Just a word of caution: BEWARE of updating your BIOS on the K8V using Easyflash! Don't believ on their crap about having a "Crash free BIOS". Last weekend i built a k8V + AMD 64 3000+. Installed Win XP Pro fresh and updated with SP1. Since the manual said that updating the BIOS was a breeze, I decided to give it a shot. Followed the manual and used Easyflash. THE UPDATE FAILED! F***!!!!!! I rebooted the computer and it did not even post it! I could not re-load the BIOS from the CD-Rom. I was really pissed! I thought that a BIOS update was fail proof but it seems that it is not! I had to bring back the computer to the store and they will take the BIOS chip out, flash it and put it back. If it doesn't work I gotta buy a new MB. I think that the old saying is still true: if it ain't broken, don't change it.

plug it into sata 1 the other one (pri_sata) is for raids - and then install the drivers using makedisk before installing xp

My buffalo PC3200 ch-5 chips from newegg work just great on it. 2 512 sticks, double sided, slots 1 & 3!

Just tested the onboard audio compared to an Audigy2 ZS in slot 4. The onboard audio gave me significantly lower framerates than the Audigy2 ZS (w/ latest drivers) did. Also, you get support for more options as well. I would really recommend any audigy card over the onbaord sound, I noticed that mine cracked a lot too...

*weird!

I have twin sticks of 512MB DDR from Crucial in mine, and I'm not having any problems with it. From what I hear, though, your results may vary.

And as an update after a few days, I just wanted to say that my comp is now up and running perfectly, no problems whatsoever. Thanks again. I'm running Far Cry at maxed-out settings, and I'm getting perfectly playable framerates. No slowdowns whatsoever. (Dunno about the specific framerates, since I haven't tried finding out what they are.) I considered updating my bios but since the computer is running fine, and since the bios updates seem to cause problems, I'm not going to try and fix what isn't broken.

finally putting my rig up.
I do run into the problem with geil's memory (value ram pc3200 512mb). When I put the memory into the slot 1 (blue one), my computer will boot but I cann't install windows, windows will load all the drivers but when it restarts and start to install, computer will freeze with error.
I then put the memory on slot 2, then I can install windows fine. Kinda strange
I wonder does anyone has the same problem. Also, I am thinking of adding another ram in the future but if the geil is not working on slot 1, do you guys think I should replace geil's memory for some other brand?

Oh btw, I have another question regarding to this board.

I hook up the sonata's truepower's power fan connector to the mobo's pwrfan but under windows, the program did not detect any power fan's speed at all, is this normal? Or something is wrong with the mobo or power? I did have to kinda squeeze it in a bit as there'a capacitor(or resister) next to the connector on the fan that's blocking it.

Figured with as fussy as this board is supposed to be about memory that I'd end up have to buy something fancy...
but first I thought I'd try my crappy old Simpletech 'generic' 400ddr, and it works just fine. Not trying to OC, but I've had no problems getting the machine up and running and set up as a dual boot w/ XP and Mandrake Linux 10.0 for AMD 64. Mandrake even recognized the onboard NIC and had a driver whereas XP had to have one loaded afterwards.

I did have a weird problem like that but it ended up being the HD I had connected to the secondary IDE slave! I disconnected it and Windows installed correctly. Once installed, I reconnected the drive and Windows detected it and runs fine. Drive is a 160GB Maxtor. Weird.

I have heard that Geil is a problem brand for these boards.

There's your first mistake.

I won't put in an MS SP for a couple months after the _Official_ release. They're usually buggy enough. You actually put in one of their betas and were hoping for a stable machine? What are you? Insane?!

The bios updating hanging was just the icing. Sucks.

Good luck.

yeah. I tried running memtest and it seems that the memory is fine. I return the memory and gotten kingmax (the one in the asus's approved list). Hopefully this one is fine. If not, I guess the board has problem. Never heard of kingmax, hopefully they are good memory.

Can someone help me update the BIOS on this thing? EZ Flash always tries to find K8VSEDX.ROM when the bios name is K8VSEDX.003! I would love it if someone knew how .

Step 1: Forget EZ Flash

Go to bootdisk.com and download 'Dr DOS Disk For Bios Flashing'. Run it to create a bootdisk. Download both the BIOS update (which you have) and the " Afudos BIOS update tool V2.07" unzip and copy them onto the boot floppy you just made.

Reboot, go into your BIOS setup and make sure your PC's BIOS is set to boot from the floppy first, save the BIOS settings, and fire it up. At the DOS prompt type

AFUDOS i/K8VSEDX.003

and you should be on your way. Once you are done, go back and set your boot order back the way it was.

I've never liked those things that update the BIOS from anywhere but DOS.

Whoops, forgot the Nick Burns 'Your WELCOME!'

Can anyone suggest or point me to a reference for what BIOS settings one should use to take advantage of ECC memory? I have it, and I really want to make the most of it. In particular, what should the scrub settings be set to? Many combinations of the ECC options that I have tried through guesswork result in system instability.

This mobo and cpu does not support ecc.

thanks a lot for the info. I was wondering the same thing too. Read so many people have problem with ez flash, makes a bit afraid to flash the bios. Now I know what to do properly. I read that this bios does not fix anything just add support for cpu, may not worth the flash. Anyway, still thanks for the info.

I've had no problems with SP2 RC2 for 6-7 weeks I've been running it on my laptop. It has nothing to do with the BIOS problem. Just noted it so that it was apparent that the system *was* stable enough to do installs for at least an hour.

Now if only Asus would get me my BIOS sometime this year.

sirplayalot: i'm pretty sure that cool n quiet should lower cpu clock speeds during idle use and go up to speed when needed.

my question is this: my cool n quiet software monitor displays my clcok speed at the full 2200mhz even during idle periods. I thought i followed the CnQ intructions carefully because the fan control works fine. Any idea what could be going wrong?
