I originally used an ATI Radeon 7000 but just read it may not be compatible. But now after seeing this thread I' worried it'll be the same with my new card coming in a day or 2.

Has anyone fixed this no video crap or should I try desperately to exchange for an MSI Neo?

AMD 64 3200+

What's the new card?

Might be the stock AMD heatsink/fan under heavy full load. You could leave one of your case sides off and see/hear for sure if that's the cause.

Is it the same case if you use the VIA controller instead of the Promise?

btw, Im running with one of the stick now..
I get the excat same thing with my brothers asus p4something board.

Try 1 stick in the blue slot and the other one in the third slot(yellow), leaving the middle DIMM slot empty.

Thank you so much for your reply. Well, I guess Antec Sonata is my choice. I just hope that the 380 will hold up with my system.
I haven't decided on how many optical drive. I probably just put 2, 1 dvd and 1 dvdrw,(I was thinking since I got a cdrw on my old computer, I will just put in the case and use that to burn cdrw and just use dvdrw to burn dvd. I thought that may prolong the life of dvdrw.

So, do you think that antec's PS will be able to support my system, and possible future upgrade? Not a huge upgrade like the new mobo/cpu, maybe just a graphic card and here and there. Would the PS enough to do a little OC? HOw about the case, would it be good enough to keep my system cool with a bit OC and upgrade?

Well, the reason with the mobo/cpu is because I got in the AMD deal, that's why. This is my first time ever on AMD system and OC my system. So I am a bit scared as well as excited. That's why so many questions.
Thanks guys.

My asus k8v se deluxe/amd64 3200+ is on it's way. thanks FW. Now I am kinda juggling between other parts. First of all, there's the case/PS. I have one question, Is Antec's truepower better than Thermaltake's power. The reason I am asking this is because I was looking at Antec's Sonata case, which sells like $99, it's a great case with good True380S power. NOw there's Thermaltake's power, which has been quite good. Seems like I can get Thermaltake's power 480 for around 60. The thing is I am thinking of getting a poewr+case around 100. Which would be a better choice, getting a case for like 40ish + 60 (the 480w Thermaltake Power). Or the sonata case, which has is true380 power.
I have neither PSUs but from what I've gathered in the past, Antec is usually the PSU of choice. Although I've heard nothing but good things about the Thermaltakes.

Currently, I am thinking of this following config:
mobo with stock fan.
2X512 PC3200 or PC3500 Ram, maybe mushkin, Crucial, kingston, kingmax, geil (they all seem to be quite good)
Geforce 3 ti200 (the one I got right now), which I am thinking of replacing it in the future depend on the budget.
2 hd
2~3 cdrw/dvd rom/dvdrw
few fans here and there.

Now, I guess that's the basic setup. So which is a better buy? Please consider if I do upgrade my graphic card in the future. Also, I am kinda intrigued by the whole overclock thing, maybe I will do a light trial. Used to just own intel's mobo, so never tried OC. So, please also take this into account, since I know power and case are important with oc.

Thanks for all the reply in advance. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

GEIL hasn't failed me yet & why so many optical drives?

Finally, if you wanna OC your best bet would be to get a motherboard based on the nVidia nForce3 250/Gb or VIA K8T800 Pro chipset. As HocusFocus said, "This board has no locks on the agp or pci" which although doesn't mean the K8V can't OC, it will however make it more difficult.

At stock sure & with a little OC perhaps. As for the case cooling, I can surmise it's efficient enough.

I searched the thread and din't find any info about how many fans could be used on the mobo. I already have one case fan, and would like to add an additional. I would then have the cpu fan/heatsink, the existing case fan, and an additional fan. Would this work, and how many fans can i add to the stock motherboard. Thanks!

the motherboard normally takes only 1 fan for the cpu. some can take fan for north/south bridges. When you ask how many fan it can takes, that all depend on your case, ie how many place can you put fan on it.

I just brought 2 x Muskin Basic Green PC-3200 from NewEgg. One of the reviews mentions it working well with this board. Can anyone confirm this?

it should work. There is no real way of saying whethr it will work or not. i have seem people got it to work and people didn't. Most people do got it to work on their system, so I do assume it should.

Obviously you can put as many fans in a case as your Power Supply will support as long as you drill enough holes in the case and don't mind the sound of a jet landing in you office....

I think the question is how many fan headers are on the board. I'll know tomorrow when mine arrives! WOOT!!!

