Alrighty then. I unfortunately had a ton of "honey-dos" tonight. But I was able to get the BIOS updated to 1009. (did the 1003, 1004, 1005, 1009) Fortunately no horror stories here. Everything went smoothly. There was one quirk. I installed 1004, there were no errors, PC booted fine, but when I went to view the version from Asus Update, it showed it as a 1003.027 Version. Si-Sandra showed the bios with some wacked out designation. Oh well *shrug*. As long as I got to where I wanted.

Tomorrow I'll go back on my original problem.

Thanks to all for the help and moral support.

I'm trying to set up RAID 1. My mobo, the K8V SE Deluxe, appears to have an IDE/PATA RAID controller on board. It also appears that there are one or two SATA RAID controllers. Anyway, all I want to do is set up RAID 1 with my two Maxtor IDE/PATA drives. Is that possible? The wording in the mobo manual makes me wonder. It says,

quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These connection options are available for creating a RAID 0 or RAID 1 array: a. connect two Parallel ATA HDDs to primary RAID connector and one Serial ATA HDD to either one of the two serial ATA connectors
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why does it say *and* a serial ATA HDD? Does this mean it doesn't support just PATA RAID?

Also, I'm have a hard time figuring out which of the drivers included on the mobo installation disc I need to install. There's a bunch of different ones on there and none of them is obviously labeled.

Finally, is there anything I need to know about using the MBFastBuild utility? Or are the instructions in the manual pretty accurate? I'm just afraid of accidentally erasing the data on my original hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

The promise controller will allow you to raid 1 PATA along with 1 or 2 SATA drives. It's touted as an upgrade path to allow you to raid your old PATA drive with 1 or 2 new SATA drives. If you want to know more, it's based on their FastTrak controller chip. Take a look at their FastTrack S150 TX2plus (http://www.promise.com/product/datasheet_list_eng.asp?productId=107).

If you go that way, use the Promise drivers.

I'm using the promise raid with 2 SATA drives and it works quite well. I'm told the VIA raid is about equal in performance but I was already using a Promise raid on my system when I upgraded to this MB and was able to move my drives over with the raid arrays intact .

Has anyone found another solution for the mysterious "power up" when hooking an IDE drive to the primary IDE channel? This doesn't make sense to me. Anyone know of drawbacks to running the harddrive on the secondary IDE channel? Any harm to the "power up" problem?

Also, anyone played with the Beta BIOS for the K8VSE Deluxe that came out about a week ago?

Thanks!

Good luck!

I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but when the PC boots up, I can hear the hard drives 'power up', as if a surge of power has hit hard drive. The hard drives work normally when booted up. It works and all, but I'm just worried too much of this will cause damage to hard drive. I was just checking to see if anyone else has this 'issue.' Even when I reboot it does same thing. I've tried other hard drives from other machines and they all do it when plugged into this motherboard. These are IDE hard drives. I have no SATA drives.

I've just started looking into the hardware i'm going to need for building my new pc (first time i've built a system) and this thread caught my eye. I've not had time to read all 50 pages so i apologise if this question has been asked before.
Towards the start of the thread a couple of people reccomend upgrading from PC3200 RAM to something like PC3500 and i was a little confused because according to the specs on Asus' site the mobo takes "3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB un-buffered ECC and non-ECC PC3200/PC2700 / PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory" - there's no mention of memory higher than PC3200 being useable. Does this mean that you can use PC3500 but for whatever reason Asus have failed to list it on their site?

You should be able to use PC3500, but just keep in mind that they're not going to support you running it at that speed. The highest they would support "officially" IS PC3200. You might not have problems overclocking though. Good luck!

All current motherboards (AMD or Intel) support a maximum of PC3200 RAM, meaning your RAM will run at 400MHz. The PC3500, PC3700, PC4000, etc come into play when you OVERCLOCKING the system. At the heart of it, this involves running the memory speed higher. For those who overclock, higher speed ratings on memory allow them to overclock the system and the memory will keep up with everything else. The disadvantage is that in most cases, >PC3200 RAM will not run at low CAS latencies at regular PC3200 speed. For instance, a quality stick of PC3200 might have latencies of 2.5-3-3 or 2-2-2 for the good stuff. If you buy a stick of PC4000, it will probably have a latency of ~3-3-5 or something like that at 400MHz. Thus, if you don't overclock and take advantage of the higher speed capability, you're SLOWING your system down by using the "faster" RAM. Athlon 64 systems are more dependent on memory latency than any other platform, so if you're not overclocking save your money and avoid anything above PC3200.
Hope this helps

From my experience, it is normal to hear what you've described. Depending on your hard drives, the mobo, and how loud your system is, you may or may not hear the little "spin-up" sound when hard drives first come on. If I'm understanding the description correctly, this would be the same sound that one hears when your hard drives go to sleep (via power saver settings) and then you wake them up by doing something on the system. Now, I don't know what to say about the noise disappearing on the secondary IDE channel. Overall, I wouldn't worry about it.
And there is no problem using your drives on the secondary IDE channel. Ideally, you don't want to use two drives that will share lots of data on the same channel. i.e. If you have two hard drives, put them on different channels; same with optical drives.

