Hey, has anyone tried that Corsair TwinX 3200XL 2.0-2-2-3 with the ASUS K8V? I'm wondering if both banks can be filled and work fine.

I had some Corsar TwinX 3200LL (TWINX512-3200LLPT) 2x256 and it worked fine. I think they were the same timings, check Corsairs specs on it. Worked great, and actually according to Sandra had a little better bandwidth than the Kingston PC-4000's I had in there right now 'cuz of the tighter timings.

ok 2 things:

1. whenever i start up XP from being cold, Windows Explorer only recognizes 1 of my HDD's. i have two older HDD's installed on an IDE ribbon. now one HDD is older than the other; the newer one (Seagate) is the one with all the system files and everything on it. the other HDD (Western Digital) was gonna be used for storage. if i go into the BIOS first before booting into Windows, then the second HDD will be recognized in Explorer. this has never happened with me before and basically i was wondering why this is happening and what i can do to fix it.

2. what is the best way to update the BIOS? i've read for the K8V SE that certain ways will screw up the BIOS and cause the person to have it reflashed.

System Specs:
Athlon64 3200+
K8V SE MoBo
768MB Corsair XMS RAM
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Seagate HDD & Western Digital HDD

is anyone using XP 64-bit edition??

no troubles installing the OS and i don't seem to be facing any of the issues described in this epic thread, but once the OS is installed i insert the K8V motherboard CD supplied and it doesn't work. autoruns OK, but returns an error, some sort of kernel error and it can't run ???.dll.

trying to install the drivers manually also doesn't work, as most of them aren't compatible with this platform.

so basically, WHAT THE *#@! is going on???? this is a 64-bit platform which doesn't even come with drivers for one of the few 64-bit OS's...

any ideas would be much appreciated

System Specs:
Windows XP 64-bit
Athlon 64 3000+
K8V SE Deluxe
2x512MB DDR400 PC3200

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but what should the idle/underload temperature(s) be with this motherboard running an AMD A64 3500+? HSF is a Zalman CNPS7000. It's my friend's system and it seems to be running too hot, ~130F (55C) idle...

I just have the stock HSF and it idles between 35-37 C and under load it hasn't gone over 47C. Might want to reseat the HSF or just try the stock one, it works just fine for this CPU.

wow jonny that's pretty low. Mine runs at lower 40s with a pretty sizable HSF on it. 55 isn't horrible, but it is on the high side.

Anyone try running the onboard promise controller in IDE mode (non raid), along with a PCI Promise 100 controller? I'm pretty sure they don't work well together. System will post, but wont boot into any OS. It just resets back to the startup/POST routines.... Any way around this?

Yeah I don't think that PCI Promise controller will work man. I had an ITE controller in my PCI slot and I had to disable the Promise controller altogether just to get into the ITE BIOS. I don't think that controller likes PCI HDD controllers on its turf lol.

Just received my K8V Deluxe SE... Does anyone know if v1.12 is the latest board revision?

Edit -

Just saw that there's a 1.13 out there, so... anyone know what the diff is? Worth it to try and rma for a newer one? Is there one even newer than the 1.13?

Thx!

Did you plug in both of the power leads - the big mobo one and the little 4 pin one too?

I think you can plug in speakers or headphones to the built-in audio and it will tell you what might be wrong. I haven't tried this myself yet.

I just read thru all 38 pages of this thread trying to get a better understanding of this mobo and if I knew what I knew now, I wouldnt' have bought it.

Anyways, I just ordered my ideal game rig from newegg and got it all yesterday (including this mobo) assembled everything, hit power and nothing happens except for my cpu, video and case fans turning on. No beeps or anything. Spent all of last night tinkering with it and nothing happens.

Today, I call ASUS tech support and 2 hours later, the guy tells me to try powering it up with just a CPU to see if I get any beeps. Nothing. Tried re-seating heatsink but still the same story. The only conclusion for me was that my CPU was bad, so I RMA'ed it back to newegg.

