I replaced my chipset fan today with a Swiftech MCX159-R. But I did a stupid thing!

I didnt see there was plastic cover on the chipset. So i cleaned the paste of with a cleaningfluid ive used to take away paste from my CPU. And the plastic bubbeld up a bit, so its not plain any more. Now i need to know the temp for my chipset.
What do i need to measure the temp ?

I just moved one of my thermal couples over to the chipset on top and sealed the top side with dumb dumb(bluegoo) so the reading is fairly accurate. It has been running in 45-50C range depending on use of the chipset(i was running prime 95 for about 12 hours today). I burned a cd and it hit 50.5C otherwise its been hanging around 47. Did this this moring so by no means is this real conclusive but should give you an idea but this is with the orginal HSF attached yet and I have alot of fans going so I have decent airflow. In order to cheeck the temp you need to get some sort of thermal sensor, and attach it to the the spot you want to check, you can buy them as case mods(I have seen some as cheap as $15 us ) don't use the infared ones they are high inaccurate for pinpoint only good for genreal temps.

after running prime95(about 12 hours) and one run through 3dmark with Q&C engaged I was running stable temps of
CPU=47(asus probe)
Mobo=39(asus probe)
topside of chipset(external TC) 47.7
GPU 1 HSF (external TC) 49
GPU 2 HSF (external TC) 49.2
GPU 1 internal says 57(i don't trust these)
GPU 2 internal says 53

My initial problem with Machine Check Exception BSOD's going away from changing a drive from cable select to master... has once again come back. This drive on my PATA PRI MA channel is a Maxtor 300GB DiamondMax 10 PATA133 drive. Removing this Drive all together seems to eliminate the problem.

I put this system together with immaculate care. Grounded with an antistatic strap, I had the standoffs for the board in, from there the board went in holding the edge of the PCB straight into the case. I have worked in an ESD protected environments before (footstraps, coats, and wristbands). I am using BIOS 1007-2 at this time.

From what I can gather, I get problems using SATA & PATA at the same time. Anyone else who is getting Machine Check Exception BSOD's using SATA & PATA?

Have you booted in safe mode?, and have you removed all components not needed to to POST then boot? I would also flash to a final variant of a BIOS once and see if that helps.
Try this link or search there data base using 0x0000009c as this is I assume the error you are recieving I have gotten once or twice after I had my hands in the case but never more then twice in a row.

1) I assume you are running with the latest chipset drivers? (6.39).. correct?

2) Have u contacted Maxtor to see if any firmware updates exist for this drive ? I believe others using MAXTOR drives with this board have had similar issues.. some of which may have been corrected with a firmware update...

No problems here - using the Nvidia SATA ports
WD 80Gb JD (8mb cache) Primary Master, boot drive.
WD 120Gb JB (8Mb cache) SATA
Seagate Barracuda 160Gb (8Mb Cache) SATA
Liteon 166S DVD ROM - Primary Slave
NEC 2500A DVDRW - Secondary Master
Liteon 52246S CDRW - Secondary Slave

Windows XP setup even picked up all the drives (With my P4 Springdale-865 board I had to disconnect the SATA drives otherwise I would get an invalid patition error when selecting the install partition).

Yes the XP-120 Fit onto the A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo. However I would suggest plugging the 12v connector onto the board first as it will be difficult to do after the XP-120 is installed. Plus the BIOS will complain that the fan is not working since the fan speed is slower than it wants. You will have to disable the error notice of continue to press F1 after each reboot. My system runs absolutely cool and the temp stays constant even when under heavy loads like while playing HL2, Doom 3, or Far Cry.

Hi all,

My apologies for just signing up now i need help, but I have a problem.

Sys specs: A64 3200, A8N Sli Deluxe, 480W PSU, 1GB Ram (2 x 512mb), HDD, Optical drive and GF6800

Basically I have my new PC all plugged in adn ready to go but the power button won't respond on the case. At all. I have checked that I have the power button on the correct pins on the mobo half a million times, it's not that. And the PSU is 480W and is also fine (trust me, the PSU is good for it). It's not that.

