Thanks for the info iscsidude. Its a Leadtek 6800 256mb, not a GT or Ultra (i wish! ) so there shouldnt be any probs with the double width bracket thingy right? It doesn't even have a plug to hook into the psu directly. I did very briefly disconnect the chipset fan just to see how it affected the sound & there was zero difference, the same when i posted without the cpu fan on. From that i could only assume its the video card fan causing the excessive noise. Perhaps your chipset fan is abit dodgy?

iscsidude: by Slot 2, you mean the second one from the bottom?

I thought I had NCQ off, but I'll double check. When you had it on did you get corruption even without the Audigy?

I only got corruption with the Audigy (and I had AC97 off in the BIOS).

I downloaded the PDF manual and answered my own question about slot 2 (had to download it to RTFM). I would still like to know if you had disk corruption with NCQ on and no Audigy installed.

Thanks again.

Wow. I have this same supply and my system has been a rock for almost a month now... with and without the 24-pin adapter. *shrug*

Thanks for the tip mofrack, did you have to do any modifications on that Enermax 550 PSU? did it worked fine with just the 24 pin adapter? If it works I'll take the new enarmax 480 back and save $119.
Thanks!

hedrums,
Slot 2 whether you count from the bottom or the top. 3 PCI slots.

I got corruption before I plugged in the Audigy (with command queueing on) so you may be dealing with another problem. I only installed the device drivers from the Creative CD. I've had to many problems through the years with Creative's attempts at software.

Lumpeh,
That's right. If you don't have the double bracket, it won't matter which revision you use.

Also, after reading your note I unplugged the chipset fan.
Noise only dropped 1 Db. Turns out the noise is coming from my rear chassis fan. (I unplugged it to make sure) It is the only fan I haven't replaced, of the four in my case, with a variable speed fan. This makes fixing the problem MUCH easier than the chipset fan. Thanks!

Good for you!
Say, can you recommend a good make of variable fans? I could do with one for the rear that dont intefere with my wireless unlike the cheap one that is sat dormant in there right now.

Mine works with and without the adapter, I havent modded it in any way. Maybe you just got one that's putting out low volts on one of the rails? Its a shame these dont have adjustable rails, they are still pretty nice PSUs.

Sure. I went with the ThermalTake Smart Fan 2.
http://www.thermaltake.com/dcfans/smartfan/a1357.htm

I'm currently manually controlling three of them with a Nexus Controller. I crank them up when playing and turn them down when working.

I think I'll use the Zalman SmartFan 2 controller for the rear fan I just ordered. I have one left over from the Zalman CPU Cooler below.

I've left it at the default bios its shipped with. no issues with it so far.

*edit*

just loaded up cpu-z and it says 1002.
200mhz is the correct speed for the ram isn't it?

I've not had time to read through all 70 odd pages of this thread so has anybody had problems with the onboard audio with this mobo? My Plantatronics 60 Headset won't work with my new PC which uses this mobo, but will with my old one. Infact my speakers don't either.

Everything is setup correctly as far as I can tell and the drivers are up to date for the Realtek sound so I don't see what the problem is.

Thanks for any help.

I too am having a problem with the onboard audio. The volume is too low. I've owned a half-dozen computers over the years and the audio on this one is the lowest I've experienced. I am using a simple two speaker setup with non amplified speakers. I know I can replace the speakers with amplified ones, but I've been waiting to hear a reply from Asus on this issue. It's been a couple weeks since I filled out an email form on their web site describing my problem, so I guess I should give up on them.

Any one else with this problem? Any solutions?

Thanks

You're sure they're not amplified? Current audio chipsets are not designed to drive non-amplified speakers, I'm surprised they have worked on anything remotely recent..

By the way, last time when I sent reply to asus, I asked them to check this thread No answers, but I had just a question for them so it doesn't bother me, only seems that they are losing it

I've not tried using a sound card personally, my problem is with the damn onboard audio. It just doesn't want to work with the realtek drivers.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, the speakers I have are not amplified---only connect to the computer via the audio jack and have no external or internal power souce. I have tried several sets of speakers which came with computers purchased over the years and none seem to give out much audio with the A8N-SLI board. Drivers are Realtek.

I had feeling that amplified speakers would be required, but wanted to confirm it before I went out and spent the money. Now I get to do some research on speakers. Learing about the different products available is half the fun!

Ok i have this board a 3000+ 1 gig of kingston, 6600gt chaintech 128 and a eide ata 66 hard drive. now yesterday i got my 1st SATA hard drive. the bios sees it windows sees it as it installs but i get error loading operating system just after the hit any key to boot from cd rom(not hitting any key) so i was thinking drivers so i get a Nvidia 32 bit driver disk and try installing windows(xp pro w/sp1) i get the same thing. now the board works great with the junk eide 20 gig hard drive but i would love to get this sata hard drive to boot to windows. im not sure which bios version i have and not sure if that would cause the problem. but this is so frustrating! thank you!

Have you tried unplugging the "junk eide 20 gig hard drive" and see if you can boot?
If I understand correctly, you've installed XP on the new SATA drive.

I just wanted to report that the issue with Maxtor drives and NCQ has been solved with the latest Nvidia ForceWare drivers 6.39. I just installed the drivers and they enabled NCQ on my DiamondMax 10 drive by default, and I have not had any problems at all (last time I tried enabling NCQ I couldn't even get into Windows). Also I am running bios 1002.

Do you have the sata drive plugged in to the Nvidia(black) ports? Do you have the sata set as first hard drive in boot order in bios?
