on chip sata boot rom. Leave enabled if using via sata
onboard promise controller. enable if using disable if not
operating mode. If using promise controller single drive ide mode. Raid setup on the promise then RAID
Onboard LAN. For the onboard LAN disable if not using I got my cable modem plugged in it so it's enabled.
Onboard LAN boot rom disabled. Enable if your booting from a network drive.

You need different drivers for the promise controller depending if your using IDE mode or RAID.
There's promise fastrack 378 raid drivers for raid. Promise SATA378(ATA Mode) if using ide mode.

Tried install with the memory slowed down? Is the drive formatted so clean install?

OK, let me share my experience....

Athlon 64 3000+ (retail)
old ELSA PCI video card
1 stick Geil PC3200, 512mb
TDK combo DVD-CD-RW
LSI U320 SCSI contoller
really old IBM 2.1g SCSI drive (I thought it was a 4...but no)

Assembled w/o issues, booted up with Windows XP 64bit for Athlon BETA.
BIOS: left everything as is, except disabled IDE and SATA controllers.
Booted cleanly off the burned CD in the DVD drive, the OS install went smoothly, and I booted into XP. But. Here's where the problems are:
1. No NIC driver for the onboard gig-port.
2. Found and defined the firewire port as a nic.
3. No video drivers. Well, duh. Expected...I will have a Radeon in a week or two.

#1 is the real problem...w/o nic drivers, there's no point in going any further with this OS.
Hardware: It's all working ok...once I get XP Pro installed, and update all the drivers, then I'll report back.

edit: found a database of 64bit drivers PlanetAMD64

I can't get windows to install. I keep getting the same error that windows can't copy the following files:
processr.sys
nic1394.sys
sonydcam.sys
msh263.drv
ntkrnlpa.exe

I tried using different XP install disks, different hd, different cd drive, different graphics card.

The mobo and cpu are new and I suspect one of them.

rams ok....corsair xms..... tried ide and sata hd .....same exact files not being copied.
I even copied the files to a cdr and it still wouldnt copy them.

If you are using the upper SATA connector then you should enable the on board SATA controller and disable the Promise controller. Are you using dial up or broadband? Do you have a PCI NIC card that you plan on installing? I am using the onboard LAN so I have it enabled. If you are going to use a NIC then you should disable onboard LAN. I would disable onboard LAN boot ROM unless you want your computer to start up everytime you get pinged. As for Operating mode I don't remember. I think I just left it set to default.

Which DIMM slots is your memory installed in? What is the capacity of each stick? Is it double sided or single sided? I would try slots 1 and 3 and lower your memory clock to 333MHz or bump the memory voltage to 2.7V.

See if you can get Windows to load after that. I had many install problems and reboot problems until I started messing with the memory configuration. I am running stable at 400mhz memory clock at 2.7V with 2 512MB sticks in DIMM slots 1 and 3.

Hope this helps. Post back your results.

Make sure you have a good power supply.

Is it possibly that many of you are having RAM problems because you do not have ECC RAM? I realize it said it was compatible with both non-ECC and ECC RAM, but ECC (error checking) would likely have fewer problems, would it not?

I really hope mine turns out alright. I'm custom odering all the parts from my cousin's computer business. They will assemble it and do the burn-in test (actually I'm hopefully going to be able to go in and help assemble the parts). He runs a great business and we bout our last computer from him and the company's customer service was great. Replacing parts without a lot of hassle.

Is there anything I should watch out for when assembling or should I advise them on certain problems they could run into?

Hi people. I have decicded to take the plunge and build my first homemade PC. I want to make this machine an absolute powerhouse so I am generally going for quality components. I am building a PC very similar to that of JulesMaximus. It is going to be:

3400+ Athlon 64
1Gb of Corsair DDR400 Ram (2 x 512mb)
Asus K8V Deluxe board
256mb Ati Radeon 9800XT
etc
etc

Now I have been conducting some research and I am worried that my RAm won't work in this board. I have read about a whole lot of issues arrising. I know nothing about manually setting RAM timings or what they even are or do. In the past I have just plugged ram in and it worked, but I have never used DDR of any type before. I have seen it suggested that you use DIMM slots 1 and 3 for this board. Thats cool, and duely noted. However, if I use slots 1 + 3 will I be able to just plug the ram in and play. Also, does adjusting the RAM times make my computer run slower or at say DDR333. I am spending a lot of money on this machine and I want to make sure I can run it at its peak. There is no way I want to be left running ram at a slower speed than intended or "supposably" supported by this board. As a relative noob to this world please go easy on the technical jargon.

Thanks in advance for any help provided

Hi,

I have recently put together a new system. And it wasn't cheap. $2800 actually.
The specs are:

ASUS K8V DELUXE (updated to latest bios)
AMD 64 3400+ CPU
2gb of CORSAIR XMS DDR RAM (2 x 1gb stiks)

2 x 120gb SATA DIAMONDMAX MAXTOR DRIVES
(using promise controler in IDE mode not a RAID set up, I should note that I would have used them on the IDE ports but they were SATA drives so I had to do it this way.)

