I had a little trouble getting mine to work at first as well. First, make sure you are using only the CnQ software from Asus' site, not AMD's. I tried to use AMD's CnQ software and it wouldn't work. I did, however, use the Athlon 64 driver for WinXP from AMD's site (I think). I'm pretty sure you have to update the processor driver 'cuz the one Windows uses isn't very up to date. But basically use that software and follow the instructions to the letter and it should work fine. And of course leave the Asus CnQ program running in the background. Here's a couple things to double-check:

(1) Enable CnQ in BIOS
(2) Enable ACPI 2.0 Support in BIOS
(3) Install driver & software
(4) Change Windows power management to "Minimal Power Management"
(5) Run CnQ program

For some reason, mine runs @ 1Ghz instead of 800Mhz; but it still works

I do believe that in order to get C&Q to work, you also have to upgrace bios to 1003.

A word of warning. Use AFUDOS.exe to update your bios. Don't use ezflash as many people have reported that ruined their bios chip. Follow asus's web's step or the manual as to how to flash use afudos.

BTW, for those who got the C&Q, does it looks funny that your cpu is cooler than the mobo? My CPU is around 33 during light use while the mobo is around 37. Is this right?

He he, same here. With a little more than "light use," I'm @ 39 CPU & 41 mobo. Interesting indeed..............gotta love AMD!!!

I am having fun with this combo so far. Gotta figure out where everything needs to be set. CoD looks fantastic though

1003 is for the se deluxe. If you got the k8v only, then it's 1007. I have read few people have problems with the program, lots more people have problems with "ez update", so the best choice would be using afudos. So far, not many people have problem with it except that you have to clear cmos after update.

I have some issues with my new combo.

I moved from an a7n8x ans 3200 to the k8v and a a64 3400+.

My system is watercooled, everything was fine on the old system, everything oc'd just fine.

My ram is corsair xms 3500, and I had no issues on the old system.

On this one however, most of the time with the corsair, it won't even post. It takes a reseating of the stick to get video back, and then it freezes just into xp setup.

Switching to some cheap kingston ram fairs better, getting me past the raid driver disk screen, right to Setup is Starting Windows - then it hangs. Using a few various other cheap sticks gets results in between, with hangs at the CDROM boot screen, or just into setup.

I cannot locate any screen for usin the Promise controller, also. In the bios under 1001 which it shipped with, under avdanvedm onboard, it had enable promise and enable promise boot - that's it. I updated to 1003, and now there is only enable promise, that's it. Nothing about ide mode, and I have no where to get into fastrack.

help!

Do I need different ram? If so I purchase through www.mwave.com and www.newegg.com - and need 1GB total - which sticks are the most reliable for best performance with this board?

What's up with the Promise controller screens?

All bios settings are default/auto.

I have a problem with K8V SE DX and PC2700 memory. I have Kingston HyperX and ValueRAM PC2700 memory, but they both detect as 157.5MHz in CPUZ and Sandra, even though I set it to 5:3 and 2:1. I also tried them separately and in different slots. I tried to set the HTT to 200MHz and set all the memory options to Auto. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Specs:
A64 3200+
512MB HyperX/ 256MB Value
300W Fortron PSU
MSI 9800Pro 128MB
I just have 1 HD and DVD hooked up now.

Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I did a search with no luck. How is the onboard sound with this board? I just got it and was wondering whether to use it or transfer my old Soundblaster live card to it. Thanks!

Hmmm.........quite a conundrum. It does SEEM RAM related, but with random lockups it could also be related to temperature or power supply. If you OC'd an AXP system before, I don't see why this RAM/PSU wouldn't work for the A64. I went from an AXP 2500+ OC'D to 3200+ myself and I was able to use my same PC-3200 Corsair XMS & the 430W Antec TruPower. I would check your processor temps, 'cuz if it gets too hot it could lock up. Otherwise trying some diff mem couldn't hurt.
Check out this link to see what some good mem modules are:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040602/memory_modules-09.html
But performance wise, from what I've read the OCZ either Enhanced Latency or Enhanced Bandwidth are the some of the best performers in the A64 boards.
Get some troubleshooting done (swap some more mem, PSU, check CPU, etc) and get back to us.

This board just might not like that memory. Is the HyperX PC-2700 as well? I've heard of limited success with PC-2700 modules with this board. You REALLY want at least PC-3200. I know the Kingston HyperX PC-3500 & PC-4000 modules work well, but I wouldn't trust any 2700.

The onboard sound does blow. Here is what I would do to decide: Run a benchmark program like 3DMark03 and look at the FPS difference with & without sound (as 03 runs tests both ways). If its a big diff, then there's your answer. On my system, I saw about a 10fps drop. Then play a couple games and listen to some music (if you do that on your PC). Make a judgement call on the sound quality & performance, but I would say use the SB Live.

I am using the same kingston ram from Newegg.com and haven't issues per se with the ram. Although, like others, I have had to reseat the ram in order to get the video feed back but I don't think that is RAM related since I tried various different chips and this is my second motherboard. I think it is just one of those things that we need to live with since we have a Via chipset.

Also, I am still not able to boot up with the promise controller active with my Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS card. I have posted before and it doesn't seem like many people use this combo, but reply if you are using it and your results. Thanks in advance.

Interesting, i've had that video problem twice on my board. Always thought it was my video card, not my ram. Im currently using 256x2 Crucial PC2100.

Turned on the computer, nothing came up (although the system would post), and the voice warning mentioned my video card. Reseating my Radeon 9700 w/Artic Silent rev. 3 always did the trick.

I've searched around quite a bit and couldn't find much. Has anyone had problems with their a8v and fx-53 just totally freezing up no matter what you do? I can be in the bios itself and wait a few minutes and everything freezes solid.

I've done extensive testing including swapping out the PSU, swapping out the vid card, unplugging my sound card, extra case fans (I have a water cooling setup), unplugged the hard drive fans. I've disabled practically everything in the bios also flashed to 1006 version. I've tried all sorts of different voltage settings.

It doesn't look like a heat problem, the bios temp readings say 34c. Also I can be idle and freeze within 3 minutes or play ut2k4 for 40 minutes sometimes and then freezes. Its totally random.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Also, do you think it would be a prob with the motherboard or the processor?

Thanks!

Jonny,

I had exactly this problem - insert an Audigy LS card into any PCI slot and the system does not recognise the SATA array. After a lot of mucking around I simply rebuilt Windows XP Home with the soundcard already in and have had no problem since. It therefore seems that the issue is that the order in which Windows XP loads in the Promise array controller is incorrect, with the soundcard resources taking precedence. If you rebuild with all the hardware in place XP determines the correct order.

This is the only way I found of getting around the problem (NB I also disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS but I am not sure this impacted the problem).

Did you try to swap out the memory? Is your memory listed approved on the A8V page?

I'm having problems to setup a SATA hard drive as an IDE. I am using the Promise interface, but I cannot find the option in my BIOS to change from Raid to IDE. Where is it? The onyl thing that I can do is to Enable the Promise chip.
My Win XP never detects the SATA hard drive. I've installed the Promise SATA IDE driver but XP says that it cannot start the hardware. Any ideas?

I checked, my memory on the asus page and it isn't one of the qualified ones. I have OCZ 3200 memory. The weird thing is last night I ran memtest86 and it went for 11 hrs and 43 min, did 40 passes. Right now I increased CAS to 3 just to see if it'll be any better. I figure there's a good chance its a memory issue, cause I've read other posts about the a8v being picky with memory.
