If your memory is not in the A column, but is on the QVL, then you CAN'T run 1 stick - at all. It just won't work. If it is in B, you're in luck, because you can buy 2 sticks. If in C, buy 4 sticks (although thats a waste, so don't).

Thanks for anwering, but I recently got a reply from Asus support, which went as follows:
"Sir, You could install your single memory on the a8n-sli . But please install it in the DIMMB1 slot . Or it will lead to your system no power."

If I understand this correctly, this would mean either that
1. all cards that are in columns B and/or C, but not in A, also run in single mode if placed in slot B1, or
2. this particular module happans to function in single mode if placed in B1..

Still, I will try, and hope for the best.

But is there really a significant loss in running only single mode?

This is also stated in the manual under the RAM population rules. It's just the way it works in this board, regardless of what RAM you are using. If using one module, place it in B1, if using 2 identical modules, place them in A1 and B1.

Asus a8N-SLI (duh)
2x512 mb OCZ pc3700 el
2x XFX 6600GT's in SLI
2x 36gig raptors raided
180g WD slave

Im pretty sure that is everything thats relevant to the scenario.
1. OK. To start, on powerup this system sometimes does, nothing. I will have to restart by holding down the power button over and over again (sometimes reset works but rarely) and eventually the monitor will actually turn on and even then sometimes i get hung up right before windows is about to load I have no idea what is causing this problem or how to fix it any ideas are welcome

2. I am having problems shutting down. sometimes the system shuts down properly but when it does actually shut down it is agonizingly slow...when it doesnt shut down the little box saying windows is shutting down disappears and then my mouse pointer still works and i have nothing but that aqua screen and a mouse pointer again no idea

3. Video issues I was running all of my games absolutely fine for a day or two and then suddenly, without toying with the drivers or bios or ANYTHING i have artifacts all over every texture in every game again no idea

I have tried damn near every bios revision official and beta and these problems persist with the 1003.005 or w/e they are the startup issues appear to have gone away but the shut down problem will NOT go away same with the video it is really ugly and i have tried updating and rolling back the video drivers nothing works anyone that has any ideas with any of this please help me out this is so much money to spend to have it not work :/

1. What power supply are you using? I'm inclined to think this would either be a possible problem with the PSU or maybe with the front panel wiring to the mainboard. I would suggest double checking polarity of all your connections from the case switches to the mainboard as well as trying another power supply with the system if possible.

2. I had this same problem and in my case, the cause turned out to be the Drive Image 7 software. Once I uninstalled it, shutdowns became much faster and the intermittent hangs at shutdown went away completely. Disabling the PQI Protector service wasn't enough, I had to completely uninstall the software. If you happen to have this software installed as well by chance, or you have similar software installed, try uninstalling it.

3. Try uninstalling/reinstalling your video drivers. I had some quirks with my setup that went away after doing this.

Ok. This is my first post in this forum, and hello everybody, so forgive me if this is a silly question. I got my Asus A8n SLI board today, with one Crucial Ballistix 512MB 3200 module. I was planning to run my system with one of these, and adding another in the nearest future. I am perfectly aware that this board runs best in dual mode. However, I am having problems interpreting the memory compatibility list at Asus' home site. According to this list, my Crucial module does not satisfy the first requirement, "A", which reads: "Supports one module inserted in any slot as Single-channel memory configuration". Now, does this mean
1. That this board does not support only one of these Crucial modules, or
2. That this board supports one of these Crucial modules in only one of the slots?
In other words, do I need to buy another module in order to make the system run?

I haven't tried runnin just one stick of this memery, but I do know that 2 sticks run great. I will try to run 1 stick tonight and get back to you with my results. and by the way I would like to thank everyone for all the great information that is in this thread.

If it is not listed in the first one you check, go to the second one.
Make sure the "Enable command queing" box is unchecked.
Restart

I hope this helps.

Thanks I found it and it was already disabled. Looks like im stuck with 1002 until something more compatable comes along.

I've still not lost my maxtor with 1003.008 and 4 hours of aggressive overclocking/crashing/hanging/rebooting. I think the maxtor detection problem may well be fixed, I'm not willing to test for NCQ though, leave that off.