ANTEC TRUE 550 PS
COOLERMASTER ATCS CASE w\4 fans
RADEON 9800 XT 256DDR Graphics card.
CREATIVE AUDIGY

My problem is that it takes over 1 minute to boot up. This machine is decked out to the max and when I boot up it sits at the ASUS MOBO LOGO screen for over 30 secs. What in tarnation is it doing?

My gal just bought a COMPAQ system and that thing boots up in seconds I feel cheated. I am sure it is a setting in the bios but I am not sure. I tried to set the TURBO mode but it would hang the sytem at boot so I went to standard. I increased the FSB to 215 abd the sys is stable and really fast. I also set the DDR RAM to limit and DDR 400.

Can anyone tell me what the heck I am doing wrong to get this thing booting faster?

oops...here is the post...

Anyway, try this:

enter bios, go to bios configuration, ENABLE quick boot, DISABLE full screen logo. See if that helps.

Also...go to www.pricewatch.com and check on some prices. My setup is almost identical to yours. My pricetag, however was around $1100, with free shipping on most pieces.

Did you disable the other SATA controller in the BIOS? If both SATA controllers are enabled it will spend no short amount of time looking for a device that isn't there. If you are using the Promise controller you should disable the on chip SATA boot rom.

Ok I need a few clarifications. Cause it feels like im taking crazy pills with all Ive read.

Ive got my Athlon 64 rig running good, i had major problems installing windows at first and it came down to my memory, I had Kingston HyperX 2x512 sticks DDR400 pc3200, which did not work. I spent nearly a week trying everything, I even had my Dad and his buddy over looking at it. We came to the conclusion that the memory wasnt compatible. So I bought some of the Apacer brand 512 sticks that they recommended on the Asus K8v site. No problems what so ever after that.

But I noticed that all of the listed modules on the asus site are not really the fastest. Including the Apacer stuff I got. I looked on the Corsair website and they said the XMS low latency will work for the K8V(model CMX512-3200LL Pro), but Im really skepticle, because if I have to put them in the 2nd and 3rd slot, wont you loose performance?

Ive bought all quality parts and now im stuck using some cheap Apacer crap RAM. I want some fast RAM, that works at FULL performance. So if anyone can shed some light on some good, fast RAM, please share.

Bought my Asus w/ A64 3400+, 1GB Mushkin Lvl2 PC 3500's (2x512).

The system booted without a hitch. My first attempts of installing windows xp (32 bit) failed because I set the bios to use way to aggressive timings for the memory. Relaxed them to more acceptable settings (2-2-2-6), and she's running like a champ!

I'm VERY pleased with my system.

In the BIOS, what Memory settings do you change? Theres seems to be alot of timings that ive never heard of.
Like If I wanted to run 2-2-2-6, which settings do I need to set?

thanks

and also I thought that the k8V only supports up to pc3200? Maybe I didnt read it right, but thats what I thought.

Heres what I got going right now:

Athlon 64 3200+
Asus K8V deluxe
Radeon 9800 Pro
SB Audigy 2 platinum
2 80Gb seagate SATA's in RAID 0
1gig of Apacer DDR400 PC3200 2x512(<---only crap i could get working!!!#$@#$)

So ya, I want better ram, but Im really not sure what to get.

Im benching 19,500 roughly in 3dmark2001se. but I still see people out performing me with the almost exact same set up. Im convinced its my not so good ram.

I picked this board after reading about it in pcstats.com last month. I really enjoyed what i learned and i even installed the board myself. I have never done this before, the lay out is so kool they show you how to connect it and plus it has a default setting for the bio's when u clock it too high, no need to go thru many steps to reconfig it! I had asked around as to the price to install the board and was told from 99 to 125 dollars to install so i saved a bundle by doing it myself....

I would leave it as is. It works and is stable so why change it.
2-Cas Latency 2-TRCD 2-TRP 6-TRAS

Most memory can't run 2-2-2 so try 2-3-2 or 2-3-3

Is anyone having poor performance when encoding a divx video? I'm getting around 15 fps, which is slower than when I had my AMD XP 1900+. My current system is:

AMD 64 3200+ Retail
ASUS K8V w/ 1005 bios update
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
2x 512 Crucial PC3200
Audigy 2 Platinum

I've read a few things saying that the via chipset may be to blaim.. But any information would be helpful

Thanks

This is my system:

Asus K8V DELUXE Mainboard Socket 754
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz
Spire CPU-Fan KestrelKing II S754/940
TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL2.5
Western Digital Raptor 74GB S-ATA 10000RPM
Sapphire Radeon 9800PRO AIW 128MB DDR
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
Creative Inspire 5300
Sony CD-recorde IDE48x/24x/48x/16x Combo
Pioneer DVD-burner IDE DVR-106
Antec Overture desktop case
19" Iiyama Vision Master pro454

Im using the Via controller and I installed XP pro.

I have had some problems with my new system: games (with unreal engine, unreal2k4demo) crashing "general protection faults" and a few BSODs at random times but mainly during games.

I found that changing the ram to 333 from auto in the bios helped stability a lot, but the problems are still lingering.

Anyone know how to make my system more stable?
