@Diocles - yeah, the M2N-E's documentation is wrong on POST error beeps.

@natrlhy - Sometimes the test will crash my box, too... I'd try it again - if it fails, it should give an error message, not crash your system.

For everyone - messing with your PCIe bus is not a good idea because the SATA bus is linked to the PCIe bus. Raising the PCIe buse will, in turn raise and desynchronise the SATA bus and FUBAR disk I/O. That being said, from what I understand, ATi gfx cards run at 105 MHz PCIe and Nvidia cards run at 100 MHz PCIe bus (I'm not absolutely certain...) So, a few MHz shouldn't be a problem, but since there's really no practical advantage to messing with it, I think it's best to leave it alone.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. I live in Toronto, Canada and I recently bought a new computer from Canada Computers. They built the computer for me. I have no problems with this computer. I have not encountered any problems that were posted in this forum regarding the mobo. I have two question though. Do I need to update the BIOS to 0302 (if i remember correctly)? And the ASUS Music Alarm doesn't work...Does anyone's Music Alarm work? I don't have a floppy drive and I'm using the original mobo's original BIOS which is 0103 (i think). Once again, I have not encountered any problems with this computer unless they were fixded while Canada Computers was building it for me even though the OS wasn't installed during that time. Thanks for everything.

AMD 64 X-2 3800+ 2GHZ
ASUS M2N-E
Kingston ValueRAM DDR2-667 512MB PC2-5300
ATI X800XL 256GDDR3
WD 250GB Hard Drive with 16MB Buffer

My computer is fully stock with no overclocks.

Hi, I'm new too. I decided to get the Asus for my first ever build, and have spend the last month wondering what I've done wrong, until I came across this thread. Ah well, I'm going to try updating the bios and see if that works. Just a quick question, since I've never done this before. Do I have to flash the bios with each upgrade (0302, 0402 etc) in turn? Or do I simply install the latest version, and that has all of the fixes from the previous versions included?

And could anyone tell me what voltage Corsair Value Select RAM runs at? I've got two sticks of 1GB PC5300.

Anyway, I'll just put my system up here, just in case anyone notices any other potential problems I might come across with this board.

Stupid Asus motherboard
Athlon 64X2 4200+
2 x 1GB PC5300 DDR2 Corsair Value Select RAM
Asus Extreme 7300GS 256MB DDR2 Graphics
2 x Samsung SP120 250GB SATA2 Hard Drives (Raid 0 Array)
Samsung DVD-ROM + Samsung DVD-RW
Antec Truepower II 480W PSU

I don't intend to overclock, but I would like to do video editing at some point, so stability is an issue.

ETA: I'm attempting to install XP x64 edition

Im with stupid - All you have to do is flash it with the latest BIOS, patches from the earlier revisions are included. I believe corsair value select runs at 1.8V, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem with voltage.

Also, curious question for you, but what video editing software will you be using? I'm not aware of too many video editing apps that run on XP x64.

I'm thinking of Avid Liquid edition at the moment, because I learned on Pinnacle Fast Studio, which is the one that came just before Pinnacle Liquid Edition (which was bought by Avid, obviously). And it would hopefully share some things in common with more advanced Avid packages if I need to upgrade in the future. But whatever I get, it won't be for a while yet, so it's not a huge issue at the moment, and I assume that they'll support it eventually, if they don't at the moment. But as I understand it, most existing programmes will install and run without an issue. And I've seen a website that claims that Adobe Premiere runs fine on it. And I can always get my hands on a regular version of XP Pro if needs be.

Oh, and thanks for the answer by the way.

Reading that thread you linked to I noticed something everyone had in common - they were all using WD drives. Is there anyone that's using another brand of HDD and running into the same problems?

An interim fix for RAID0 + M2N-E + WDC drives:

1) Follow these directions Integration of nVRaid drivers

2) If you have two WD drives in RAID 0, do not use the second SATA port on the MB. It will start to work and then it will degrade and/or you will not have a successful install of Windows. Use the third port (or higher - haven't tested), create a new RAID 0 array.

3) Consider disabling "tagged queuing" in the SCSI properties of the stripe in device mgr after installing Windows.

Okay I've upgraded to the 0402 version of the bios, and it still crashes in a wide variety of ways during installation, including blue screens, claims of missing files, and just restarting. I've had an engineer confirm that all of the other components are in working order, and that the same problems occur during installation of XP Pro 32 bit, and when just one hard drive is installed. I'm pretty much gonna cut my losses and buy something by Abit instead, unless anyone has any other ideas?

