You mean you moved the reset rtc jumper to 2-3 and waited at least 10 seconds (thats what the manual says) then put it back to 1-2. I don't know what other jumper u could be referring to as there are no other ones.

But as of resetting the CMOS for about 5 different times, some taking about 8 hours with no power and the battery out, I have had no luck getting this thing to go past turning fans with no speech or beep error codes. I think this is really a worst case scenario here and I'll going to have to put up with Asus's crappy customer support and RMA it.

I get the same message too, fent. I think it's because the rpm's on my panaflo 120 fan are too low to be recognized by motherboard. I have to press F1 to continue boot. It is plugged into the cpu fan header.

Fent,

I also get the vocal "CPU fan failure" message about every 5th boot. Have to pop F1 to proceed. I've taken off the case cover and waited for this to happen. I have actually seen the fan running full speed within the split second it takes me to look in the case after getting the "CPU fan failure" notification. I'm using the Zalmann 7700cu with a 120mm fan. Its only a guess, but I don't think its an RPM issue because I've disabled Cool 'n Quiet and am not using any other software to ramp down (and quiet) the CPU fan, so its running like a banshee right from the get go. I'm running the 600W Enermax Noisetaker PSU, so I doubt seriously its a power issue. The fan is one huge mother and due to the intermittent nature of the problem, I'd bet its caused by inertial delay with the fan just not ramping up fast enough to catch up with the BIOS. I'm running 2 gig OCZ rev2 mem and an FX55. Is anyone with other processor speeds experiencing this?
I am running the stock BIOS and I am not overclocking yet -- I just haven't had the time yet...

just incase anyone else bought an Antec case with a psu it it and wants the asus sli to work on it. I'm running my board with:

3500+ 64, asus sli deluxe, 1 gig corsair, one chaintech 6600gt, stock fan, raptor 10,000 Western Digital

all on my antec 350 watt stock psu that came with my case.

NVIDIA cannot decide to turn off the SLI capabilites of the graphics driver on purpose, unless it was technically not compatible with the system.

anyone want to take up the class action suit ?

Hmmm... I wouldn't be so sure this is "illegal". Is it also illegal for AMD to disable higher multipliers on "lower-end" Athlon64 chips? Is it illegal for NVidia to disable Quadro features on GeForceFX chips? The truth is... the law probably allows them to do what they are doing, because they -are- delivering exactly what was advertised (a non-SLI system). Such a case would most likely be thrown out immediately.

-S

The shady thing is that one product (graphics card) disables itself based on the absence of a different product (the nf4 sli chipset), even though the grpahic cards CAN operate without the nft-sli chipset, as shown by the fact that they worked with the nf4-ultra using earlier drivers.

User1234,
I've been in this business for 25 years and rest assured this happens on a daily basis. Nothing illegal. You get what you pay for in terms of performance. The vendor has every right to turn on or off any functionality based on what you paid for. It happens on high-end processors when the customer buys a 24 way and upgrades to a 32 way or storage when more disk is desirable. No worries.

I can remember moving a jumper 20 years ago to allow a 160 LPM printer to run at 300 LPM. Cost the customer more money, but also cost us (and customer) more in maintenance. This is pretty much SOP.

Maybe we could drop the litigation issue...

meh, what's wrong with you ? Don't you now that even alienware released a fully functional SLI system last month based on a Xeon motherboard with xeon chipset that has two pci-e x16 slots. But now with the new nvidia graphics drivers it will stop working in sli - because it's not a nf4-sli chipset. Do you think alienware would be cool with that ? (they already sold a bunch of these systems)

fact is id doesn't say anywhere that nvidia's sli ready video cards will only work with a special nvidia chipset - and up to now they worked with a variety of chipsets.

I still don't get it.
All we have to do is use conductive paint on the NF4 Ultra and it looks to the software like an NF4 SLI.

I may try this on my daughters machine, but not for mine......

