I'd say its a RAM or driver issue. I'd also pull the SBLive!, as its now dated and unsupported by Creative with a long history of problems. Plus, the onboard sound is better than the Live! anyways. Make sure you have the latest drivers for all of your components, particularly your video card. Also disable any options in the BIOS under integrated peripherals that you are not using.

Onboard it better than SB Live....what about the SB Live Audigy....
I run 3 different versions (3 seperate computers) of the "live" but what I like is the "live drive" on the front of the computer.

I'm not that particular about my sound just as long as there are no funny noises or hissing going on I'm happy.

am getting random BSODs and my comp has rebooted by itself a few times ever since I got this board bout 4 days ago. Here are my specs if anyone can help

I'd say check to make sure the temps aren't running too high. It might not be burning out immediately, but if after a while things get funky than thats certainly an issue. Make sure you have some good airflow going on, cause an add-in card that is everheated can definitely crate some problems.

How do you know what revision your mobo is? I wanted to update my BIOS, but then I saw that there are a bunch beyond the 1002A now... but they're limited to your version...

I saw a bunch of numbers at the boot, but i'm not sure which one to listen to... is there an easier way to find out? (i know, i'm a noob)

Its on your motherboard, inbetween PCI slots 2 and 3. Its to the right of the silkscreened "A7N8X". My rev. 1.4 had tiny silkscreened revision numbers to the lower right, but my 2.0 is emblazoned much larger to the upper right.

I believe you can also tell your northbridge revision/stepping by going into WCPUID's chipset properties. You can get WCPUID in the first stickied link in the CPU forum. I need to double-check my Rev 1.4 when I get it back up and running, but my Rev. 2 is consistent and says "C1" for NB and SB stepping.

Because... after I installed everything, my computer starts up (i.e. the fans start going...) but then shuts down after 5 or 8 seconds...

After I pulled off the HSF and Processor... when I try to boot... the fans turn on and stuff but stay on, as opposed to when the processor is in...

Either way, there's no video feed at all, nor does it "beep."

Anybody have an idea what might be wrong?

It's probably your heatsink. I found that i actually had to clip down my heatsink to stop it shutting down after a few seconds.
Did anyone get a "Decompressing Bios" sort of message on their first entry to the bios? I got that, it looked like it hung, i let it go for 3 minutes (without change) then i reset. Bad move?
After doing that, when i boot i get a black screen, fans, lights, hdds, cd drives power up and nothing happens. i've attempted to clear the cmos but that didn't help. Any ideas? Should I RMA the board?

Additionally, i had a few problems with my stick of Kingmax ddr ram. the board doesn't seem to like it at all. Has anyone else gotten kingmax ram to work with the board?

On the asus website for this mobo it now says that 400fsb is supported from pcb's with version 2.0 on.

I have family members with both audigy and audigy 2 soundcards. They both sound superior to the Nforce onboard sound on my Asus as7n8x, but not by a great margin. I think the Nforce onboard sound is more than adequate for most users. It's definitely superior to Creative Live. :brokenheart::camera::clock::music:

I can't seem to get my temp programs to work, neither the Asus Probe, or anything else...

Did I forget to install something? or did I install anything wrong?

Oh, some information that might be important...

Temps DO show in the BIOS menu... When I installed Asus Probe, I get an error "Can't Find LmControl Procedure"

Is Asus probe showing the fans spinning? My first inkling is that maybe the diode burnt out, but I believe that the system wouldn't POST if that was true. Hmm... lemme think some more and look some stuff up... this is interesting.

I don't normally post here, but I was checking the anand main page and saw this link.

I thought I'd contribute some. I looked through the thread and saw no mention of how to voltage mod the board. If you're interested in that, I've put up a guide on my site, Maximum OC. I ordered this board way back when it first popped up on newegg and 2 days later, DDTUNG and I figured out the voltage mod for it on the Xtreme Systems Forums.

I've been using the same board since I ordered it. It is the first version of the board, and it hasn't failed me yet! I love it! I'll be peaking @ 250mhz as soon as I can chill my ram down some more with some ram waterblocks. I can hit 240mhz right now

NOTE: Guide link may be down temporarily as I am switching hosts.

I´ve been searching around on this forum and read alot but i´m still confused, the thing is I have a Athlon XP 2600+ (333 MHz FSB) but it only runs at 2000+ and not 2600+, the bios I have is 1001.G, I checked this at asus homepage bios and the cpu support, for a 2600+ they refer to bios 1001.C but they ad that if the motherboard BIOS version number is greater than the BIOS version listed at the homepage, then one will not need to flash the BIOS. They reffer to 1001.C and I have 1001.G but I dont get the full capacity out of my processor...... my memory is running at 200mhz, ok all info is very welcome!

