Fixed my prob - it was the ram. The COrsiar 3500C2 (Winbond BH-%) was incorrectly branded - don't know what it was, but it's going back to Corsair. I put in Muskin 2-2-2 and it works fine. I'm still tweaking it, but it's near perfect right now.

My system specs are:

ASUS K8V
AMD 64 3000 +
512 Mb DDR 400 Kingston KVR400X64C3A
Western Digital IDE (master) + Seagate IDE (slaves) hard drives
WIN XP Pro

I am trying to install a Western Digital SATA hard drive as an IDE with no success. I've tried the SATA 1 VIA and the Promise connector. During the POST the Fastrack does not recognize the BIOS neither the VIA RAID. I'm running out of ideas of what to do. Mayeb I have to bring back the HD to the store to check if it is working.

I'm also having problems to make an ATI TV Wonder VE to work. I've installed the latest drivers but everytine I start the TV the system freezes and goes to the BSD. It gives an error related to the CPU. Checksum error. I've read somewhere that P4 with Hypertransport is having problems with this TV card because of Win XP. I wonder if AMD 64 is the same.

Thanks,

F.

fodao,
During my setup I COULD NOT get Windows to recognize my HDD on the Promise controller. I even moved it to the Promise AFTER setup and it BSOD'd then. So, my recommendation would be to use the VIA if you can't get the Promise to work. After all, it IS a VIA chipset. As for the ATI card, good luck with that. I got my girl an ATI TV Wonder VE Remote Control edition and it would do the same thing with the ATI software. However, I downloaded a piece of software called D-Scaler that does let you watch TV and it worked fine. Obviously the remote doesn't have full functionality and recording isn't an option, but it works for now. It wasn't working in a Gigabyte Athlon XP mobo and I will be playing with it in my rig soon, so I'll let you know how that works out.

crazymofo,
Kingston PC-4000 isn't a "waste" in the K8V, but the K8V has DICK for OCing abilities so you won't get the full DDR500 out of those chips in this board (in my opinion). You'd be better off spending your money on some good Corsair or OCZ memory with 2-2-2 timings at DDR 400 with this board. However, I am using a 512MB stick of the Kingston in my board at this moment to test it and it works fine. Actually runs SLIGHTLY quicker than my 2x256MB Corsair PC-3200LL TWINX512-3200LLPT. I work for Best Buy and get a helluva deal on the Kingston and that is the ONLY reason why I'm using it.

Well, what I did was go to a local store and get an Abit AV8 (damn don't ya just love the similarity between the Asus A8V and the Abit AV8 hehe). After putting it together, I'm up and running for at least 20 minutes now.

Just a note, if you do use the Abit AV8 with a watercooling system then it will beep like nuts because its looking for the cpu fan. Just go into the bios and disable the beep for it.

Hopefully this setup stays good.

hey i was just wondering what your opinions are about the onboard sound on this mobo.

For me, i've finally hooked up speakers (pretty decent ones, too) to this system and i'm noticing that the sound sort of cracks every once in a while. i will check later if its just a problem with the connection or the mp3, but i wanted to ask what you guys think about this: is it better for me to use the onboard sound or to use an old soundblaster live value card i have?

i'm more concerned with sound quality i guess. i've heard things about onboard sound requiring more cpu work than any pci card, though.....

Yeah... that's what I thought too, I don't know about bringing the AGP fsb above 66MHz. This board doesn't have AGP lock right?

EDIT: I'm probably gonna get the ABIT MAX3.

Hey man, thanks for the tips! I'll try the VIA next time. But I have a question: if you are connecting only 1 SATA hard drive, do you still have to setup a RAID 0 configuration?

From what I've read in other foruns, the ATI TV card is really a bitch to make it work. Itr was working in my previous system (WIN XP Pro, Athlon 800 MHz, Gigabyte mb), but in the new one I'm having problems. I'll try this software D-Scaler. How does it work? Is it a subsitute to the ATI multimedia? Do I have to uninstall the ATI multimedia and keep the drivers?

I only got a Kingston because the cheaper SAMSUNG memory didn't work. I was having memory problems. So I decided to go for the best.

Hey guys hopefully someone can help me figure this out.
My computer was working fine yesterday night, was cycling it on & off trying fans and then left it off and went to sleep.
This morning powered it on and nothing except for speakers saying "System Failed CPU Test".

Also strange is that the system powers it ON as soon as I turn on the psu from standby mode.
(I think I had the mobo turn off the system last, this morning the on button did nothing so tried the psu switch, moving it to off, and then switched it again and immediate power)

I tried switching psus, same problem. disconnected power to all ide devices, same, removed video card same. removed mobo batt and reset bios, same...

atx 12v is plugged in

full system specs

Asus K8V SE Deluxe
AMD 3200+ 64-bit 512L2
Ati radeon 9700 pro
512 3200 crucial
200gb hitachi
Quite a few fans

this is all on a 430watt antec True power

i believe that the key would be figuring out why the system starts automatically but then i don't know that much. thanks

now it's just bare motherboard with cpu and fan connected to psu, when psu switched on still automatically starts system. no shorts or anything possible, speakers still say cpu failed

For the ATI drivers... don't load the drivers that come with the card, download the updated drivers and it should work fine. Worked for me.

I just lost my BIOS to the stupid EZFLash 1 week ago. I had to take out the chip and flash it somewhere else. I don't think I'll be upgrading the BIOS anytime soon...