In any case, I just ordered an A8N-SLI today.
Hoping beyond all hope that the bad experiences on this thread are out weighed by those folks having good luck with this board.

After all, I don't think those people with stable, working boards are reading this thread. At least I hope that is the case.

Thanks to all for input. Without your help, I would have woefully underpowered this beast and used inferior memory.

I now know the memory, PSU, vid card, CPU, disk, et al that I will use for this project.

Should receive everything by Tuesday.

Can anyone tell me whether or not you have completed an RMA though Asus themselves. I have no choice but to do one through them cause the website I bought the A8N from has a 5 day return which was fine cause my mobo worked for a week, then stopped. But all i have read about Asus's RMA procedure is that it takes forever and you might get something that works. I really just want to see if anyone has had a good experience with this process.

Does anyone know if the A8N-SLI will work with a PCI Video card?

I have a:

A8N-SLI deluxe
350W Power supply

When I tried to boot, the green light on the mobo did light up and the CPU fan did start to spin but no video.. the keyboard lights also did not flash, I don't have speakers plugged in, probably should but I'm guessing it doesn't work with PCI video..

PCI-e video cards on the way from newegg..

OK heres my experience with switching 6600 GT's to SLI 6800 ultras last night. I followed these steps on both machines and all is up and running well and stable.

1) unchecked SLI in nvidia software applet and it made me reboot.
2) didnt let machine restart and turned off power to power supply
3) pulled battery to motherboard and set jumper to far right pins to reset bios
4) removed second card and switched daughter card on board to single gpu mode
5) put jumper back in correct bios position and inserted battery.
Machine rebooted to one card properly.
6) In device manager, right clicked on remaining video driver and chose uninstall wich prompts to remove all nvidia software and all nvidia profiles. Picked Yes
7) shut machine down
8) placed bios in reset mode no battery no power
9) removed 1st 6600 GT and popped in first 6800 ultra
10) Made Bios live, Booted up and canceled windows message for finding new hardware
11) loaded nvidia 66.93 drivers and said yes to replace existing files then rebooted and set up display settings and refresh on monitor.
12) Shutdown and placed bios in reset mode no battery or power
13) added second 6800 ultra and changed daughter card to dual gpu
14) Made bios live and booted to detect second card.
15) checked off SLI which makes ya reboot
16) logged in and up and running
17) Upgraded to 67.66 Beta drivers

Note1: This was probably a long way arround things but this is how im getting things to work
Note2: The PC Power and Cooling 510 Turbo deluxe SLI Power supplies have dedicated power lines to each card wich i plugged in as well as left the 12 volt on the board plugged in and that seems to be fine
Note3: The two Ultras in the first machine are Asus, the two in the second are EVGA
Note4: 3DMark05 pegged the 1st machine at 9611 and the second machine at 9599 on first pass with no overclocking. More benchmarking tonight!

(Per machine)
Lian-Li Warrior (Xoxide) Black Aluminum case, blue led lighting (6 fans= 120mm blow hole exhaust top, 2 front 80mm intake, 2 side 80mm intake, 1 rear 80mm exhaust, dual blue cold cathode lights, 2 front usb 2 ports)
Asus A8n SLI Deluxe motherboard
Audigy 2 ZS THX soundcard
2 gig OCZ Platnum Rev 2 low latency 2-2-2-5 DDR 400 ram
Athlon 64 bit Clawhammer processor (FX 55) @2600
2 Geforce 6800 Ultra PCI Express cards Asus 1st machine, EVGA second machine
2 Seagate Sata 2 160 gig hard drives
1 Maxtor Sata 2 250 gig hard drive 16mb Cache
Plextor 16x dvd burner with 4x double layer recording
Samsung 16x DVD ROM ripper
Pc Power and Cooling 510 Turbo deluxe SLI power supply
Gigabyte Rocket 3d Pro CPU fan heat sink
Arctic Silver 5

CPU idle 39C
load 49 C (3 Hours of grinding in EQ2)

Unbelievably SMOKIN and thats without any OC

this board worked fine with my old Matrox 4mb PCI video card.... you may need to clear your CMOS jumper first to get it to work...

vision33r: I have used a Ati 9200SE 128mb PCI card as a test and it worked fine.