I have a strange problem with my K8V SE Deluxe mobo (at least I think it is that). I hope this is the right forum to post it.

My ethernet connection is very slow to establish itself. XP loads fast and nice, but my system hangs (everything works except the connection) for sometimes up to 30 sec when it comes to the ethernet (i have a 2Mb ADSL so there is plenty of hole through).

I have upgraded to the latest Maxwell drivers (microsoft update) but that hav'nt taken care of the problem.

I have noticed that the problem sometimes dissapear when I tell some programs to not run on boot, so i have a suspission that the drivers are badly written.

Anybody having the same problem or any suggestion to have I can solve it?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone having problems getting the Marvell GB LAN on the SE Deluxe working? I installed the drivers, but Win XP always says cable is unplugged even though the cable is plugged in. The LAN light on my router also does not turn on. I tried a different cable but it didn't fix the problem. I didn't have any problems with the integrated ethernet on my NF7.

A tip for the "System CPU test failed" guys: try leaving all of your adapter cards unscrewed (AGP and PCI). If the backplate of the CPU heatsink is touching the motherboard tray, it can cause a short which causes this error. I was getting it and then I unscrewed my video card (only card in the system) and everything works perfectly.

Okay, either I'm a noob or I'm having a brain fart...I can't find the overclocking options anywhere in the bios for my K8V (not deluxe). Please tell me that this board supports oc'ing...

Gotensan01 Look under jumperfree configuration.

I'm new to the Forums: Just about finished building my new PC & I have a few questions.

JeanTech Fusion case w 350w PSU
Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 Ghz 1Mb Cache
Asus K8V (can't get the SE or the Deluxe over here) 1.003 Bios
Twinmos DDR-DIMM PC3200 512MB DDR CL2.5 Memory 184-P x 2 (in bank 1 & 3)
Coolermaster KK8-7152A Fan
HP 300c DVD writer (on primary IDE set as CS - set as master in Bios)
Samsung DVD Rom (on primary IDE set as CS- set as Slave in Bios)
Samsung 120Gb U-ATA 133 PATA HD (on secondary IDE channel)
Geforce 2MX (cost me nothing so it'll do till the budget stretches to something modern)

I had problems with random crashes, which I finally put down to Memory settings.

1:- Memory (I know that my memory is probably the cheapest DDR400 known to man) I had to set the memory to DDR 333 to stop the random crashes. I'm running at 2.5-3-3-6 and it seems stable. I have to run at a CAS of 2.5, but any suggestions for the other timings & how to get it to run at DDR 400 speeds?

2:-Is the inability to run at DDR400 speed linked to FSB overclock. I'm running at 205Mhz (not much of an overclock, but I plan to increment it each time I boot & see how far I can get. I reckon that my core ought to be quite happy at 220Mhz) Does this mean that I'm also overclocking my RAM ?

3:- Is there any advantage to putting my PATA HD onto the Promise controller in IDE mode and giving my optical drives a channel each?

4:- Is there any advantage to putting my modem in slot 4 as this is an unshared slot?

5:- Has anyone tried XP 64 on this thing yet?

As for the K8V - No worse than any other rig I've put together.

Great forum BTW.

I would definetly put the pata on the promis controller. My setup is a SATA hd in the asus controller, PATA hd in the promise controller, dvd-rom drive in first ide, and dvd-rw in other ide. Why not have one controller for each device? Just sounds like it'd run more efficiently. The reason that I originally did this was so that on the fly cd/dvd copies were more reliable and so that copying from one hd to another would be faster. Sorry I can't help with anything else...I am also pretty interested in the xp 64 question. Have you checked the os weboards?

In response to the questions about the ethernet reliability, I have had a few issues as well. First off, after coming out of standby, I can only use about .2-.4% of the available gigabit, which doesn't equal squat. It never goes more than that and if I try to transfer a file over the network, it will go so slow and eventually lock it up. So, suspend mode is just about worthless with this board. And this is the second board after the first was RMA'ed, so I don't think I have a special case.

Also, as somebody mentioned earlier, I downloaded the updated driver from Windows Update and it borked the network access and I had to roll back the driver to get access to either the network or the internet again. So, don't do that.

What is your ethernet cable plugged into on the other end? Try setting your speed to that device instead of letting it be automatic (where it has to guess, okay, am I plugged into a 1000 or 100 or 10 Mb switch).

