Hi All!

I found the root of the problem with my First boot 3D Hangs!!! The ASUS K8V Deluxe!!!!
I've changed the mobo with a Soltek K8AN2E-GR and the system now is a little faster, NO hangs, and is cheaper! I'll run it a couple of days and then decide which one to keep but the better RAID Controllers, the added Speed, The Flawless work and the Price are sure to win!

I, and I'm almost glad to see I'm not alone in this, am having horrific mobo problems. I'm going through the thread now, but I figured I'd get a head start and post. I'll also warn you and say my PC knowledge is a little sketchy, so if I don't know the proper terminology, please bear with me.

The components that would seem to be in question here:
AMD64 3200+
Asus K8V-SE Deluxe
Samsung 512MB PC3200 DDR400 184PIN OEM (x2)

My computer worked without a hitch for a little less tham a month, then died while I was at work. I came home to see it sitting at the BIOS splash screen. I restarted it, and this time nothing happened. It wouldn't post, no beeping, nothing appeared on the screen. Blank. I discussed this with some local tech support and some friends more computer-literate than I, and was assured it was my processor. I ordered a new one...and it wasn't. So now I'm out the cost of a processor and still have a broken computer.

Anyway, once I got past that, I tried tinkering with it myself. I moved some of the RAM around, and suddenly it booted...sort of. As I said, I had 2 sticks of 512. With both Sticks A and B in, nothing happens. With Stick A in, nothing happens. With Stick B in, it boots up, but brings me to an error page stating
CMOS Checksum Bad
CPU Fan Error

I can see the CPU fan running and I know the heatsink and CPU are installed properly. I tried resetting the CMOS, and that didn't work either. I'm close to just RMAing the damned thing and ordering the MSI, but I'd like to know if there's anything I can try myself first.

Yeah, RMA'ing a stable, trouble free board for the most troublesome boards out is the good idea if you cant even get this one working right.. Come on, all boards have problems. There are always one in a hundred of boards with problems, but most of the time its all user error. Most of the problems with this board in this thread here are all careless user error, and total disregard for any instrucition or direction. For instance all of the people trying to install their SATA drive on the Promise controller with the VIA drivers. It could just sound here like you have a faulty board if out of nowhere it didnt work, and since it worked perfectly from the start.

If you tried both different ram modules and got different results, I would immediately suspect the ram is the problem. Do you know of anyone with compatable ram that you can try? But Im thinking it could be something else here..

Did you get an option to press either F1 or F2 after the Checksum error, and did you do so? Is the keyboard responisve and everything?

The CMOS battery could have lost its power. Sorry to mention it, but there are known viruses that can affect the CMOS settings.

Can you get into the BIOS?

Hi, im new to this forum.
I was trying to find out the source of some low level, noice, similar to a dialing tone of an old fax/modem. It only appers under load, like loading windows, to playing games and 3dmark.
It differs depending on load, so less in cpu test in 3dmark, more with vertex sheder test and so on.

I dont know the exact location of the noise, but it seems to be somewhere close to the socket, most likely from the left side, where the copper coil things are located (round things, with some copper wire on them). And also right under the socket (could be just me, or it really comes from the cpu. It not a fan, because I stoped the cpu fan during the 3dmark test, and the noise continued).

SO I think I will RMA this asus' crap asap, but still maybe some of you guys had a similar problem with a8v se board?

btw the system is rock solid with prime and memtest86+, no problems with 3dmark, no ocing

thx!

My specs:
Antec sonata with s380W TruePower
asus k8v se deluxe v1.12, bios 1004 with TT Venus 7+
2x512 OCZ 3200EL
Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
Maxtor 120gb sata via Promise

You guys who are having problems should also play with the poweer source connector. I had a "Bad checksum error" before with this board and it was because there wasn't enough power goign to my bootable hard drive. Its power connector was split between the hard drive and the DVD-Rom. Try changing the power connector and see if it boots.

hey guys, im still wondering if my Antec 380W is enough for my set up?
I know that it's most likely the board's problem, but still maybe the amd 64 consumes more power then xp like 3200+

because I had NF7-S and 2500+@3200+ v1.7, 80 GB wd, cd-rw + dvd + floppy, same 9800pro and it was working fine for a year with enermax 350w.

HELP!!!!

A wee question....

I'm buying this board this week, and am wondering if my rather old AGP 2x card will work in it. I know the board's AGP 8x, but will it cope with such an old card (will the voltages be sufficiently different)?

The card's an nVidia TNT2 M64. Any ideas?

Tom.

My K8V-SE Deluxe manual tells me only AGP 8x/4x cards are supported, and that 3.3v (2x cards) will not work, nor even fit in the AGP slot. Sorry

What's your PSU and did you try clearing the CMOS?

After managing to kill my old MSI board with a bad flash, I thought it was time to upgrade to an Athlon 64, so I bought some stuff and put them together.