At the risk of sounding stupid, i've decided to post a reply.

I noticed that when I change the speeds in my bios, it recognizes my CPU as a different processor (i.e. a slower speed makes my 2100+ a 1700+, vs a faster speed that makes it a 2700+) So just make sure all the settings in your bios are correct...

I think my settings are correct, are u thinking of something special? When it comes to CPU speed, the mobo should detect the speed automatically so I think that the BIOS is to blame here?! If so which bios should i flash? Maybe the 1003 version??? I havent flashed before and when one hears the "horror" storys of flash accidents one doesnt hurry to experiment with the bios.....

You're correct that your problems are tied to the BIOS. The 1001.G BIOS was the shipping BIOS @ the time I bought my first A7N8X, and is probably the worst BIOS released for this board. Go to Asus' site and download BIOS 1002.A or 1003 (make sure you get the 1003 version that matches your board revision) and flash your BIOS. You can do this by using the AWDFlash utility or by using AsusUpdate. I've found AsusUpdate to be quite simple, and is my preferred method. I've left instructions in this thread somewhere on how to flash using AsusUpdate.

The problem is that your FSB is running at only 133MHz (266MHz DDR). The 1001.G BIOS is not properly recognizing your CPU and therefore, isn't properly adjusting your FSB to 166MHz. 166MHz x 12.5=2083MHz (2600+ speeds), so 133MHz x 12.5=1663MHz, which is about right for an XP2000+. Once you've flashed to a newer BIOS, it should recognize your CPU's settings properly. If not, go into the BIOS options and manually adjust the settings to 166MHz FSB, set memory frequency to "sync" or 100% (assuming you have PC2700 RAM), and then save and save and exit. Once you reboot you should be running at 166MHz. If it doesn't, we can try some other things.

Chiz

Edit: The reason for upgrading your BIOS before making changes is because the 1001.G does not like ANY changes to the BIOS regarding FSB and multipliers, so there is a good chance your board will lock (requiring a CMOS reset or cold boot) or will default to 100MHz. These issues were fixed beginning with 1001.E, but 1002.A and 1003 are the best available IMO.

Thanx for the detailed explanation! After my last post I downloadede the 1003 version, used the asusupdate (alt+F2) and flashed, it worked like a charm (hmm like a charm do u say that in the states? ) Now my CPU is at its proper speed 2600+, its nice when it works without friction! when it comes to my memory I have 512 Mb DDR-400 3200 Twinmos....hmm I have to chek it out in my bios, feel free to advise me!

Ok I checked out the memory frequancy and I couldnt find the "sync" and "100%" option, only Auto which resulted in 166Mhz and By SPD which resulted in 200 Mhz... any reflections? As I said before I have 512 Mb DDR-400 3200 Twinmos...

FYI
I have brought my OC way down to 166@12.5 and synch'd memory to same freq. with agressive settings. SHows up as a 2600+. Still get great performance with better temps around 48C. I'm gonna wait until I improve my cooling until I go any further; even though the Asus AN78X has a built in chip that will shut you down before you burn out cpu. When playing mohaa my temps got up to 56C according to Asus Probe recording it. I have the latest bios and a rev. 2 mobo and it seems that whenever I set it to clock multiply 12.5, I always get registered 2600+ for all freq. at 166 and above. Since the 2800+ and 3000+ has double the cache, the bios must recognize those cpu's by that. I have never seen registered any higher than 2600+ even though I was beating the 3000+ benchmarks.

The only real issue I've had except for that it was running so fast it was scary, is that occasionally I get the voice bios to tell me that I failed memory test but it boots and everything seems fine. If I reboot then I dont get the error twice in a row. I get this at my current above specs too.

Anyone else notice that in bios revision 1003 that it completely disables the use of 200mhz FSB? I select 200mhz FSB, it boots to windows...and wcupid identifies the bus at being 166mhz instead. I can run all the way up to 199 and be fine (and actually runs at 199). I can do 202 (runs 202) but it locks at the login screen. There is no 201. What gives? I guess I shouldnt complain, with 1002A it was only stable up to 190. Anyways. Just thought id check and see if this is a common problem or just me.

(Bump) i guess... *shrug* sorry if I'm not supposed to do this..

oh yeah, BTW. Does everyone else's computer talk at start-up? Mine uses like a female voice and says "Finished start-up self-test now booting from operating system" or something like that...

Hello All,
I just go my Asus A7N8X Deluxe. From what I understand it has digital
audio outs and some cool audio stuff. I am trying to figure out what
exactly it has. What I'm looking for is a front or rear device that
enable me to have pure digital audio, or maybe even interface my stereo
with the pc. Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Thanks in advance.