I guess my question is. When I get my new CPU back I am going to try powering up just the CPU and mobo to see if anything happens. If not, I can assume the mobo is bad. But if the onboard LED is lit and the case fans are working doesn't it imply that the mobo is at least functioning? What if I try powering up my mobo with absolutely nothing in it, what would happend? I am so very dissapointed and frusterated at this point. What conlcusions would you draw from this disaster?

Thanks.

Triggerhappy, yes you can plug your speakers into the onboard sound and it will provide an audio error message in most cases. This is great for troubleshooting a system.

mhopkin, your logic does make sense: if your system still doesn't book, my first guess would NOT be the mobo. The power LED and fans let us know that power is distributing through the board. I guess there could be issues with the northbridge or maybe even the socket itself, anything can and will happen with complicated electronics like this If the CPU doesn't fix it, go ahead and assemble your system bare bones only. Video, Mem, CPU, mobo, PSU. That will reduce the amount of troubleshooting elimination. Get back to us from there and hopefully we can narrow it down for you. And yes, list all your system specs

Well, lets see here... Everything is working so far... I just put everything together and when I turn my new rig on it displays for a few seconds: Serial_ch0 Master No Drive & underneath: Serial_ch1 Master no drive... under that it says to hit tab. So i do and it just shows the same messages, with other info: Create Array, Delete Array,Create/Delete Spare, Serial Boot Array, Serial number view. And i cant select any of em. Though if i dont press tab, turn on the comp and just sit there and watch it the same message displays for a few seconds and after that i hear an audible: System Completed POST, now booting from operating system. And a screen comes up that says: Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I tried putting in an OS and pressing a key but nothing, the message just pops up right under the same message over and over again. Then i read the ASUS User guide, it said during post hold down the delete key, so i do as instructed and i get a screen that says: Enter CURRENT Password:. So not knowing any, i just pressed random keys and it says: Password check failed. Then the voice says again: "System Completed POST, now booting from operating system." I checked and checked over and over eveything is plugged in the jumpers are on the right settings...So help to fix this strange problem is much appreciated.

My system specs:
AMD 64 3200+
ASUS K8V DE
1 gig Corsair DDR 400
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
80 gig Maxtor SATA
+ 1.5 and DVD/CDROM

Those are my specs but are irrelevant at this point because I can't get the CPU (by itself, out of the case with nothing else) to even beep. I did notice however slight scratches in the base of the heatsink prior to installing it. I read in the AMD instructions that if there were blemishes that it wouldn't function right but I didn't know how severe they had to be. After narrowing down completely to the CPU I figured I had it isolated. I sent it back to newegg so hopefully the replacement will work.

If I were to plug in the mobo to the power supply would I get any response, assuming it was a functioning board?

The thing that scares me is that most people reported hearing an audible voice saying the CPU test failed where as I just saw/heard nothing. Does the CPU have to be in the board for that warning to occur? Any comments would help, thanks.

I finally decided to just disable the onboard promise controller. On that note, good thing i got this board with a combo from AMD because if i had paid full price for it, i'd want my money back. As it is, i'm on the verge of selling this crap off and buying the MSI.

This has got to be the pickiest mobo i've ever used. Just a few hours ago i had the thing up and running fine. I shut down, plug a 160gig drive where the 40 gig drive was plugged into (same ports, jumper settings, everything), and boot back up. System hangs at blank screen right after the "loading windows" screen clears. Hm. That's odd. Switch back to the 40 gig. System boots up fine. Shut down and plug in 160 again. System hangs at the same spot. WTF? Did this twice more to make sure it wasn't something stupid i was doing.

When i was messing around with my hard drives in various channels, half the time the system wouldn't boot into windows for some arbitrary reason. Not to mention it refuses to boot with both promise controllers enabled. I'm just glad that so far my memory seems to work ok with this heap of scrap metal.
