This is correct. This board does not support 3 sticks of RAM running @ DDR400. And I think someone earlier in the thread tried this without reading the manual and smoked their board. So I wouldn't do it....

My K8V SE has been running fine, with the following components:

amd64 2800+
1x pc2700 512mb Kingston valueram (slot 1)
1x pc3200 512mb Crucial valueram (slot 3)
ATI 9800pro
Maxtor 80gb 7200 rpm PATA drive
SB Audigy2 platinum
Pioneer dvr-108 dvd writer

I have windows XP installed, with all updates up to just before SP2.

I tried to install a Samsung 160gb SATA drive-- I enabled the promise and sata bootrom in the bios, and downloaded and tried to load the promise378 drivers in windows, but the drive doesn't get recognized and I keep getting error code 10 (controller could not start). I have the drive plugged into pri_sata, and I can hear the drive spin up when I put my ear to it, but ..I can't get this installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance.

Solution has been found-- I hadn't changed the raid --> IDE setting in the bios.

We really need more information on your setup and what exactly you are doing to narrow down the problem. Please include full system specs, whether your HDD is IDE or SATA, etc. My first guess is that you are trying to hook up one or more of your drives to the wrong port: i.e. a RAID port when the BIOS is set to RAID & not IDE. Please post what your BIOS settings are for your drive/boot settings and what ports your HDD(s) and optical drives are hooked up to.

I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but when the PC boots up, I can hear the hard drives 'power up', as if a surge of power has hit hard drive. The hard drives work normally when booted up. It works and all, but I'm just worried too much of this will cause damage to hard drive. I was just checking to see if anyone else has this 'issue.' Even when I reboot it does same thing. I've tried other hard drives from other machines and they all do it when plugged into this motherboard. These are IDE hard drives. I have no SATA drives.

Only solution I found (from searching through this thread) was to hook up the IDE drive to the secondary IDE channel. Doesn't make sense to me, as I've never had this problem on any other board, but it seems to run fine with this, and I don't get the 'power up' that you describe.

Good luck!

Hi, i stumbeld upon this thread through a google search.

When i first built my system about 9 months ago i used a WD ATA IDE drive as my primary and only drive, and had XP installed on it. Now, i recently purchased 2 Seagate Baracudda SATA drives, and am running them on the Promise controller in RAID0. I de-attached the WD so my computer would not boot into the OS, and then proceded to install XP on my new RAID0 array. Everything went fine, but now here is my problem. I re-connect the WD and the computer keeps booting the XP install on my WD, not the install on my RAID0 array. I have tried disabeling recognization of the WD drive and that doesnt help,it causes the BIOS to not find any OS to load. I tried taking the drive out of the boot sequence, but that didnt work either. Basically, i tried a lot of things with the BIOS and nothing seemed to work. The only way to run the OS on the RAID is to unplug my IDE drivee. SO my question is how do i set my RAID0 array as the primary boot device? Is this possible? Or do i need some type of boot loader like GRUB or LILO(or something similair). What if i reformatted my WD so that it no longer had the OS install, would the BIOS then kick control to the RAID array? Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: here are my system specs if anyone cares

Athlon64 3200+
Corsair XMS DDR400 (slot 1&2)
Thermaltake 480W PS
ATI AIW Radeon 9800
WD 120GB(Primary IDE)
MSI DVD R/RW(secondary IDE)
2 Seagate 200GB Barracuda 7200.7 SATA - on Promise controller, in RAID0

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm not at my desktop right now, but I believe it goes something like this:
In the BIOS, go under the "Boot" menu. Select "Boot Device Priority." Make sure this points to the Promise controller. That should take care of it. It sounds like the BIOS just wants to look on the IDE channel for the boot device and you gotta bitch slap it into place.

I actually just figured this out, and now i have it working properly. I thought i had tried everything, but in a rush i must have missed this.

For anyone else who has a similair problem, this is what i did:

go into the BIOS
go to the BOOT menu
go to the sub menu Hard Disk Drives
in this menu disable your IDE drive, and only have your RAID array enabeld(mine was caled FT TX Ary1)
then go to Boot Device Priority and make sure your RAID array is included in the boot-up, it doesnt matter what slot.

With these settings i now boot to the OS on my RAID array and once in windows have access to my IDE drive(this way i can backup files and such).

On a totaly different note, it seems like a lot of people described having issues with this motherboard, i have had virtually zero problems, the thing runs flawless for me.

guys, i could'nt really reads through all the 46 pages so I donno if anyones has had this/these weird problem
got my new comp two days ago (configs in my sig)...and well everything worked fine for more than 20hrs continously(lotsa switch offs, ons, restarts - boots < 30secs) but this morning I switched off the comp for about 20mins and then when it came back on..

1) it couldnt detect the HD.. nor could it load the OS.. rescue disk.. reinstalling winxp(even with raid drivers) nothing worked..
I got frustrated and switched off the comp.. mystreriously it worked fine after 30mins...loading xp and everything

2)then at noon I OC'ed it to 2.150ghz and it worked fine...pushed it to 2.2ghz and it started acting weird
..pushed it back to stock at 2ghz >>> still acting weird(boot taking > 1.5minute..otherwise less than 30secs)
Then I reset the bios.. but no effect..
Then I flashed the bios(to the latest revision 1004).. same problem.. very slow bootups with the exact same/previous/new settings and no OC'ing..

3) Then came another problem the comp refused to switch on... it the lights and fans would go on for an instant(when i pressed the power button) but would die out(however the led on the k8v mobo remained lit all the while).. the comp would switch on after a few tries...and then it would be quite fast..

