I just received 2 300gb seagate sata drives from newegg and here's what im trying to do with my asus k8v se deluxe:

1) set up the 2 new sata drives in raid 1 (mirror)
2) ghost my old primary ide drive to the sata raid array
3) set the sata raid array as my primary boot

But for some reason I cannot get the mobo or windows to even recognize the fact that I've plugged in the sata drives. Both drives spin up, and I can feel the heat, but the mobo doesnt think they're there.

Here's what I've done so far:

- plugged in 1 to sata1 and the other to sata2 (yes power cable connected)
- tried plugging only 1 sata drive into sata1 only
- made sure via sata raid boot is set in bios, then turned it off and on in conjunction with the promise ide raid controller in every combination just to rule that out
- tried different drive power and data cables
- downloaded the via raid driver and installed it in windows
- tried the seagate drive util but it seems to be for ide only

Am I missing something obvious here? The damn drives just dont show up at all! I only want to flash bios as a last resort, so if anyone has been here done this, please let me know what I could be doing wrong.

One thing that I did not see if you mentioned, which RAID controller are you trying to hook it up to? The VIA or Promise? I cannot remember which, but I know that I couldn't get my single SATA drive recognized on one of the controllers, but I could on the other. IIRC, it was the controller that IS on the PCI bus that I could get to work. Try using that one and see if it does it for you. It looks like your methodology is sound. I'm not at my desktop and won't be till Sunday-Monday, so I can't give you detailed BIOS options, but just double-check everything and load it on the other controller.
Also, updating the BIOS isn't a bad idea. Maybe ASUS made the whole SATA/RAID deal easier with a newer BIOS revision, who knows. Write back with more info

Problem resolved, thanks fbrdphreak!

I had no idea there were 2 sets of sata slots (via set and the promise set). I actually had it plugged into the promise set and was trying to get it working with the VIA util haha. I switched over to the VIA slots and now have no problems. Not sure how i overlooked this one, but thanks again to the anandtech forums my headache is gone.

Now on to the ghosting...

hmmm. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't. I'd buy the DFI NF3 LanParty UT 250GB (great for OCing).

DavidK - welcome onboard! (Pun intended) ...

I went from the EXACT same setup (my A7V333 is running a Athlon 2200 w/ Linux FC2 on it now). One place you can go to for good mem recommendations is the occ forum (www.overclockersclub.com). THose guys spend their time building fast machines. Of course, you may get some flaming for running the K8T800 board (k8vse) simply because it doesn't have the agp/pci lock that is so critical to OC'ing this thing.

If it helps, I shut all OC'ing down on this board and simply have very tight (for the crappy ram that it is) timings (2-3-3-6 1T). My video card is OC'd currently, and I am pretty happy w/ the performance. I may be doing a new build in a few weeks and will probably NOT be using this board (MSI or DFI), but will stick w/ the same CPU (as I got a GREAT deal on it).

Anjoy!

Jerome

ps: make sure to upgrade to latest BIOS as there are a few changes in the latest releases.

Thanks fbrdphreak and jerdubois!

I grabbed some OCZ EL PC-3200 that runs at 2-3-2-5. Running stably and well. I can't say that I notice much of a difference over the PC-2700 ValueRam, but I haven't pushed it hard yet. There sure is an improvement over the A7V333!

Hi there, came across this board searching for some help.

I'm thinking of building a computer, and I'm wondering if I'm going to run into any problems in the long run with using this K8V Deluxe, I'm worried about the Ram and Video card the most, I think my processor will run fine...

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
Corsair Value Dual Channel 1024MB PC3200 DDR400
Sapphire Radeon 9600 128MB

Hmm you think I'll run into any problems =)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why not get a newer board? Perhaps something based on the latest chipsets from VIA & nVidia for socket 754 or at this point in time, jump right into socket 939.

