Need opinions on which mobo to go with Athlon64 3200+. Gigabyte GA-K8NPRO or the ASUS K8V/DELUXE ? No OC will be done. I was looking at having Monarch or ABSPC build it as I would surely screw it up. Monarch offers more options as ABSPC only givesone option on mobo which is the GA-K8NPRO. ABSPC also only give sone option on hard drives which is dual drives in Raid 0. Any comments appreciated. Thanks, Paul.

Neo,
From what I've read slots one and three should be used when using two sticks. I don't see why your raid would have a problem when you switched slots......thats strange....

XRDirtHead,
Yeah, tell me about it. I know setting up RAID was kinda risky and I wont be able to change my hardware, but I didnt know that I wouldnt be able to change the memory slots either. I'll try it again later but kinda scared incase something goes wrong and I lose my array permanently!

I just found out from OCZ's website that in order to run DDR400, the memory must be in slot 1 &2 or SLot 1 & 3. No wonder it cant work.
Now I must find a way to change my memory slot without losing my RAID array. Any suggestions?

I lost mine by trying turbo mode with my memory....ugh....I didn't have anything to lose as far as files and stuff but reformatting and reloading windows really sucks.

I changed my memory slot from slot 3 to slot 1 and it works
My memory is running now at 410Mhz
Funny though it wont work when changed slot 2 to slot 1 but doesnt matter as long as its working now

I have a strange problem with my setup; in short:

Boot --> Fine
BIOS access --> Fine
Windows Me install --> Fine
Via Hyperion 4-1 v4.51 drivers install, reboot --> Fine
Ati Catalyst v4.3 driver install, reboot --> Total crash! Format C: needed.

I've tried the Ati Catalyst driver v4.1 & v4.2 too, unfortunately with the same result. Replacing the Radeon 9800XT videocard with an GeForce4 Ti 4200 did not solve anything too:

Boot --> Fine
BIOS access --> Fine
Windows Me install --> Fine
Via Hyperion 4-1 v4.51 drivers install, reboot --> Fine
nVidia Detonator driver install, reboot --> Total crash! Format C: needed.

What's wrong?? Installing videocard drivers results in a total crash.

Get rid of Windows ME.

Seriously though, it sounds like you may have a memory problem. What memory are you using? What are the settings? What slots do you have them in?

Update, I tried setting Windows up again on my RAID drives today with the memory settings I've had good luck with on an IDE drive. I could not get Windows XP Pro to load with current settings and had to bump the memory back down to 333MHz. Everything is up and running fine for a few hours now though on the RAID array (at the slower memory clock).

We will see how everything pans out in the next couple weeks but I had the system running for over a month now on the IDE drive with NO problems at all (2 36GB SATA Raptor drives were just sitting on my desk depreciating). I kept the IDE drive installed and just set the bios to boot from the VIA RAID drives. So, if anything does go wrong I can still boot from the IDE drive by simply changing the boot settings in the bios if the RAID fails.

I may invest in some newer (approved) memory if I run into anymore problems. This is Corsair XMS PC3200 memory less than a year old though.

Issues with RAM, issues with BIOS, no self-updating drivers (think MSI), issues with the sound, the onboard NIC is not on the WinXP AMD64bit CD, stability (as reported here)

I wish I had gone with my gut, and gone with the MSI board.

Granted I'm not a bios expert, but it shouldn't be this hard to get this board reasonably well tweaked.

Man, the onboard NIC is about the only thing I haven't had trouble with on this board...well, that and the USB ports.

I'm using a pair of Corsair XMS3200 512MB (TWINX1024-3200LLPRO), I've put them into slot 1 & 2, settings: 2-3-2-6.

Try slots 1 & 3 and bump DIMM voltage to 2.7V

I'm a first time builder, and I'm having a heck of a time getting my system to do anything at all now. I've got the 64 3000+ on the K8 deluxe. When I powered up, I got no video, and received the audio "system failed cpu test." After reading this entire post, the only suggestion to a problem similar to mine was to reset the CMOS, which I did. Now when I power up, I still don't get any video, but now I also don't get the audio post either. I have since unplugged everything and replugged everything. If I power up with nothing but the cpu and RAM, I get the audio post "failed VGA test," which is no surprise, but when I seat the video card (tried 2 different cards my roommates 64MB AOpen and my Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro) I get nothing. Help!
Thanks

Would a RAID array be more sensitive to memory incompatibilities than a typical IDE drive? More prone to crashing?

I just know that as soon as I bump this memory back up to 400MHz the system will crash. I couldn't even get Windows to install on the RAID drives until I lowered the memory clock.

I decided to just suck it up and buy some Kingston memory. If I still have problems I'm going to RMA this board and hold out for a nForce3-250 board.

So far I had not had any problems with the RAID array apart when I tried overclocking it too much. I have since broke my RAID array.
As for the memory, I think the board is a bit crazy. Originally I had my memory at slot 2 & 3 but it was running at DDR200. When I tried to change the slots from slot 2 to slot 3, it broke my array so I replaced it back to its original place and everything works fine. Then I changed the slots again from slot 3 to slot 1 and it works fine at DDR400. I didnt even need to increase the vdimm.

I have now decided not to run my hdd on RAID. Since I have 2 hdd, should I put it at SATA 1 and SATA 2 or should I put it at PRI SATA and SEC SATA for optimal performace?

The ASUS Manual for the K8V sez' not to install double sided dimm's onto slots 2 and 3. Maybe this was the reason why?

[As Shown on K8V layout sticker and manual]
SATA 1 & 2 = VIA Onboard
Primary RAID(PATA), Primary/Secondary SATA = Promise Controller

VIA Onboard : Better read speed and lower CPU utilization
Promise Controller : Slightly better write speed. Hard Drive light works on ATX case/chassis, Easier to setup individual hard drives on (IMO anyways).

I'm using the onboard VIA controller for my RAID. I also put in some new memory. I hated to spend the money on memory but I just had to see if that is what is causing the problems I've been having with the RAID. I bought Kingston memory right off the ASUS approved memory list. It is double sided but so far eveything is going smoothly.

I have everything set to auto for the time being and the memory is in slots 1 and 3.

I'm really pleased with this mobo (K8V Deluxe SE). I have my RAM running stabile at 2-3-2-5 and everything seems to be working great except one tiny thing. When I boot up it says that "BIOS is not installed", but then it boots fine into Windows XP Pro. What could be the problem? When I run CPU-Z it says that I'm using "American Megatrends Inc. version 1001.005". So why does it say I don't have BIOS installed when I boot up? any help is appreciated

My guess is this sensor is near something hot, possibly next to something that blocks it's airflow.

If anyone can point me to the sensor's location on the board, i'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I have the same problem. My cpu with C/Q on idles between 27 and 30 but my case is always 33 - 36. The mobo sensor must be right next to some caps or power regulators or something hot. Hell, it might be on the back of the board behind the cpu socket. The air coming out of my psu is slightly warm and the air out the back case fan is room temp. There's no way my case temp is that high. I'm on the latest bios too.