BTW, has anyone had the chance ot use the 1003 Final and check to see if the Maxtor NCQ drives work with it?

I have to cut in, I dont know how many people are having problems with this board but it is a complete joke!!!

I'm on my third motherboard, and still cannot get power to the GFX cards, so a bios update is not an option as no display. Perhaps, one in 30 times I get power to a single GFX card or both, usually only a flash of the power LED and half a spin of the fans.

I believe there is a confirmed problem with these boards, and I dont think Asus anticipated the power drain on the 12V rail. I'm using a Enermax Noisetaker 600W, the problem I think is this baby has two 12V rails, one 18A the other 17A, which just is not enough.

see: SLi Asus power problem

I have been in contact with Scan.co.uk and they are apparently working with Asus to solve this issue, in most cases apparently a bios update resloves this as it slows the massive peak power demand on the PSU when the system starts.

I have emailed Asus and apparently they are working on the problem.....

I await a Tagan 480W PSU (single 12V 28A rail) to see if this sorts the problem....

Has anyone else experienced this problem, any one have a quick solution?? Please email, PM or post to help me, this has been going on for 2 months now and I tire of it....

Asus SLi Deluxe
FX-55
2 XFX 6800GT's
74GB Raptor
Enermax 600W Noisetaker

All in pieces..... still no working!

You have a freaking beefy load dude... wtf are you thinking about getting an 12v 18amp PSU?

My computer will BARELY maintain stability on an 18amp(12v) thermaltake that I have and I am using a winchester which draws way less power than your FX-55, plus I only have one 6800GT at the moment... (with my thermaltake my 12v line dips form 12.1 to 11.7 during game loads, but when I switched to a Zippy that has 30amps on the 12v line my 12v goes from 12.01 to 11.99 : all tested with a Multimeter)

One thing I would do in your circumstance is: unplug EVERYTHING you don't need.

Also, have you tried a PCI vid card? I keep a spare PCI vid card lying around just for that purpose...

And have you tried it with just one 6800GT installed and not two? Also, you could put a winchester in if you got one... That uses about half of the power an FX uses...

I got a Tagan 480W Single 12V 28A rail today, this has had no effect
I've installed the 1003 bios using a PCI card to get display, no effect
This board is costing me lodas of money and time atm
I've tried only one card, still nothing, just a flash of the power LED and the slightest spin of the heatsink fan.
Can resetting the CMOS have any effect for this kind of problem?
What is going on? I can't believe it, it's my second baord, same problem, in fact worse, I never get power to the PCI-E lanes, the last one perahaps one in 30 times for SLi and one in 3 times for single mode.

Any-one else getting this, I'm pestering Scan and Asus atm, not sure if I've got a faulty board.
There must be people here running similare setups, Scan reckoned on 180Watts on a single rail to get this system on at peak load......

When the Ultra's arrive today does it makes sense i would use the 12 volt on the board as well as a dedicated line for each card into its power adapter, or just use the two dedicated lines and dont use the twelve volt in the board? Any ideas would be appreciated!

You have to use the Molex on the mobo or the red light will show and wont run, I have the 6800GT's and try to power them using the molex the the 6pin power.

Once again - you guys think that A8N-SLI boards will be able to hit 270 - 275 with 1:1, 1T (with good RAM and Winnie) with bios updates? Some of you must have more experience in this area... Tell me if it's worth to wait... ?

I would be surprised if ASUS didn't come up with something that meant speeds over 240mhz were possible with 1T Command Rate, but at the same time I doubt it is a sure fire thing. A few more of us need to contact them and make fully sure the BIOS Dev Team know it is the thing we want most... along with our maxtors.