I really appreciate that, cronic. Great
Can i ask you if you have tried overclocking with these sticks? I was hoping to get some high results...

yes i have. i am runnin beta bios 1003.005 and have had good results. i set the memory to ddr400 and the timinngs are 2.5,2,3,5, and 1t. i have the ht set to 5x, 11 x 230. it is completley stable and very fast. i havne't tried the beta bios 1003.008 but probably will tonight to see if i can get more. i am not in front of that puter right now but i think the memory bandwidth with sandra is somewhere in the 6800 range with those settings. i did notice that the difference between 1t and 2t were around 1200 points in bandwidth, with the 1t producing the better results. at these settings the cpu idles at 29 degrees and 40 during benchmarks. i also overclocked the asus video 6800 ultra with very good results. i highly reccomend this card. it is a little pricey but overclocks very well. i have it running at 451mhz and 1200 on the memory and is 100% stable. the nice thing is on the stock cooler it idles at 44 degrees and never goes over 58 during benchmarks. i can't wait until i get my 2nd one. hope this helps a little and i will post more info tonight. thanks

Ah, looks very promising. Can't wait till I get my chip (and the rest of the system...). I am going for a 6600GT-setup myself. Albatron, I believe. Again, thanks, and looking foreward to hear about the single module.

The only problem I am experienceing with my SLI setup is that when I set any Widescreen resolution in HL2/CS:S the screen looses sync , like the refresh rate is wrong.

I have tried 1600x1050 and 1600x900 with all recent drivers 66.93, 67.03, 70.90, 71.20 and 71.24 using a Dell 2005FPW. If I set any 4:3 aspect ratio (1280x1024) it works fine. Also tried my Dell 20000FP at 4:3 1600x1200 with no problems.

Note: On my Shuttle SB75G2 using a BFG 6800GT OC with the Dell 2005FPW I can run 1600x1050 in HL2 / CS:S no problems with any recent driver.

I suspect this is a driver issue with SLI running Widescreen rsolutions in games and wanted to see if anyone else was having this problem?

I did have the fsb running at 400 but the NvMonitor showed the mem as "red" so i backed if off a bit.

OK! I hope I am not jumping into conclusions here. But w/ the 1008 bios I went from not being to overclock past 210FSB to 250FSB x 10 = 2500MHz, mem voltage is 2.75 IN bios is set to 4X HTT 400 MHz and rest on auto. CPU is at 1.65 V in bios although AiBooster shows 1.58, temps are 46 CPU 44 Mobo w/ water cooling while running Prime95. GOnna run it for a while then will try to up the FSB.

I see, cronic. That was unfortunate. Well, guess I have to buy one more then. Thank you very much for your help. I will return when I get the rest of my system.

also i should add that after messing with beta bios 1003.008 i had to reinstall os due to corrupt registry. 1003.005 works alot better ,in my opinion, with ram capable of lower latencys and 1003.008 will allow higher fsb with loser timings. however your results may be different than mine. let me know guys. thanks

I can't read the 48 pages of this thread, and people seem to have run out of ideas on my thread in the network board, so I'll ask here.

I'll make it very simple, because explaining things just causes problems as it is VERY confusing...Has anyone gotten their ethernet ports on their A8N-SLI Deluxe to work, work properly, and work reliably. I have gotten it to work a couple times, the most recent time I had it working through a router and could connect to both the internet and another computer. Came back after dinner, didn't change ANY settings, and the internet was no longer working, and shortly after the network with the other computer stopped working.

PLEASE give me some help with this, even if it is to say that I may have gotten a bad board.

PLEASE PLEASE, ok thank you,
Aipon

Try the Marvel Yukon port, and the Marvel Yukon drivers from the ASUS website (not the mobo CD)

Would a bad driver let it work sometimes, and then just fail randomly for seemingly no reason? I will try it, just have to hope my USB ports are working so I can transfer it via jumpdrive....

[EDIT]: I might as well ask this too: What's the best way to use the drivers from the website? Do I remove the old drivers first and then load these? Or do they come with some sort of install wizard that will do everything that needs to be done?