First off, I would stay away from the K8V SE Deluxe. Go with a comparable nForce3 board, like the MSI K8N Neo or the Chaintech board. If you're on a budget, choose a slower processor (2800 or 3000+) and get a better graphics card. There is a thread around here that explains the true benefit, but the video card is the place to spend the money if you plan on gaming.
Algere is right tho, S939 is the place to go. I'm sure you can get an S939 board for about the same price as a S754 board, and the CPU isn't much more. IMO, that's the best way to do it. Low-end S939 CPU, reasonable S939 mobo, 1GB dual channel, and like 6600GT for $200. Anything else is a waste of $

Hey Everyone.

I just built a friend a computer using my computers parts. I used the following from my rig.....
ASUS K8V Deluxe SE
AMD Athlon 64 3200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
2x512MB OCZ PC3200 EL PE

He's happy because he's getting a better computer than he can afford otherwise (discounted quite a bit from the used but perfectly fine parts), and I'm getting a better computer for about the same price as I'm charging him for my parts. He doesn't want to overclock at all, so the ASUS K8V Deluxe SE setup is fine for him. I'm getting the following....

DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Winchester)
Leadtek Winfast 6600GT PCI-E
2x512MB OCZ PC3200 Gold VX

I'm getting a great deal and will be overclocking this new setup once my motherboard arrives.

Hi,

I'm new to this thread (but can tell everything about NEC DVD burners). I just installed my Asus K8V SE Deluxe board (beta bios 1006) with an AMD 64 3400+ CPU. Everything is working as it should but when starting the computer it seems to last for hours when it comes to 'auto-detecting USB mass storage devices'. When I push the reset button it will go thru it in seconds, stange!?
What can I do to change this waiting. This already occured with the 1004 & 1005 bios.

Is there an option in the BIOS for USB mass storage devices? If so have you tried configuring it? You may also want to clear CMOS/BIOS via jumper on motherboard to clear out old settings.

In the BIOS there was an option so you could emulate an USB device as a Hard Disk. I disabled this and the PC boots much faster now.
I have 1 external Hard Disk (WD, 120GB), 3 CD/DVD storage boxes (Dacal CD Library II), 1 card reader and a HP PDA cradle.

I've got BIOS 1003 on my K8V Deluxe (not SE). I'm thinking of upgrading the BIOS on it to 1007 in the hopes of correcting a games/rebooting problem I have. I've backed up my current BIOS and d/l'd the 1007. I've looked through many forums and read through many horror stories on this board and upgrading the BIOS. I know there are 2 ways of doing it, via the Live Update (Winflash) and AFUDOS. Which is the easier and least problematic.

Thanks in advance.

Easier: Live Update
Least problematic: AFUDOS

If you've got a floppy and aren't lazy like me, do it thru DOS just to make sure. However, I went from 1001 to 1003 when I had the board and did it via LiveUpdate w/no probs. Just understand you might have to have Asus send you a new BIOS chip

Before I try to flash the bios: Can I go from 1003 directly to 1009? At the ASUS website I see that 1004 & 1005 have alternate instructions to install those versions.

**Please flash BIOS using K8V1004.exe, and do not flash from 1001, 1002 or 1003 to version 1004 through EZFlash/AFUDOS/LiveUpdate**

**Please flash BIOS using K8V1005.exe, and do not flash from 1001, 1002 or 1003 to version 1004 through EZFlash/AFUDOS/LiveUpdate**

Has anyone made that leap or would it be more prudent to take the path of 1003 --> 1004 --> 1005 -->1009?

Like most everyone, I'm trying to avoid any extended down time requesting a new bios chip from ASUS.

Thanx again!

That will definitely be the safe bet. On the other hand, what do the instructions for 1009 say? Those are the instructions I would worry about

I'll try the 3-4-5-9 route then.

After the 1004 & 1005 versions, no special instructions in the download page for the K8V Deluxe were added.

Its a shame ASUS tech support won't reply to my emails and online requests.

Same as updating to 1007 and/or 1008. The usual options to flash via Windows or DOS.

EDIT: Darn! BWinc slipped right in-between the posts
