First off, it sounds like the majority every problem people are having with this board, is USER ERROR. Not Asus fault, not VIAs fault, not anyones fault but themselves. Phreak, I dont know how you are blaming ASUS here. They, nor VIA are not the ones who invented the procedure on installing a SATA drive. It would be that way on any motherboard you were to buy, so I guess when you have to press F6, S, then ENTER on your MSI, you can blame such a complicated, and "sketchy trick" on ASUS!

And how can anyone blame anyone but thereselves for buying unsupported RAM. There are TONS of websites/reviews/tests with RAM compatability. Google.com... Even something as simple as looking at the customer reviews on Newegg for both the RAM and MOBO will get you answers based on what worked for other people.

I knew close to NOTHING about computers before building, and I was able to put this motherboard and my parts together without ANY problem (besides a faulty floppy cable) and I would reccomend this motherboard to anyone.

The SATA install seems to be among the most popular problem. I truly cant imagine an easier way to set it up. If you really cant put the supplied Asus CD in a computer, go into the VIA folder and click "MAKEDISK" it will automatically create a floppy for you (you dont even have to do it yourself!) and then Press the F6 key, followed by a press on the S key, inserting the floppy, and pressing ENTER, I feel bad for you. If you need help, just ask and Ill try to assist you as best I can, but honestly, I cant imagine it being any easier. Use the VIA controller with the VIA drivers, and if you want the PROMISE controller use the PROMISE controller!

SuPrEIVIE, dont buy pc3500 ram. Buy pc3200 unless you are overclocking, which this board unfortunatelly doesent excell well at which is its only downfall.. Dont worry at all, this board is a breeze to set up. Like I said, prior to setting this thing up, I knew NOTHING about computers and this thing is really easy to set up. Super fast, reliable, stays cool with the stock hs/f (30c idle, 40c load averages) and has yet to crash on me. I didnt update any BIOS, or anything. Just installed the drivers from the ASUS cd.

thanks User5 i did plan on overclocking not greatly as this board will not handle due to no agp/pci lock, shouldn't you get the latest updates BIOS etc instead of the one on CD its usally an old one, isn't it generally recommened to get the latest which should turn out more reliable?

thanks for any help

Yeah, I guess you can if you want, but I really didnt have the time to bother with it. Its running perfect as it is, so I guess I have no real need to fix anything.

Hey

Yeah I finally got it to work. had to have both sticks in at slots 1 and 3.

Had to install the *VIA* SATA drivers and not the promise ones in order to get Windows to work with it.

And had to install using a Windows XP CD (booting up from it), rather than using MS dos and /i386/winnt.exe it.

Had to repartition the HD as the first time i got some bad partitions. Hope that helps.

Thus proving my point, everyones problems with this board are mainly user error

Glad to hear it worked. You have to install the VIA drivers if you are plugged into the VIA controller, and if you want to use the Promise controller, you have to use the Promise drivers. I thought that was pretty obvious, and I posted that tons of times.

Dont know why you tried installing that way, rather than just the proper xp cd install to begin with..

But glad to hear it worked. Very happy with this mobo, and I dont feel its right when people try to give it a bad name based on their own user errors.

You were correct, it was my fault for assuming the RAID driver would be the same for both controllers.

However, that still doesn't justify the promise RAID controller now DYING on me - its enabled in the BIOS and the HD is just not recognized in the BIOS or by Windows anymore.

Neither IMO is it justified that DOS recognizes my SATA drive and lets me move files around but Windows doesn't (but that's not Asus' fault, it's Windows!)

My biggest problem however was the screwed partitions once I placed my second memory chip in! That is just SCREWED!

Where do you get the VIA SATA drivers?

From the Asus website, it's the bottom-most link for drivers

I'd send you a link to the site but it doesn't seem to work for me for now. Asus website

Is it the VIA VT6420 (VT8237) SATA RAID Driver Package Version 2.20D WHQL? Thats the only thing I could find with VIA, but its raid drivers, and I only have one hard drive.

Just use the VIARAID makedisk on the Asus CD, and make sure you are plugged into the VIA controller (SATA1) Regard the fact that it has the RAID drivers on there, since it just wont use them. This is the only part in Asus' documentation that I can blame on them. Nowhere in the manual does it mention the installing of a single SATA hard drive, but this is one of the most common problems with this board, and its very easy to find the solution with a quick google search, or a trip to a forum.

And Duke, were you pluged into PRI_SATA when you installed the Promise drivers? And yeah, it is in a way Windows "fault" but thats just how it is. SATA hard drives are just third party devices as it calls them so you have to install them manually. No bigge though. Worth a little bit of extra speed, my freed up IDE cable, and the sexy sata cable

Once you download that package, it's a zip file, there's a folder in there called "Driver Disk" that lets you make a floppy disk with the SATA drivers (non raid).

