First off, it sounds like the majority every problem people are having with this board, is USER ERROR. Not Asus fault, not VIAs fault, not anyones fault but themselves. Phreak, I dont know how you are blaming ASUS here. They, nor VIA are not the ones who invented the procedure on installing a SATA drive. It would be that way on any motherboard you were to buy, so I guess when you have to press F6, S, then ENTER on your MSI, you can blame such a complicated, and "sketchy trick" on ASUS!
And how can anyone blame anyone but thereselves for buying unsupported RAM. There are TONS of websites/reviews/tests with RAM compatability. Google.com... Even something as simple as looking at the customer reviews on Newegg for both the RAM and MOBO will get you answers based on what worked for other people.
I knew close to NOTHING about computers before building, and I was able to put this motherboard and my parts together without ANY problem (besides a faulty floppy cable) and I would reccomend this motherboard to anyone.
The SATA install seems to be among the most popular problem. I truly cant imagine an easier way to set it up. If you really cant put the supplied Asus CD in a computer, go into the VIA folder and click "MAKEDISK" it will automatically create a floppy for you (you dont even have to do it yourself!) and then Press the F6 key, followed by a press on the S key, inserting the floppy, and pressing ENTER, I feel bad for you. If you need help, just ask and Ill try to assist you as best I can, but honestly, I cant imagine it being any easier. Use the VIA controller with the VIA drivers, and if you want the PROMISE controller use the PROMISE controller!
SuPrEIVIE, dont buy pc3500 ram. Buy pc3200 unless you are overclocking, which this board unfortunatelly doesent excell well at which is its only downfall.. Dont worry at all, this board is a breeze to set up. Like I said, prior to setting this thing up, I knew NOTHING about computers and this thing is really easy to set up. Super fast, reliable, stays cool with the stock hs/f (30c idle, 40c load averages) and has yet to crash on me. I didnt update any BIOS, or anything. Just installed the drivers from the ASUS cd.
