I'm running a rev. 1.04 @ 400FSB here. No problems at all.

I also just got another Refurb A7N8X Deluxe rev. 2.0 from newegg. I've had it running a couple of hours now with a XP2400 @ XP2700. So far so good. Time to crank it up.

To install Linux (Mandrake 9.1 in my case) you have to disable the SATA controller.

I hve the connection in but can't seem to find where in the BIOS I need to tell it to boot from the SATA slot as oppoed to Floppy, HDD, CDROM, etc. There is a LS120 is that it?

So, when I turn on computer, set BIOS to boot from CD, WINXP in drive, it boots up and Windows tells me it can't detect a harddrive and therefore can't install..... What am I missing here? I have checked to make sure the jumper is enabled on the mobo.

Set it to boot from "SCSI".

Also, you need a floppy with the SATA drivers so Windows can see the drive. Press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID controller and then you should be fine.

Yep, anything newer than 1.0.0.32 lock up the system on reboot when it gets to the winXP load screen. The green bar goes back and forth slowly a couple times, pauses and then speeds up and three passes later it just locks. Oh well, I am going to get another Raptor anyway so I will need the raid drivers installed anyway.

Hi, first-time poster here. First I'd like to say thanks to everyone who contributes here; I've learnt a lot. However, I've read thru the entire thread, and amn't sure about a couple things...

My system:

A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 1.04, BIOS Rev 1006
AMD 2700+ 2.167 GHz (333FSB)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
2 x 512 CORSAIR CMX-512-3500C2
WD2000JB HD
Win2000 pro

Question #1:

What memory settings should I run? I went with 166 for both CPU and RAM in order to obtain the dual mode, but I'm not sure if this is working. How can I tell? When I put memory on Auto in the bios, I can't tell what FSB it ends up with. Put to aggressive, it sets to the aforementioned 166mhz, and put to SPD, it sets to 200mhz, but someone told me CPU/RAM FSB should be 333mhz both for optimal use. Or would 333 for CPU and 400 for the RAM be better? Is there much risk in trying?

I can live with the current setup, but I do press my comp pretty hard in an application or two (not to mention games), and, well, extra juice is always welcome . The reason I'm asking is mainly that a friend has a similar setup, but with pc2700 instead, and is scoring about 450-500 higher than me in 3dmark2003 (I'm at 4450).

Question #2:
I can't get the 200GB drive to show anymore than 128gb. I was hoping the onboard controller could handle it, but apparently not. I've tried looking about on WD's site, but can't find a useful answer. Perhaps someone with a similar setup has a solution? Or am I forced to buy a controller card?

Thanks muchly for any advice.

I would set everything to "user defined" in bios. Put the FSB at 200, mutiplier at 11 and memory at Cas 2-3-3-6.

On the A7N8X the mem timing order is reversed, so put it in 6-3-3-2, but I'd say with that RAM shoot for 5-3-3-2.

Thanks guys.

With the CPU at 333 and memory at 400, I'm running 6-3-3-2 without problems.

However, I've heard and read several places that for best performance, CPU and memory FSB should be identical at 333. I think I'll go for that, and try 5-3-3-2.

Question is, where can I check whether the memory is running in dual mode or not?

Bonus Question

Should I be messing with the memory voltage? What exactly does this effect?

Thanks in advance.

When you boot up, the line right after the memory check should tell you you're running in Dual Channel. If not, it's probably that you have the memory in the wrong slots.

Use slots 1 and 3, or slots 2 and 3 (I used 2 and 3, both are blue) to take advantage of Dual Channel.

Now for my questions. System put together is:

A7X8X Deluxe
AMD 2500+ XP
1 GB Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PT DDR400 XMS3200 Dual-Channel Memory w/Platinum Heat Spreader
40GB WD HD (will be changed to a 120GB Serial WD on Weds when it gets here)
MSI ti4600 4x AGP video card
Linksys DSL Router BEFSR41 with a 2nd computer networked
Win XP

In Device Manager under Network Adapters, there is listed:
1394 Net Adapter
3Com 3C920B-EMB Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller
Nvidia nForce MCP Networking Adapter

I have to have the 3rd one, Nvidia nForce MCP Networkinig Adapter, disabled. If it's enabled, Win XP keeps annoying me with messages about a cable unplugged from the network. If I delete it, Win XP keeps finding it and installing it anyway.

The system and net connections are working fine with it disabled. But there must be a neater way to handle it then having Device Manager show an X on an item? Is there a setting in Win XP to disable the unplugged cable message or am I set up incorrectly? The RJ45 jack is in the topmost connector, bottom one is free.