However I did have a bit of trouble plugging my PSU into the mobo initially. I plugged the 20 pin connector into the main slot leaving the bottom 4 pins free, I'm sure i got that right even though leaving 4 pins bare seemed a bit strange. But I plugged in the incorrect cable into the 4pin ATX12V socket. The (wrong) cable I plugged in there appears to my eyes to be the same as the 20 pin connector though I could be wrong. It wasn't til after i had attempted to power on the first time that I realised my error so the damage may have bee done.

Currently when I flip the PSU power switch at the back, the green light comes on, on the mobo, and the keyboard lights flick on once. Apart from that there is no other reaction, no slight HSF fan spinnage, no beeped error codes. Nothing.

So two question:
Would plugging the incorrect cable into the ATX12V port kill the mobo?

Does anyone know of something I haven't thought of that would stop the power switch from working? And a resolution.

Thanks for reading if you got this far.

I can't say for sure , but the best thing i can advise to you is , go to your local computer store and pick up the 20 - 24 pin power supply adapter .

That is what i am running and i have not had any problems since....

As far as the dammage being done at the initial startup , we should hope not , if so try and see if there is any warranties...

I've read up and i never seen anywere that running that 20 pin connector straight to the MObo is approved..

Hope this helps..

I bought my adapter for around $4.25

If the voltage of the connection plugged into the 12v slot on the board was higher than 12v you could have possibly damaged the board. I would recommend replacing the 20 pin connection you have in the atx slot with a 24-pin adapter just to be on the safe side.

Yes ! Thanks Guitar Daddy and everyone who responded to my issue.I have had the most succesfull bios update thus far.I was originally on bios 1002 and had no problems but......When i tried to overclock my 64 3000+ i only could reach a 2.0 gighz clock stable @ 225x9 HTTx4 and the Vcore wouldn't stick @ 1.5,it always resetted down to 1.40 , also when i rebooted the system,it would automaticaly underclock my CPU with the frequency still @ 225,it was weird the Q-fan controller would not disable,so i couldn't adjust my cpu fan by the controller,it had to be straight full speed or the lowest.

But after posting a few questions,i was informed that 1002 wasn't too great for oc'ing. So it was time to flash, and let me say aSUS update utility is very fast and efficient. After succesfully installing bios 1006 i have reached a 2.2gighz overclock with 245x9 HTTx4 Vcore succesfully sticking @ 1.5,Ram settings @ 2336 1T and when i reboot now,all my settings stay =).

Also i'd like to add that my Q-Fan can now be disabled and i can manually adjust my CPU fan speed.

This is by far the best update i've had with the bios,if your oc'ing and have any problems with ver 1002 i suggest updating.

I still haven't tried pushing the system any further but when i try to hit 2.4 then i'll let u guys know.

Peace thnx everyone..(Guitar Daddy) ...

Ok being a good OC newbie I decided to try 1007.002 the other night. So I started playing around with all the usual OC suspects and I came across a couple of things that I'd like to share.
I did all my testing exclusively with memtest86 booted from a CD so that if I had a "bad" OC config I wouldn't corrupt the boot sectors of my system.

1) My memory (2x512MB Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT) has a "magic number" for throughput of 2400MB/S. The closer I got to that the more likely I was to get a hang or complete failure to POST. Does this make sense?

2) The max memory setting AND the cpu multiplier work together. So to say that setting your max mem to 333 means a 5:6 (or 400 * 0.833) ratio based on 333/400 is a bit of an over simplification.

I believe the formula is actually
Round(CPU Multiplier / (Max Mem/400),0)

So for example
Mem Divider = 266
CPU Multiplier = 8
Effective Mem Divider = 12
FSB = 300
CPU Mhz = 2400
Mem Mhz = 200

A slightly more complicated example (my runtime settings):
Mem Divider = 266
CPU Multiplier = 8.5
Effective Mem Divider = 13
FSB = 306.5
CPU Mhz = 2605.4
Mem Mhz = 200.4

I created a matrix and checked a couple of these with CPU-z and I got the result I predicted. I'd appreciate any feedback.