Hardware used:
Athlon 64 3000+
ASUS K8V (non-deluxe)
Viking 512MB DDR PC2100 (266MHz)
Chieftec chassi with the PSU that came with it, 340W thingie
3 Seagate HDDs, sizes 60, 120, 160GB
Radeon 9600 Pro

I decided only to upgrade the motherboard and CPU for now, reusing my old board's memory modules, since I'm a poor little student, and I figured I could upgrade the memory later, when I had the spare cash.

After plugging things together, I booted up the machine and went to the BIOS, put the memory setting to "4:3 DDR266" and a friend told me Turbo mode was spiffy, so use that, and auto on the CPU and whatever. The hardware monitor said the CPU was at 50C, so we turned off the machine and reinstalled the cooler (Zalman 7000B AlCu), this time without the black plastic crap in the way. Turned on the machine again after making sure the cooler was stable, and while monitoring the BIOS Hardware Monitor for to see if the temperature of the CPU was alright (32-33 degrees), the most delightful thing happened:

THE FUDGING MEMORY MODULE CAUGHT FIRE!

I noticed a curious orange glow from the RAM slots, and then I saw a bunch of smoke coming off the DDR-DIMM module, so I shut the computer off as fast as I could, then unplugged the module and checked it out. Very interesting black hole next to the tiny chip at the lower edge of the module, a burn crater so to speak.

I took the motherboard back to the store, and they informed me that "RAM doesn't catch fire" and "that won't be replaced under warranty" and whatever, but I asked them to at least run a failcheck on the goddamn board, in case it was eager to burn another few memory sticks if I were to try again.

Now why the hell did this happen? That stick of memory worked just fine on my old MSI KT7266 Pro2 for about two months before this happened. Brand's called "Viking" and shouldn't be easily flammable.

I'm not exactly impressed with my first encounter with an ASUS product, and after reading this thread, my hopes aren't particularly high for a problemfree future with this stupid card.

I dont know whether to laugh or cry at that story heh..

Terribly sorry to hear that man. Doesent sound like you have much luck with computers lol. What I do know is that if you send a lot of volts to your ram, it can run REALLY hot. I cant imagine how many volts you would have to set to it to literally set the thing on fire. Thats truly unbeliveable. Could that setting with the memory have something to do with it? Im just totally stumped here, hopefully someone can help you out with that. Thats just an incredibly strange occurance. Regardless, how could the motherboard be a culprit? I mean, people do get defective boards now and then, it happens with these complex parts, but something like that is just way too out of the ordinary to a point where if you told Asus that, they would think you are joking.

Good luck!

Not sure what you're asking here, but if it is "Is my PSU good enough," then yes. Most Antec PSU's put out more power than any generic unit. i.e. your 380W Antec would put out more than a generic 430W+. And a good PSU makes all the difference in system stability, so you're fine AFAIK.

thats the problem, looks like it's not enough for my system, but there is a lot of room according to the test, but still this noise is created by some power stabilizators on my board, so again I guess it does not get enough power.
Also if you look at the picture, the power supply, and the summary results are different, twise as low, does it mean that my psu is defective?

I just put together my system and I got no video display. The power, all the fans, all the lights come on... but my monitor blinks green as if it isn't being sent a signal.

ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
AMD 3200+
Radeon 9000 PRO
CORSAIR 512MB 3200
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy LS
Western Digital 80 GB 7200 Ultra ATA/100
19in. SyncMaster 950b

I wasn't sure if it was because my card was the right voltage, but then I looked at my other comp and it only supported 1.5v and the card worked on there.

Help!!! Reading 30+ pages of this forum made me sick... like my avatar. :\~

I'm not familiar with the 9000 Pro, but is it even supported by modern mobo's? I don't believe that older cards (i.e. AGP 1x,2x) are supported on modern mobo's. Anyone confirm this?

It's AGP 4x/2x BUS on the box, and on the ATI website it says the same.

Radeon 9000 PRO --- Universal Connector --- AGP 2.0 --- 3.3V, 1.5V --- 1X, 2X, 4X

"<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ati.com/support/agpchart/agp.html">http://www.ati.com/support/agpchart/agp.html"</a>

The manual says, "Install 1.5V AGP cards on this motherboard! 3.3V AGP cards are not supported on this motherboard"

My other motherboard was 1.5V only, and the card worked on it.

But, it also says, "If installing 9500 or 9700 Pro Series VGA cards, use only the card version PN xxx-xxxxx-30 or later, for optimum performance and overclock stabilty."

So, maybe it doesn't? :\

It should work as for the 9500 or 9700 Pro warning IIRC it may have to do with the earlier batches of those cards while running @ 8X which caused instability with alot of systems based on VIA's chipset in the past.

I'm dumb, I didn't have the memory pushed in all the way... In fact, I'm on my new comp right now! WOOT!!!