I have the BIOS set to auto detect the processor, but I think I could get better performance. What are the recommended settings if I use the User defined settings?

Thanks - had the splash screen activated at startup, and wasn't seeing it *blush*

Pardon the somehwat repetitive questions, but it's not always easy when one's a total n00b

A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 1.04, BIOS Rev 1006
AMD 2700+ 2.167 GHz (333FSB)
2 x 512 CORSAIR CMX-512-3500C2

When the RAM frequency is set to Auto, I get 166Mhz resulting.
When the RAM frequency is set to By SPD, I get 200Mhz resulting. (Running fine at 6-3-3-2)
When the RAM frequency is set to 200Mhz, I get 334Mhz resulting.

I'm not sure if these Mhz are before or after the "Double"DR, ie. if 166Mhz equals a 333 FSB, or it's the final FSB. At the startup screen, it displays it as final (166Mhz for Auto), so I'm guessing I should go for the 200Mhz freq., with 334Mhz resulting?

Back when I got the system, in march or so, I remember trying 200Mhz and then having to pop the motherboard battery in order to reset it. This could have due to the old BIOS being incompatible with the pc3500 RAM, though. I wasn't able to update the BIOS didn't back, but managed to just recently, fortunately.

Thanks again for the help, it's very much appreciated.

Ok Im having the crackling audio issue want to fix it since im using my 5.1 live and hate the drivers for it. Here is the most common res to the problem is something to do with acpi? However I do not have Xp I currently run 2000 Corprate Edition Server and am wondering how in gods name I can fix this annoying issue.

BTW Im sure the answer to my question lies somewhere in the last 30+ pages but after using the search feature and glancing thru about 10 pages of post did not find a "final" fix for this. Should I just keep using my live?

EDIT***

Found this Thread on page 13 one word "DIDO"
I also get the sound crackling problem. The noise is there all the time. Even with no audio playing, just after booting up my machine I can put on my headphones and hear static, crackling and even occaisional faint beeping. Most kinds of music covers over the noise, except for classical or in between songs. During movies its a hassle during quiet parts.
I have made sure the sound codec and soundstorm both have their own IRQ. I have updated my cpu driver to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC and disabled APCI in Bios. I tried the Realtek sound driver. I have tried every nforce driver that has been released. I have muted everything in nforce control panel except audio out and turned down the output levels. Nothing has fixed this problem. I have searched at AMDMB and NforcersHQ forums and tried everything that I found there, which I have listed above.
The above fixes have worked for many people. There are some though, like me, who have had no luck.

I'll Never buy another asus again....... Doubt I can get this fixed ...sigh!

Does anyone happen to have the same config as below that I could get screen shots of the CMOS settings from them. I have a Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0, 512mg DDR 2700 ram, Athlon XP 3000 CPU. I am interesting in overclocking this system if possible. I've looked through the other messages in the forums

Thanks in advance!

Well I missed out on the Aopen mb deal, this mb is a little more expensive, but it has better ratings. SATA RAID is the only RAID controller, right, it doesn't do IDE RAID?

I ran into a very odd problem while flashing my friends BIOS on his A7N8X Deluxe.

I booted his computer, used ALT-F2 during the post to flash the BIOS, and had the program flash his BIOS. I am sure I downloaded the proper flash image for his BIOS (rev 2.0 and deluxe version). Anyways, the BIOS was in the process of flashing and I'm not sure if it flashed the BIOS 100% because all the sudden it rebooted on its own while I wasn't looking. I assumed it rebooted because it finished flashing. I'm not so sure thats the case because I can no longer get the computer to post. The fans and drives turn on but I get no video whatsoever. All I get is a "System failed memory test" from the speaker. I tried 3 different sticks of memory and it won't accept any of them (and I know they all work). I also cleared the CMOS via the jumper and also by taking out the battery. I even unplugged the computer, left the battery out, and had the jumper set to clear the CMOS overnight. This did nothing.

So now I have this machine that just won't boot up. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I am having a weird problem. I just put in a SATA Hard Drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Home. When I try to install nvidia's Geforce drivers, they install and tell me I need to reboot. before computer shuts down I get a End Program window for a program titled "should not see me" and reboots immediately instead of doing the timed end task reboot, where it doesn't reboot for about 10 seconds but you can click to reboot now. Then when it reboots the nvidia's drivers are not installed... in fact.. when I looked under Device Manager, my video controller isn't even installed! and also not installed is video controller (VGA Compatible). I am thinking that because the basic VGA drivers aren't installed that the nvidia's aren't.... anyone have an idea of what to do on installing the basic VGA drivers?

After I install WinXP Pro, what next??? Do I need to install the SP1 then the Nforce2 drivers???

Thanks all.
