NOTE: Even though I got this board for practically free with a sweet EPP bundle, I plan on purchasing the MSI at some point in the near future if that tells you anything about this crap board.

Thanks for your honesty, i really appreciate it. I heard a lot of goof things about MSI. However I am doubting any venture into the land of 64. Maybe i should go MSI. Maybe I should go XP-M on a socket A board. I think one of the things stopping me is that i have about 5 x IDE/ATA devices and 2 x CDROM/DVD. Not many boards can handle that. Maybe i shouldnt really care and just get an MSI 64 or any good board and throw in a PCI ATA Raid card.

Thanks again fbrdphreak!

I've got the k8V SE Deluxe with A64 3200+ yesterday. So far, its working fine.
Here's some comments on my experience, and hopefully it would be of some use.

For some reason, after I put in all the drives, the CPU fan would not spin, so my computer would not start up. That was fixed by resetting the CMOS switch.

The audio drivers that came with the CD just plain sucked. Static noise all over. The beta drivers on ASUS's site helped a lot.

Right now I'm running at 230FSB (2.53G), with 1.5V. I'm not upping the voltage because the heatsink/fan that came with it (I got in on the AMD bundle as well) doesn't work that great, about 54C max running prime95 at these settings.

My ram is a samsung 512MB PC2700, and I'm also running PC2700 speed as well only, and it's stable right now. Had no use for that SATA and promise controller, so disabled that, but I put in my own ATA100 PCI card.

It came with Bios 1001, and I flashed it to 1004
230FSB is a little strange, and I'm surprised that it doesn't crash my DOOM3, since the AGP is way over spec.

Can anyone help me in getting my corsair xms3200c2 to run at 400mhz? The highest this board can run the ram is at pc2700 speeds even with the ratio at 2:1. I've tried the 1004 and the beta bios with no avail.

You're not using 3 sticks are you? If so, it defaults to PC2700. Other than that, it should detect it as PC3200 on auto settings.

Be careful with OCing this setup. Be very careful. Something really weird happened when I just did some tinkering with OCing. I remember I got it to run at 2.4Ghz (whatever FSB that is, like 220 or something) and decided to up that some more. I think I tried 230 (Yeah, I know you're supposed to only up a few Mhz at a time, blah blah) and it wouldn't boot. So I reset the CMOS and then it wouldn't recognize my HDDs. I thought that was just plain crazy, but nothing I could do would get it to work. Finally I pulled the ol' 7GB out of mothballs and loaded XP on it real quick. Once that was done, I attached my secondary 80GB (where I have all of my important files thankfully) and Windows of course found errors when it did the "drive verification." It repaired what looked like a bunch of Index errors and whatnot and all was well with the storage drive. I popped in the SATA 80GB (primary) and no matter how many times I tried to fix the errors, it wouldn't boot right. If I remember right, I was able to finally get access so I got all of the few other important files off the primary drive and finally formatted the damn thing.
The only reason I can think that this would have happened is because I'm using the VIA SATA controller, and isn't that one run through the PCI bus? Well, if so, then my guess is that OCing the FSB changed the PCI bus and threw off something with the SATA data. Dunno, but it sucked and wasted a night of perfectly good gaming. Anyway, be careful with this board and OCing.

Yee,
First of all, give us your system specs. Second of all, make & model # of Corsair RAM. Third, what slot are you putting it in? Make sure it is in the slot closest to the CPU, because I believe Asus recommends keeping that slot occupied first. I used some Corsair TWINX512-3200LL PC-3200 Matched Pair Dual Channel in this board and it worked beautifully, no problems. So yours should work. Write back and maybe we can get it figured out

I'm having problems updating the BIOS.

My K8V SE Deluxe came with 1001 firmware. I've tried updating to 1003 and 1004. But everytime I reboot, I get Bad checksum, please insert floppy or CDROM. It then reads the old bios off of the Asus CD. I've tried clearing CMOS, taking out battery, using the DOS and Windows flasher. The board works fine with 1001 firmware, but it just won't accept a newer firmware!

Any suggestions? Do I need to get a new BIOS chip?

Found out the problem. Stupid motherboard reads of the SPD to determine max speed. My Corsair is one of the early ones made before JEDEC approve pc3200. So I'm stuck at pc2700 speeds. Time to go find some new ram.

Okay, my problem is RAM related too, but this is weird....

2 sticks of Crucial RAM work fine with 1001 firmware. But once I upgrade to 1003 or 1004 firmware, 2 sticks will not work! I can only use one! Guess I'm stuck with using 1001 firmware on this crappy board!!!

Single channel only, but...

According to Crucial, there is no such thing as "dual channel DDR memory". It's all controlled by the on-board memory controller. So if your motherboard supports dual channel, then it turns it on if you use 2 or more sticks.

Actually, the Socket 939 boards support dual channel if I'm not mistaken. I KNOW it works with the FX chips, and I think all A64 Socket 939 chips as well. Coyote raises a good point that with an integrated memory controller dual-channel is kind of a misnomer. I would be interested to take a top of the line socket 754 chip and its equivalent socket 939 and do some memory bandwidth tests. Anyone got such a pair of rigs?

Hey all,

I'm plannig on installing this board soon... I have 2x512MB of PNY PC2700 and 1x512MB of samsung pc2100 in an Epox board right now. In the Epox board 8rda+ they all run a pc2700.

How is the memory detection (by spd?) on the k8v going to handle this? Will it allow me to run them all a pc2700, or will it drop down to pc2100 since one of the sticks is 2100?

Also, how much of a real world improvement will I see if I upgrade to pc3200 from the pc2700? I'm thinking it would be anywhere near 18% since the CPU is static - is it worth selling the 2700 and buying some 3200?

Thx!

PS - Anyone else using PNY on this board? I know it's not on the approved list...

You won't be able to use all 3 sticks. If you read the manual for the K8V, it can only run 3 sticks in like DDR200 or something. I wouldn't mix and match speeds, I tried that and it reported my RAM as like 137Mhz instead of 200Mhz. Just put in the PNY until you can get some better RAM. And yes, I would upgrade to PC-3200. I wouldn't say you have to or that it'll make a big diff, but when you come across a good deal: take it.

Anyone here overclocking the SE Deluxe with a 3200+? I currently got mine at 2.5Ghz 227FSB, 1.55v core. Temps running 40c idle, up to 50c with Prime95 stressed. I'm also using 1001 firmware, and only PC2100 Crucial DDR.

Same error I got when I had Mushkin PC3200 memory installed. With Hynix, no error. I'm trying to get my Mushkin to work as I have 2x512MB of it while only 1x512MB of Hynix .

Did you install the two sticks like the manual says? Apparently, you can't pick just any slots.

Having trouble adding a second sata drive. Im not trying to put them in RAID, just adding it for storage. I hav e a segate sata drive hooked up to sata 1, and hooked up a WD sata drive to Sata 2. I read teh book and it stated that this is on the VIA controller. Anyhow, my syste isnt seeing the drive. The jumper in in nuetral position on the WD, have power to it, and the sata cable is hooked up. Any ideas?
