When you start raising vcore sometimes the cpu will not to be prime stable over 50C. Are you reading the temp in asus probe or MBM5? Although I don't have this mb anymore, I'm pretty sure that asus probe shows the socket temp. You can configure MBM5 to read from the diode. The diode is more accurate and tends to be 10-15C hotter than the socket reading.

Yes, I'm reading the temps from MBM5, so they should be quite accurate, but I'm surprised to learn that these CPUs don't like anything above 50C...

You will need a better heatsink if you want to overclock more. Also case ventilation makes a big difference because the heatsink is trying to cool a hot cpu with hot air inside the case.
Can you run prime95 without errors at stock speeds?

Well, currently my case is half-opened so I don't think air temp inside is a problem. The board stays around 25 C.

I didn't even try to run Prime95 at stock speed! That's a good think to try first, I'll do just that tonight.

Thanks. If anyone has more help, I'm all ears.

OK basically me & a m8 have this motherboard, as we brought it from the same place at the same time and are both experiencing a problem we can't seem to solve. The problem is that all my games run fine on my system except teh Farcry SP demo. My m8 gets exactly the same problem except he also gets it with Starwars Galaxies. In Farcry I get between 2-4 fps.

My system specs are :

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
XP2600+
1 gig crucial pc2100 ddr ram
Windows Xp pro
GF4 Ti4200

My m8's specs:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
XP3200+
1 gigKingston PC3200 ddr ram
Windows XP home
GF4 Ti4600

We have both tried everything imaginable, icluding updating the bios, nforce drivers, graphic drivers, direct X etc and have no completely given up hope of getting this board to run as it should

Edz

That can happen with new demos. Its probably not the board's fault since other games run well. Sometimes its not possible to get a demo to work.
Have you tried the Cat 4.2 driver?

Not much point trying Cat4.2 drivers when I have a GF4 :-/

Anyone know what bios version is best? Someone told me to get 1004 and I currently have 1007.

Anyone have any luck running 3 512mb dimms at 400mhz? on the A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2 Board? or 2 x 512 + 1x 1 Gig? and if so what brand of ram did you use? Any help would be appriciated, I'm considering trying to add some more memory to my current 2 x 512mb of Buffalo PC3200 for Photoshop and some Interactive SQL back end database testing.

i notice in my device manager that i have a "standard enhanced pci to usb host controller" as well as 2 "standard OpenHCD usb host controller"s
the former has 6 ports - usb 2.0
the latter have 3 ports each usb 1.1

all i knew was that my board supported 6 usb 2 ports
in the back of my pc i have 4 usb ports [ie slots to plug into] which contain 1 usb2 scanner [recognised on the enhanced controller], a printer and a dsl modem [both recognised on the openhcd controller] as well as 2 ports in the front.

what does all the different type of controllers mean and what do i need to do to make all 6 "slots" usb2.0 given that the m/b is supposed to support this?
i aske bacause the scanner [usb 2] only works when plugged into 1 of the slots and is not recognised when plugged into the others.

i'm sorry it is a slightly wierd question but i am confused by this arrangement in device manager

i think you might struggle
i had problems with my ram running at 200mhz and it was in slots 1/3 [it works fine at 166mhz]; when i switched to slots 2/3 it works fine so it seems that all 3 wont work together at 200mhz.

in reply to another question i posted in the o/c section someone told me it is to do with limitations of the memory controller

if it helps...

infact it seems that my 2 front ports work as usb 1.1 -
1 is mapped to the same root hub as the hub that "controls" the modem and printer on 2 of the back ports
the other front port maps to the 2nd 1.1 root hub
of the 4 back slots 2 map to the hub as above and the scanner/usb2.0 slot maps to the usb2.0hub [with 5 empty "ports"]
the 4th slot, when i put anything in it comes up as "unknown usb device"

My (now) spare A7N8X Deluxe (Rev 1.04) won't boot at all. I've tried clearing the CMOS, removing the battery, and unplugging everything from the board (including BIOS chip and battery) and with no luck. The last time something like this happened, removing the BIOS chip and battery overnight fixed it, but not this time. All parts have been tested in my NF7-S as working. Does it sound like Asus RMA hell time?

Duron 1.6
512MB Buffalo PC3200
Visiontek GF4 Ti4600

Tried with no luck:
BFG FX5900
512MB HyperX PC4000
Barton 2500+

looks like you succumbed to flakey bios....AGAIN!
just as well it is a spare board during the rma then!

by the way monkey, you able to shed any light on my usb question? i dont know what i have done wrong to not get all the slots working [1 in the back gives "unknown usb device" to anything plugged into it, and onl1 1 supports usb2

i assume your board worked before you stored it and dusted it off again for use again now right? maybe you caught some stray static in the storage time?

Nope, the board was working fine (even started crunching a few F@H WUs) except that it refused to boot off of the hard drive (bad cable). Swapped cables and this wonderful thing happened. I've also swapped BIOS chips (ordered a spare last time this happened) to no avail. Sorry, I don't know anything about your USB question, I don't have any USB 2.0 devices to test out.

Have you tried the board outside of the case with just the bare essentials (cpu, memory, video card)?

That's where it's been for the past week, on an antistatic bag.

So you've tried it without the hard drive and you can't get into the bios? Do the fans spin up or does nothing happen when you turn it on?

Yeah, I think you are right about an RMA, since you tried another bios chip. I did an RMA with Asus last Fall and it only took two weeks. Good luck.

I'll let it sit unplugged for a day or two and try firing it up again (which actually worked last time I almost RMAd this board), if it doesn't work I'll RMA it. I'm so happy I got my NF7-S to replace this thing.

I'm setting up raid 0 on this board for video editing purposes but I found 64 to be the largest stripe offered. Did I miss something?

Sounds like maybe. I RMA'd one of my rev 1.04 boards last week, I had a failed bios flash and after hot flashing it with my other board(same revision) it wouldn't boot properly and any attempt to change CPU or memory settings would corrupt the BIOS, requiring a reflash. I also couldn't flash the BIOS except with a copy of the existing BIOS, but the chip would flash fine in my other board. ASUS did give me an RMA number quickly, and they've had the board for a little over a week in Fresno so I should be hearing from them soon.

New battery, old battery, no battery, nothing worked. It was working before I swapped IDE cables, then wouldn't POST on the next startup.

This may have been asked before... but... which setting in the BIOS (1007 Uber) controls voltage to the chipset? I noticed with the 1007 Uber BIOS there's a new item listed called CHIP... is that it? If so... then what's VDDQ??

I thought it was CHIP, but I can't check that for a couple weeks. I've heard that the setting doesn't really increase the northbridge voltage at all, and it didn't seem to help my overclocking, so YMMV.

Anyone been able to get MBM5 to properly display temps with thier A7N8X-E? I was reading on the MBM forum that the temp sensor is screwed up and doesn't display the temps right. If so, is there a software that does? Thanks.