HOpe that helps.

Cheers

Thanks guys! I got Windows Xp to install with those drivers.
How how do you disable the scan for IDE devices when it starts up (and claims that no BIOs is installed)?

Ok, Ill do that.
I have a few more questions. My modem is in the second or third PCI slot. Should I move it as far away from the videocard as possible? Will it allow shared IRQ assignments seeing as how the fifth PCI slot is shared with several things including the videocard?
Also, is there are a way to check the temp of the videocard. I have a Radeon X800 Pro. Whats a good temp for it?
A final question is why does it show my AGP speed as off on one of the advanced tabs in settings? I tried to switch it to 8X, but it wont let me.

Hi All

I have one very strange problem!

My system rock stable but in one condition: It bust first crash!!!
"What the Hell" most you will think! But it is really a riddle for me!
My system is not always turned on. When I get home I power it up and brose a little, some chat, mail check and so on. Then I start any kind of 3D software: 3D Mark, Some game, ATI Demo, no matter what exactly. After a couple of minutes the system hangs and only RESET helps! After the restart I do the same things: Internet, Games, Benchmarks for hours and hours but everything is fine!!! No hangs no nothing! Everything is OK. But If I turn the system OFF and some time later I power it ON again, the same situation again! Internet, Movies, Word but any 3D App and a system freeze again!!!

The card is Sapphire X800PRO modded to XT PE. The Card is basically an original XT PE with VIVO and 1,6ns RAM. It works fine (except these strange freezes only once after a cold boot)

Any Ideas???

Well, just as a thought make sure you are using the latest VIA 4in1 drivers and the latest official Catalyst drivers. If you are using hacked drivers, there are always chances of instability. If you do both of these things and it still happens, the one thing I can say is that you seriously modded a video card. Having no ill side effects is a beautiful dream.....

Really strange!

Curious if anyone has used the onboard sound and has been able to mute the front mic input. I get echos in Teamspeak when the mic is attached to the front port but not the rear.

Also - if I used a different sound card (ex. Audigy), could I still use the front audio pin-outs on the motherboard? Is anyone else doing this?

Asus isn't the retard you are. In the manual it talks about the difference between those ports, and if you've read most of the 40 pages in the thread you would know that the Promise Controller is what you were hooking those to before. Maybe even loading the VIA drivers for your Promise Controller?

Anyway, sorry to be rude, simple mistake but don't insult the whole company for one "mistake" board. I got this board and 3200+ Newcastle through the AMD EPP Retail Promo and it booted and worked perfectly for me the first time I tried it. I use Buffalo CH5 memory in 1-3 and never had any problems with the memory either. I bet it might work too in *GASP* 1 and TWO!! Anyway, good luck with your system, I'm sure it will smoke!

For those of you thinking of delving into SP2, I just thought that I would let you know that I did a fresh install of XP w/SP2 slipstreamed into the CD and it worked perfectly. No issues with software so far and I'm using all of the latest drivers from VIA, Asus, nVidia, and Creative. If you want to try your hand at slipstreaming SP2 onto a CD, I highly recommend this "guide:"

Good luck to all

Yes, formatted, reinstalled Windows XP on my Raptor with the Via 2.20D sata driver, then SP2'd it right off the bat. I would get weird hangups and then it would get in this infinite loop of starting/crashing explorer.exe. I could tell that because it would show the taskbar then close it, open again, etc....

Maybe we should do PMs, thanks for your help man!

What you need to find out is which controller your SATA drive is hooked up to: Promise or VIA. I never got my board to work with my HDD on the Promise controller, I had to use the VIA. So maybe make sure that is the one it is hooked up to (check the manual for which is which) & disable the other controller. Also, one of the controllers has a BIOS option for running in either RAID mode or IDE mode. I forget which it is, but if you are using that controller make sure it is set to IDE since you only have one drive. From there, you need to have the drivers for your particular controller. You can either use the disc, navigate to the drivers section and in each folder for the controller's drivers and run the MakeDisc utility that will format the disc w/the drivers. Or go online and download the latest controller drivers for each one and run the MakeDisc utility in it (I would download the newer ones). Then of course boot off of the good ol' XP CD and when the blue screen first comes up, follow the instructions & press F6 to load additional drivers. A few minutes later, it will ask you to insert your disk. I would load both controller drivers just to make sure and keep them handy, as you will need them again later. Then follow through with the setup like normal. GL!