Earlier the PSU(codegen 400watt) use to give 11.7 on the 12 Vline at idle and 11.5 during encoding/gaming..so i thought it was the problem and tested it on my p3 comp..worked fine.. cant use the p3 psu on the k8v as it doesnt have the 12V ATX connector....

Now the problem has become so much more severe..and the comp started off after I tired continously for more than an hour ( have a sore finger now)
Could somebody give me an idea if the problem is related to the mobo or is it the hdd or the psu.. Too many unrelated vague errors makes me think about the mobo.. but then again I cant expect too much out of a Codegen PSU...
What do I do.. someone help

I'm running..
1X80mm fan external
CPU Fan
PSU Fan
Coolermaster 60mm on Riva TNT2
CD Writer
DVD-ROM
160GB SATA Harddisk
Doesnt seem like much for a *400Watt* PSU...
So whats the problem..

Also my HDD's running very hot(no errors, bad sectors on scandisk), I'm not able to see the temp. or the SMART status.. Lotsa problems. cant afford to switch off my comp ..anyone?

Hi

I'm using two 512Mb sticks of Kingston HyperX PC3200 with my Asus K8V Deluxe, but my pc doesn't boot at 2:1 FSBDR ratio with 200MHz FSB. I've tried lowering the latencies from 2-2-2-6 to 3-3-3-6 with no positive results. 5:3 (333MHz) boots fine (and works all the way) and so far I've increased the FSB to 210MHz succesfully with the mem sticks running at 350MHz and 2-2-2-6.

Is there some way to get it running at 2:1 (DDR400)? If not, how much more can I push the FSB without having problems with AGP and PCI buses? I'm using a Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu (copper) for cooling.

Other than the powering down hard drive problem, which was resolved by information in this thread (thanks everyone!), I haven't really had any problems with this board...until now!

Actually, this happened one other time too, but here goes: This morning I turned on my PC and didn't pay attention to any of the messages on boot up, as everything has been working fine. Then, I received a message saying something about the video card needing to have the power cable plugged in. It was a red message box with white text (Sapphire 9800 Pro 128meg card).

The last time I got this, I somehow thought maybe the power cord was loose, so I actually unplugged the cord and plugged it in again. Everything was fine the last time. However, this time, I said to myself that there was no way that the cord could have come loose. I decided to just do a warm boot.

After it came back up, I received a message saying "Overclocking failed"!?!? Of course, I hadn't done any overclocking. It allowed me to press one of the function keys to get into the BIOS. I went ahead and exited without changes and proceeded to boot up without any problems.

However, things kind of ran slow after this. After about a half hour, I decided to do another warm boot. Now, everything seems fine.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Specs below:

K8VSE Deluxe, latest BIOS from 8/5/2004
Athlon 64 3200+
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128meg
Western Digital IDE 160gig hard drive
Two 512MB sticks of Kingston Value Ram (from the ASUS approved list)
Antec 350W power supply

Thanks!

Perhaps your PSU or power line was flakey @ the time of incident to which did not supply sufficient power to your 9800 Pro? BTW is the 4-pin molex power cable split between your 9800 Pro and another device or is the molex power cable fed directly from the PSU into your video card?

Which power cord would this be? The one that connects to the PSU from the rear of your computer or the one that connects directly into the video card?

I get that too when I mess around with the settings or when the [BIOS/CMOS] settings are unintentionally changed. I've never had much to worry about concerning that message and a good reset of the BIOS/CMOS fixes it for me.

Not a clue, Why not try benching/torture testing your system with runs of 3DMark, Prime95, and whatnot to find out if it's a hardware issue.

Ah, good questions! I will have to take a look at the power cable routing from the power supply to the video card. I have run both 3Dmark03 and 3Dmark05 without any problems. Haven't tried Prime95 yet though.

Thanks for the reply!

Sorry Im a lazy A$$....

I have a question about tweaking the bios on this motherboard.

Im currently running Windows XP Pro (SP1) on the K8V SE Deluxe Mobo....
I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+
512mb Kingston Hyper-X PC4000 Memory
and a cheesy PNY nVidia GeFroce4 Ti4600 (Not yet overclocked)

now...question is...what can i optimize in the bios to get the best performance? Im sure someone posted something here about that but i really dont want to sift through these damn posts...a lot of em you know...I was hoping someone knew anything about the memory bios settings and all that...ive been looking around for a while...

Thank you...

Hi

This proberbly have been answered before but i will try anyway.

I have a Maxtor 7Y250PO drive. It is a standard 250 GB IDE UDMA 133 drive. I have planned to by another similar drive.

My question is: Can i make an RAID 1 array on the promise controller with theese to drives? The manual is a little unclear on this subject.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can. I should say I'm like 99% sure anyway. Although not well documented, the Promise controller seems to be quite flexible.

Do note though, that you'll lose all data currently on your Maxtor when you build the array.

During POST, I get the error "No drive attached to the fastrak controller, the BIOS is not installed" and keeps repeating, I know its only a warning, but I dont know how to take it off....

Checked all over the bios in order to fix it, but with no luck!!! I've checked online and da asus site, but it does really explain what to do...

I also update the bios using afudos, but i still get the same errors....I disabled promise controller and it still didnt work....I enabled promise controller to IDE and I plugged the IDE drive in the primary RAID and it still gives me an DISK ERROR, even though it searched for the drive and it found it....any suggestions will be helpful..thanks in advance

Another unusual problem...

I have DVD rom and a hard drive on IDE 1
2 hard drives on IDE 2
My sound maxes out at a very low volume and is not adjustable
When I connect my HighPoint PCI IDE card, so i can add additional hartd drives, the computer will not boot .. it thinks that I am overclocking..

When I remove my DVD from IDE 1 and install a fourth hard drive in its place the sound is adjustable, but my computer still will not boot with the HighPoint PCI IDE card.

any ideas?