NOTE: Save the following as a csv and then open in excel.
---START CSV---
,,,,CPU Multiplier ,,
Memory Divider,Ratio (Divider/400),9,8.5,8,7.5,7
500,1.25,7,7,6,6,6
433,1.0825,8,8,7,7,6
400,1,9,9,8,8,7
333,0.8325,11,10,10,9,8
266,0.665,14,13,12,11,11
200,0.5,18,17,16,15,14
---END CSV---

However I don't think that is the end to the memory throughput mystery. I dont quite have a handle on the formula for different memory latency settings.

If anyone is looking for an A8N-SLI Deluxe, i have a brand new one, unopened for sale. I had my last one RMA'd, but have decided to go with another brand of mobo (a non-SLI version).

PM me if interested.

Hi all,

I bought an A8n SLI in Jan and aside from needing to upgrade power supply its been fine.

However, I just bought a DNTV Live digital TV decoder and after the drivers install ok, reboot, I start the application and get a BSOD. I tried a parallel install too, same issue.
I tried the decodee in another machine and it works ok (A corporate Compaq - Intel), so I tried my BArton - no worries. But blue screen always with this SLI board.

So far, the decoder card manufacturers are unable to help, so I thought I'd pop back to Anandtech. I've flicked back thru a few pages of this thread and seen that tmchow had issues with two TV tuner cards.

I had concluded an issue either between PCI-e video cards and my decoder, or more specifically with my Asus 6800 (not GT or anything). From seeing tmchow's experience, I wonder if it's just this board and TV stuff.

cheers

can't seem to find those 6.53 drivers???

I am having trouble with my ethernet. Maybe this will help...

Are they on the nVidia site or Asus?

Thanks:

Those are the two things that were bad in the 6.39 drivers for me.

that was a total waste of time now the firewall doesnt even work on antihacking

siiiggghhhh

I got my microsoft router to finally update so now it can see it properly thought that may have been an issue with the nforce.
no other issues but 3.5 did stop trying engage everytime i load windows now. Took a couple of trys but now it seems good.

Nvidia?

use the nvidia link from the nvidia tray if you are running it, it prompts you for your application, both the video drivers and the nforce drivers are new. you would want nforce 4 standalone then pick your OS etc

same thing with video driver

otherwise i think this is the link http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.aspthe

Ya sure I'm running 2.6Ghz. Memory clocked back to stock to get there. Have had no luck pushing past about 237 on a 1:1/CPUx9 ratio (see my post previously re:why cpu mult factors into memory divider)

Anyways... here are my settings (CAUTION I AM NOT EXPERT AT THIS STUFF):
Memory 266Mhz divider, 2-3-3-6 1T@2.85V
HTT = 3x
CPU Multiplier = 8.5 @ 1.5V
FSB = 306.52
Locked PCI @ 100Mhz and the other one @ 33Mhz
q-fan = disabled
Got 2 sticks of Corsair CMX512PC3200C2-PT running in dual channel.

I boot into windows at a 285FSB (for safety) then clockgen to 306 during login. Had a couple of "random crashes" about 1 every two or three days, but have stabilized (fingers crossed) with 1007.002.

Anyone got any tips on how to improve on this?

John

A8N-SLI deluxe does not obey BIOS memory settings when 4 DIMMS are installed.
When I set CPU multiplier to 240 RTC :11 and MaxMemClock to DDR333
RTC is actually 22.
We can see that with CPUz or Memtest86+

MaxMemClock : DDR333
CPU multiplier under 238
Values with memtest86+
Rd-Wr Delay 4
Wr-Rd Delay 1
Rd/Wr bypass 8
Refresh rate 7,8 us
Command Rate 2T
Row cycle time 11
RAS to RAS delay 2
Write recovery 3

MaxMemClock : DDR333
CPU multiplier over 238
Values with memtest86+
Rd-Wr Delay 6
Wr-Rd Delay 1
Rd/Wr bypass 8
Refresh rate 7,8 us
Command Rate 2T
Row cycle time 22
RAS to RAS delay 6
Write recovery 3

What is the problem?
Can we do something to correct it?
Is this an ASUS bug?
Could a BIOS update correct it?
Is this an Athlon 64 problem?
