thanks lots for the install order and thanks in advance for whatever you say -- I like Ranch too!

Ok, what you need to download and have on CD is Windows XP Service Pack 1 (edit: having the Asus 1.16 driver pack on CD would be a good idea too), and here's how to get it:

  • Go to Windows Update
  • At the left, click Personalize Windows Update
  • Put a checkmark in the box that says to display the link to the Windows Update Catalog, and then click the Save Settings button at the right
  • Now click Windows Update Catalog at the left, select WindowsXP RTM from the dropdown list, and click Advanced search options.
  • Some options appear there. Put Windows XP Service Pack 1 into the search box and hit Search, and it will say "Your search returned 1 items." Click the Critical Updates and Service Packs (1) link below that.
  • Now click the Add button by WinXP SP1, then click Go to download basket, put a location for the file to be dowloaded to, such as C:\, and click Download now
  • Enjoy some Doritos while it downloads, then burn it to CD

You shouldn't need to disable any devices, as far as I know. Just don't try to install the mobo driver pack until after you've got WinXP up to the SP1 level. When you do run the mobo driver installation, if it asks you whether you want the SW IDE Driver installed, I'd say "no" to that... the SW IDE driver makes your hard drives go faster, but has some undesirable side effects with optical burners or audio extraction, and may cause PCI hard-drive controllers to have bad performance too.

As for the BIOS, my board came with the 1003 BIOS (I have the rev. 2 like you do) and it worked fine for me. I may update to the 1004 next week but it's not too big of a concern. Hope that helps!

Anyone brave enough to try the new BIOS for the Deluxe? I just noticed it under Beta today. The version number is: C1005.001. I just moved to 1004, myself, so I want to see if my random reboots are cured <knock on wood>, but I'd love to know what's in the new one.

I can help with that, Jim123, go in the back door and get them from Asus' FTP site here and the file is nf2v116_wxp.zip.

A general tip for everyone having trouble with Asus' stupid, lame downloads-that-you-can't-download: go as far as you can in their download page until you reach a download page that lists Global, USA, Europe and China options. Now right-click the "Global" link, choose Properties, and highlight & copy the link's URL, which will begin with ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ etcetera. Paste it into your browser address bar, then delete the file name off the end of the URL, and click "Go."

Hi, just one more thing, I'm about to start, and this is my plan

disable: APIC, the raid thing with the jumper, and the fireware thing

Install in this order:

Winxp (clean)
have to install modem drivers to
install SP1 on line
Nforce2 drivers 1.16
DX9a
Vid Drivers

Than install all other drivers
Than install software

Defraging as I go.

Is this OK?

Thanks
Jim

Yeah, except I would leave APIC enabled unless you have a reason to want it disabled, and I didn't disable my Firewire controller, just my SATA. I guess you could start with FW disabled and then enable it later if you want, though.
