I've been running a k8v deluxe for months now with no major hangups. The only issue I have that I haven't been able to fix is the missing startup/shutdown & logon/logoff windows sounds. All other sounds work fine once bootup is complete. They work on my other systems so I'm thinking it might be a problem with the onboard audio drivers? I notice they are the last thing to load (even after symatec a/v). Anyone else having this issue?

specs:

k8v se deluxe
amd 64 3200+
radeon 9800 aiw
1 gig ddr 400 memory
windows xp pro sp2

First, make sure that the sounds are of course set to play in the Windows Sounds settings. If it is a driver issue, make sure you're using the updated driver. I've not use my integrated sound with SP2, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Yes, I have sounds set in the sound scheme control panel, and it has been that way since I first installed windows on the machine. I first used the soundmax drivers included on the mobo cd, then tried the updated ones from the Asus site, and lastly, tried some beta drivers Asus released to no avail. I guess I'll have to break down and buy a sound card. Probably get better sound anyway with one. Thanks for the response.

It really sounds like a software issue, as your sound card DOES work; it just isn't functional till Windows loads for some reason. The all-powerful re-format usually fixes problems, so you could try that. But yes, the onboard sound blows. Went from that to my Audigy 2 ZS and OMFG was it a big difference. Just playing music was immensely better. Enjoy

Hey guys,
I have a stock K8V (no deluxe or se) and I am unable to get into the Promise controller BIOS. I remember It came up when I first got the mobo installed, but now it doesn't appear, even when I attach new SATA drives to it. Is there a hotkey or something I can press a bootup to get into it?

And, before you ask, I have scoured my system BIOS looking for startup options and verifying that the integrated promise controller is, in fact, enabled. Thanks for the assistance.

Okay, I too have now read through this entire thread. Fortunately, I have not had the majority of the problems mentioned here, but I still have some.

I tried the Windows Flash program and couldn't get anything but a black screen! Fortunately, clearing the CMOS let me get back in. Guess I was lucky. I was able to update the BIOS using the DOS utility.

Now, onto my problem.....my hard drive does the power down during boot up thingy and then powers back up. I tried removing the jumper on my WD160GB drive to run it as a Master/Single, but this didn't fix the problem. In addition, I like to keep my optical drives on separate IDE channels. I guess I'm going to try the IDE 1 to IDE 2 swap, but I don't understand why this would work. Has anyone seen anything official from ASUS or any hard drive manufacturer on this?

I'll post back with my findings about the IDE swap.

UPDATE: Just tried the IDE swap and it seemed to work! Weird! I'll run this for awhile and see how it does.

Hello All,

I wanted to share my problem with this board and see if there were any potential solutions.

I started a thread in general here summarizing it, but quickly:

Flashed Bios to 1004 -- fine
I have a Maxtor 250gb SATA drive, BFG 6800 GT OC, CD-ROm, Floppy, 2x 512mb Mushkin PC3200 RAM, Antec Sonata case, Truepower 380W PSU etc etc.

Basically no matter whether I try the Promise or Via controller the HD never gets detected during boot (preventing me from being able to install windows etc).

I have tried plugging it in SATA1, SATA2, Pri_SATA, Sec_SATA and setting the appropriate bios settings (disable Promise if in SATA1/2, enable Promise + disabling OnChip Bootrom + setting to IDE and not Raid if on Pri_SATA, Sec_SATA).

I also tried using a different SATA cable (2 or 3 different ones), I tried different 4-pin molex connectors from the PSU (this SATA drive takes 4-pin or SATA power connector).

I tried w/o the 6800 GT, and just some old ATI AGP video card.

I am at my wits end. I have already sent for an RMA for the HD, but I have a feeling that may not fix it but who knows.

I just wanted to see what other thoughts were out there..seems like several people had this issue but I didn't see any solution.

Thanks for any help.

You have to load drivers when windows is booting into the setup. As I remember, you have to hit 'f6' when you see then message "press f6 to load scsi or raid drivers". You will have to get the drivers for your harddrive and put them on a floppy to do this. Then windows will "see" the HD and will install. I think these are the drivers you need: http://www.asus.com/support/do..._100104528.zip~zaqwedc

Also a note for others when installing to a Sata drive and using a regular ide drive - don't hook up the ide drive until you've installed windows to your sata, or the installation will be spread across both drives for some unknown quirk.

Hey Capt, thanks for the advice I did do this already, but it always says no HD connected after I go through it. The issue is that no HD is detected even prior to loading windows. The controller it is connected to should recognize that a HD is connected, but it is failing to do so.

I would restore your BIOS settings, since incase something was messed up, you can just do it the correct way and then atleast you will have it working.

...................

*Make a floppy disc with the VIARAID makedisk utility on the Asus disc provided with the motherboard.
*Plug Harddrive into SATA1 and of course the power cable (makin sure)
*When Windows starts to install, and you see the command for PRESS F6, do so a couple of times to make sure. After a little while, it will come up and say that it can not find a harddrive. Press S, and then it will ask for a floppy disc with drivers on it. Pop it in, give it a few secs, and press ENTER.
*Thats it

Hopefully people can use that as a guide who are having trouble with this.

Ive also noticsed the LAN somtimes just dissconnects on its own and recnnects sometimes out of nowhere.
Other wise becides that i love it, i run at 33C on full load

Sounds like a video card issue if it happens periodically and goes away with a reboot. Make sure you are using latest drivers for VC. If that doesn't do it, swap video cards for a bit and see if it still does it. Also check to make sure you are using latest VIA 4in1 drivers. GL & welcome to AT

If you're referring to the integrated NIC, you need to use the one from the Asus website. Look up the K8V SE Deluxe and you'll see the Drivers/Downloads section. Look around there and you should find it. BTW, DON"T use the driver available on Windows Update. I've heard it causes problems.

Yes that is very correct - the Windows Update site with try and plant a new WRONG driver into you every week or so. Don't let it do it or you'll find yourself resetting and repairing your connection every few hours. They aren't even for the onboard NIC, but for the PCI version. They must have the same product code and show up in error.

Has anyone had a problem getting into safe mode? When I restart, and hold F8 to go into safe mode, it lets me choose what boot device I want to boot with, but not if I want to go into safe mode. How do I get around this?

No problems here.
What is happening is you are techincally hitting F8 too soon. If you wait a sec, you'll probly get the Boot Menu. Either way, select your boot device on the boot menu and it SHOULD take you to the boot menu. Also maybe keep hitting F8 after you select your boot device. Its there, you just gotta find it

Thanks effee, F5 worked. Although I didn't try waiting to push F8 like fbrdphreak suggested, I do know that pushing F8 while selecting the boot device does not work.

I have a questions regarding the K8V Deluxe.

I currently have 2 256 Kingston HyperX PC3200 DDR sticks and I want to upgrade to 1 gb of memory. I was hoping I would be able to just buy another stick of 512 memory but looking in the manual, there seems to be no configuration of running 3 dimms at DDR 400

Is this correct?