Is there any way to run 3 sticks of DDR400 at DDR400 speeds? The manual states the speed will drop down to DDR333 when 3 sticks are installed.

Is this a board or CPU limitation? Do the new A64 CPU's have this limitation?

I never tried to do this when I had my K8V, but I do believe it is a limitation of the integrated memory controller in the A64.
I know that with the Newcastle S754 A64's they improved the memory controller, so if you have a Newcastle you've at least got a shot at it.

Looks like a new BIOS came out around the end of April for the K8V SE Deluxe. Up to 1006, I think.

I've just read through all 51 pages of this forum and thought I'd add my comments.

I must be the last person on Earth to buy this motherboard. After all who would buy a 754 socket board now?

Well I did and here is why...
In autumn (fall for US readers) 2004 I bought a bargain Gigabyte KV800 Pro motherboard.
I decided to pair it up with an AMD 3000 CPU, a WD Sata HD and 2 x 512Mb of 3200 RAM.
It all went well and made a very stable PC, until a month ago that is...
All of a sudden my PC started to play up with random freezes. To cut a long story short it was motherboard!
I needed a PC and on the recommendation of my local supplier I went for the Asus K8VSE amnd rebuilt my old PC with the Asus Mb.
Well it works a treat and has been stable as a rock which is more than I can say about the prettier (also had an extra serial port which I'm not bothered about) but less sold Gigabyte.

I also had problems with the promise Sata drivers and couldn't find the VIA ones on the Asus CD (maybe I should have looked harder) so I used the VIA drivers from the Gigabyte board - it worked!
The manuals MUST make this much clearer.

Anyway very happy with this board and the quiet fan works a treat - unlike the Gigabyte using my silent fan.

The BIOS is a bit "messy" and slow but I can live with that.

regards all

I'd start by grabbing a copy of memtest86+ and checking out your RAM. I've had problems with Asus memory slots. I watch it for at least one cycle as a quick test, but run it overnight to be sure. If your memory fails, try other slots. Only one of mine was good (why I gave up on my K8V SE Deluxe -- I wanted more memory. Asus will warrany it, but not cross ship and I can't be without my computer.)

Hey everyone,

I just got a S-ATA 160GB Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 HD back from an RMA, and need to partition/format/install Windows on it.

Trouble is, Windows won't recognize my HD. I boot from the CD, press F6 for 3rd party drivers, put in the floppies (tried both the Promise ATA and RAID), select the appropriate driver, and it lets me Install/Repair Windows.

Then when I press Enter to begin install, it tells me that no HD is detected.

I've tried swapping S-ATA data and power cables in every possible combination, turning the ATA/RAID chipsets on/off in BIOS, remade the floppies using different diskettes; none of these yield any positive results. The HD is successfully detected automatically when I boot up the system, so I don't think there's anything wrong with my hardware.

I've read a good chunk of this mammoth 51 page thread, looked at the FAQ's that some users have helpfully written, and nothing I've tried works. Had this exact problem before when I first set up the system, and did something really quickly to fix it, but can't for the life of me remember what it was. I've never changed any of the hardware in my system, except swapping out my damaged HD for the RMA replacement.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I can not get the board to power up. I plug it in and the power light on the motherboard comes on but no matter what I do I can't get it to turn on. I took everything off, took it out of the case, reseated the cpu and ram, made sure the bios reset jumper was properly placed, nothing I do will turn it on.
Did I get a doa board or am I missing something?

I just bought this stuff all new off Newegg and put it together:

Asus K8V-X Motherboard
AMD Sempron 3000 CPU (Retail)
Corsair 512MB DDR400 Memory
Asus AGP8X 64Mb GeForce4000 Video Card
Antec 400-watt power supply

I plug everything up just as I've done on the countless other computers I have built before, and the green light on the motherboard lights up, but when I turn the power switch on the case to on, nothing happens.

I have tried different memory, different video card, and a different power supply with no fix to this. The fan on top of the CPU doesnt even kick on at all.

Please help! Is this a bad motherboard???