I have noticed that the problem sometimes dissapear when I tell some programs to not run on boot, so i have a suspission that the drivers are badly written.

What programs? Are you sure these other programs aren't causing the problem? What happens if you put in a PCI ethernet card and disable the onboard one?

The only concern I would have doing this is that the onboard IDE might be more efficient/faster than the Promise PATA IDE port. So it might be worth benchmarking to find out.

Finally got the kinks worked out of this, seems 2x 512mb sticks are kinda flaky on the board, and running a limit on my ram makes the system unstable as hell. (I have khx3000 bh5).

My EPP combo is running @ 11x230=2530mhz prime stable (ram is stuck because of the damn divider issue). If I keep the a64 I might buy an nf3 board so I can lock it, or might just go back to a p4. I can't complain too much when I got the board for free though.

BTW, malvescorner.com has a cpu and vdimm mod posted (I did the vdimm mod, have it @ 3.2v right now). My ram runs @ tightest timings posssible prime stable so I'm pretty happy with that. This thread helped a lot thanks everyone.

Well, I was playing a little Farcry today with my new rig and Audigy 2 ZS and noticed the rear speakers and center channel weren't working. So, I tried downloading the software from Creative Labs to configure and test the speakers, but none will install because it can't find the correct hardware. It shows up as Audigy 2 ZS in the system. Also, there appears to be a conflict with IRQ with my TI4200 and the Firewire port on the Audigy. Is this causing an issue or is it something else?

After the past two weeks of a nearly constant flow of problems/conflicts (promise controller doesn't work with Audigy installed, Maxvell ethernet doesn't work after coming out of suspend, Cool N' Quiet doesn't work ever, now this) with this board, I am probably going to try to get rid of it. I gave up on VIA a long time ago for these very reasons and it doesn't look like they have changed. I do like the A64 and hopefully a Nforce 250 GB will work better.

I got This mobo with CPU today (as part of amd promo hot deal) and holy crap - this mobo is most problematic piece of hardware I ever worked with (and I worked at one point with some piece of sh!t appolo no-name mobos with amd k2 ) .

- It didn't boot (blank screen)
- Didnt react to power at all (even fans not working)
- freezed during post
- When it finally booted it f@cked up my 3 year old Win Xp Pro installation during drivers setup .Its says now "\windows\system32\config\system is corrupt" ( and I lost my XP CD ,so I had to find some junk HDD , install win 98 on it and now I am downloading winxp from bittorent, since I can't even copy any data from NTFS drive with stuff I have on my cds)

I got it semi stable by upgrading to new bios and finding the "lucky" memory configuration .I even dont think about optimal settings now (or god forbid overclock)- I just pray it doesnt crash.

On top of it all drivers for this integrated stuff (8 USB ports,2 raid controllers, integrated ethernet ,Audio) are extremly buggy and constantly screwing up under Win98SE- that may be very well win98SE fault ,but I expected after disabling USB ,raid and Audio in Bios not to have problems with it -yet with each OS restart it finds all those "new unknown" raid controllers ,USB and Audio cards.

There is one thing though -hardware monitoring on this board shows 11.7v on my 12v rail . My PSU is powmax 580 W and is working perfectly with my old Epox 8 kha + in the same system. Though Epox doesnthave a 4 pin 12v connection ,while Asus has and requires it . Could it be that my troubles are
mostly caused by PSU and low voltage on 12v rail ( if 11.7 can be considered low) ?

As a rule, when installing new mobo & other big computer components, always do fresh install of XP. About the PSU, 11.7 out of 12 sounds pretty reasonable. If you list the rest of your components in detail, maybe we can figure out if anything specific is giving you trouble.

To all,
Just wanted to chip in that I just got my K8V SE Deluxe running (through an EPP as well) and it is runnin' nice. I had a little confusion setting up the SATA HDD at first, but after that it was smooth sailing. Here is what I am running now and you can see my previous rig in my signature.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (512KB L2 Cache )
Asus K8V SE Deluxe, default settings & BIOS
2x256MB Corsair PC-3200 Matched Pair (TWINX512-3200LLPT)
80GB WD SATA 8MB Cache 7200 RPM (Main)
80GB WD PATA 2MB Cache 7200 RPM (Storage)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Catalyst 4.8)
Plextor 48x24x48(A) CD-RW

And it is smokin!!