Another thing: Have you guys activated the Quite mode in the BIOS that controls the CPU fan? I did that and after while the fan simply stopped!!! The ASUS probe started beeping and I turned off the computer. I de-activated that option of course. Stick to the AMD Cooling that is good enough! ASUS not only f**** up my BIOS but they almost burned my CPU. I'm not that confident in their products anymore...

Mafiaz,

Maybe your CPU really failed! If you only have psu + mb + CPU + memory, there is not much else you can disconnect. It could be mb also. Can you take the CPUI back to the store and test it in another system?

yeah, that almost happen to me, i saw my cpu fan going down after I put the computer to standby and woke it up. The fan spin so slow, almost reach to 600 while the cpu temp is going up and up. I was scare that it will burn my cpu. But after 600ish the fan spin up. I don't think that the fan is working that good, so I turn off the q fan and let the fan spin at full speed most of time (around 3000ish). I think this is good because with cool and quiet, my computer is usually around 30~35ish during normal use. And at intense use, it will be around 50ish, so it's not bad. Cool and quiet is good but I think the fan has problem.

oh btw, do you guys have this weird problem with your mouse. When I turn my computer off, the optical mouse's light is still on, that's kinda weird. It never happen to me before but with this mobo it's always the case. My mouse is microsoft optical mouse that has usb port but I connect the mouse to the ps port as I found that is more stable.

fodao,
You don't have to setup a RAID array if you don't want to. Using the VIA controller, just make sure you load the drivers during WinXP install (Put floppy in and hit F6 at beginning of setup) or I guess have them available at boot if you already have Windows setup. But on the VIA controller it should work fine.

mafiaz,
I agree with fodao, check the CPU first. The mobo is reporting that CPU failed, so chances are its not your mobo. Try another CPU and then replace the mobo. Get back to us after that

And I hadn't turned on Q fan yet, but I heard that it only works properly with the AMD Retail fan anyway. CnQ works fine, forget QFan!

So, thestory goes like this: this board ain't the best, far from it.
Got mine today, xp won't install(and I installed xp on a lot of systems, so I know all the tricks). Tried everything, BIOS settings, ACPI, no ACPI, Pnp, no PnN etc etc
The drivers for the controlers and the F6, the F5, you call it, nothing would work.
Then, I wanted to update the bios(from 001) and guess what, the EzFlash should be called EzDoom ya' board
Tomorrow I'll get my money back. Still looking for alternatives and hard to decide between chaintech, msi, epox. I need stable. Don't care much about 1%+ or -, I won't feelit anyway.
For you, the beginner, better stay away from this board(beside, it ain't the first ASUS board with problems I had)

well, i think what is going on is that if you can get this thing to work, it will be working great if not, there's trouble one after another. I also got trouble with the board but few fix here and there, it's been working so far.

BTW, I heard abit is a good board. Also, since you are replacing the board, I would suggest get nvidia's board or the pro version if you are into OC.

roibm, i've heard that the MSI K8N Neo Platinum is a rock solid board. Great features, great stability, better OCing than this VIA POS, and a good price. $124 @ NewEgg. I had an MSI nForce2 board and it was great. I got this board with an EPP deal, so I'm stuck with it till I can sell it; but get out while you can!!

fbrdphreak,

My Win is already installed in the IDE HD. I've tried to install the sATA HD on the VIA with no success. The BIOS doesn't even recognize! It says no driver on the mastr 0. Therefore I'm beginning to think that this HD is dead on arrival! Gotta take back to the store to check it. Another hypothesis is that my power supply is not good enough. It says 450W but probably it is only 400W. It is not a first rate one. I have already 2 IDe HD connected plus a case fan. I wonder if there is enough power left for the SATA HD. How much power supply you guys have?

roibm

I also had problem installing Win XP. What error do you get? It ended up being memory problem. I swaped a Samsung for Kingston and it worked. Too bad you didn't read my warning earlier about the EZCrap!!! How can they release such a piece of sh** ?

I'm not a beginner but this has been the worse upgrade I ever had! I wonder if it is beacuse the mb is crap or because the technology is new. I read good reviews about this mb. Go figure...

Is anyone having problems with USB ports running really slow?
I have an Epson 1670 and both my laptop and A7N8X Dlx can scan 300dpi color image w/o stopping.
With K8V SE Dlx it pauses every 2secs.

The USB2.0 hard drive enclosure seems pretty slow too.

(I'm using the USB 4/5 6/7 headers, WinXP SP2 RC2, Bios 1004.004)

Actually, i got so much trouble from this board, I'm sure ot in the mood to give it another chance. No baby, this board could go in h3ll, I don't care. I hate it. I slept only 4 hours last night because of this board(tried everything).

I think I'll go for k8n, I herad it's stable, decent features and a lovely layout.

Roibm,

I almost felt like you. But after changing the memory the system became stable. So I'm giving it one last chance. Let us know how the K8N goes.

So, I gave away the Asus(remember, after the EzDoom ya' board the board was.... like.... uhhhmmm dead)
I got a full refund and I went the shop next door and got the 8KDA3+ since the K8N was not in stock and I couldn't wait anymore(I need the damn machine for renderind).
The memory is pretty good, Infineon PC3200 CL3(2x512), was on the list of supported ASUS modules and does pretty good in oveclocking too. I used it to overclock my mobile athlon xp and believe me, no problem at all. So the memory is no issue. To mention again, yesterday I was running stock on everything(not a single mhz faster) and pretty conservative timings too.
I can't wait to see what my new babe can do. I'll let you know how it goes, maybe I'll start some thread on my new board.
Ah, it will be driving an 3200+ boxed with this markings:
ADA3200AEP4AX
