Weird problem I've never run into; please help!

Admittedly I don't have my bios revision number, but it is the latest one as of a month or so ago.

I have a a7n8x non-deluxe model with a 2500 Barton, 512mb of 2700 memory, an ATI 8500 video card and everything's been working very well since January.

Last week, when gaming, I would hear my Asus Probe telling me of a problem, but I couldn't switch back to it in time to see. So recently I was surfing the web and it did it again, and I saw that the 3.3v line was dropping to about 2.8 or 2.9. Shortly after that, or around that time, the computer freezes. Sometimes I get a bunch of multi-colored lines across the screen, sometimes it just goes blank.

What could be causing this? I have a 400w Antec power supply.

Edit: I've loved this board for the last 6 or 7 months, but I'm at wits end as to what could be causing this.

Check the power from the outlet with a multimeter, or try a different outlet. Or better yet get a UPS battery backup (not the shipping company, an uninterruptible power supply) it's better than any surge protector and will save you in a blackout.

Okay, you're not going to believe this, but at least the solution was free and fairly easy. I swapped out my Barton 2500+ with an old Duron 800 to see if I had the same problems, and when I got done swapping it out, I couldn't power anything back up. After double checking everything, I found the power connector to the mobo was loose and not seated all the way. Clicked it back in nice and tight, and everything is just hunky dory!

Weird how it just started doing it though, but at least the fix was free! I feel like a real dumbass now for not even cracking open the case for almost a week of problems.

The only thing missing is adjustable VDD voltage, which is what allows most NF7-S rev. 2 boards to go to 220-230MHz FSB right out of the box. However, the rev. 2 A7N8X's are getting to at least 210MHz FSB and one guy here got his to 230MHz FSB with no mods.

I just got my rev2 today. Everything works except the sound, in Windows. When it boots *sometimes* I can hear it say "CPU Fan Fail" (the CPU fan is just fine, thank you) but when Windows starts, the sound doesn't work. I've tried all the Nvidia control panel settings, nothing works. Wierd. I don't have a sound card and I don't want one, so that's not really an option. Sounds like a software issue to me. Any thoughts?

Yes, I have the Barton 2500+ and it works great. As a matter of fact, I can very easily oc it to 2800+ by just using the multiplier and nothing else.

Do rev 2.0 boards have adjustable Vdimm right out of the box? I don't want to go modding a nice new board...

Man do Asus RMAs suck. I send them the board second day air and they send it back 5 day economy saver. ARRGH!!! I better get a Rev 2.0 out of it for my long wait.

hey Monkey
seems i had a somewhat better time of it than you: took it back to the store and initially they said it would have to be an Asus rma but then saw the state of the packaging and just agreed to swap it for me

mind you we have some OLD stock here in UK. my 1st rev2 board in April shipped with bios 1002 and this one has 1003; the box/manual still say 333FSB [do the new boxes saw 400FSB on them?]

anyway rebuilt it last night and it works fine. oddly the voltage rails seem better and my chip is running way cooler than it did with the old board [8C cooler!] with same hardware [not that i am complaining!]

suppose i better flash the bios up at some point [1003 doesnt even tell you if yo are in dual channel or not]

I'll have the board Monday, but it's just really annoying having to wait this long. When UPS lets the board sit around and do nothing for two days, you can see why I'm annoyed. Didn't they think that it was kinda urgent when they got the thing second day air?

yep happened with my rev 1.04 too. it could possibly be a power supply issue or the voltage regulators are crap.

The software monitoring is not necessarily accurate. You can test with a digital multimeter. I tested my NF7-S and found that software monitoring was way off.

There was two posts regarding compatibility of Boston Acoustics speakers w/ this board, more specifically, the speakers do not receive anything from neither the digital nor analog outputs... With regular earphones it works just fine... Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? I don't want to buy new speakers

Someone had a prob with BA7500, I have the BA790's.

Thanks!

ok, i have a problem, i got my new comp running as follows:

a7n8x rev 2.0 bios 1005
2 x 512mb Corsair pc3200 xms @ 11,2,2,2
amd 3000
aero 7 cpu fan
radeon 9700 pro aiw
2 x 80 gig seagate barracudas
burner
dvd drive

anyways, i've tried a whole lot of settings, i've got my comp to boot into windows at 2.4Ghz, but it's not prime95 stable, didnt even last
1 minute, i'm running 200x11 right now, with a 1.750 vcore, and default vdimm, but i can't get prime95 to run for more than an hour or so,
what do i need to do to make this comp run stabily????????