Oh and quick question, how do I get my processor back out again without cutting my fingers off. The heatsink's held in place by this metal clip thing, and I can't for the life of me prise it off the motherboard. Is there any tool I can use without damaging the motherboard (not that I'm that bothered about that at the moment).

Oh, and this is the new motherboard I'm thinking about. It doesn't mention my memory in the compatibility tests section. Does that mean it's not compatible, or just that they haven't tested it? Because there isn't much on that list anyway. Will if work with my system?

ImWithStupid - Each time you 'update' the BIOS, you completely delete the old BIOS ROM and write a new BIOS ROm, so you don't have to update sequentially. The question of memory compatibility is more a question of 'can this mobo deliver enough voltage to my memory?' than anything else. I would check to make sure your RAM runs at 1.8v like overclockedpc said - other than that, good luck with your next build!

geokilla - You can use a flash drive to update your BIOS. Just copy the BIOS ROM onto the flash drive, plug it in, reboot, get into your BIOS, and use the EZ Flash Utility.

Thanks a lot but I have two more questions. =) Once I update my BIOS do I need to change my BIOS settings or would everything be at deafult. Also, if there's no problems with my computer is it recommended for me to update my BIOS cus my dad says that if I change the BIOS settings/update it, there's a chance that I may screw up the computer instead. If the worse does happen is my motherboard gone? I'm just 14 so yep...=) Thank you for your help.ANIME FAN!! =)

I've just built a system using the following parts

M2N-E (bios rev 1.01)
Corsair Twin2X2048 6400
Athlon X2 64 4200
Antec HE 500 PSU
MSI 7900gto

When I turn the system on, the fans spin for less then a second and the machine turns off. No beeps, nothing. I then have to disconnect the power chord and re-connect to test again.
I've tried clearing the cmos, using only one dimm and no dimms. They all have the same effect.
Any help would be appreciated.

1) check all the connection .. whether you connect all the cable or plugs to your MB are correct. especially the one you connected to your on/off button ( hope you know wat i mean)
2) check the compatibily of your RAM with this MB.
3) update the bios.

I should have notice this thread before i getting this MB. BTW i just got it yesterday .. and the come with it bios is the 0304. The soft reset problem is very irritating .. but i got it fixed by updating the bios to 0402.

now benching for 277x9 with (max vcore and max vdimm) with (400ddr) 4-4-4-12-1T.
unfortunately my ram is holding me back ... may be i should put it the low Vdimm option limit my chip go further.

spec.

am2 3000+
Geil 512x2/533 value ram.
topower 500w

my advice.. those who intend to OC with this MB .. stay away ...

new problems...

i love the q-fan feature because it makes my computer absolutely silent. (thx to cool n quiet for that too). i can tell you that the feature works very well, it slows down the cpu cooler to 1300rpm when needed. the system is always very cool. but lately the bios gives me a warning @startup and says: "warning cpu fan speed too low or failed"

i said what the hell... the q-fan option never lowers fan speed under 1300 rpm, and the warning in the bios is set to 800rpm. so i looked after a bit. with q-fan enabled my bios rarely seems to be unable to correctly measure the rpm. i entered the bios and the rpm was fluctuating between 0 and ~45000 which is of course absolutely impossible. meantime the cpu cooler worked very stable judged by eyes. so i guess the bios caught the 0 rpm when checking cpu fan and thought its wrong or too slow. but measuring it from windows with everest its around ~1300 fine.

i could disable this fan-speed warning message, but what if the cpu fan really goes wrong? have any of you experienced such problems? is there a solution?

Hi, i'm new to these forums as well. I just have a few questions about this motherboard. I purchased it less than a week ago from newegg.com and its Rev. 1.01G. Now can you always match up the bios version with the Rev version? Also, can I use EZ-Flash from windows to flash the bios to any version from any version? I will also be purchase an AMD 3800+, corsair 2x1GB DDR2800, and XFX 7900GT. Can I overclock my processor 2.7GHz(225x12) without any problems? Thanks!!!

Hello,

I have bought a M2N-E motherboard and installed with difficulties the following pieces:
M2N-E with bios updated to 0402 - no o/c at all
AMD 3800 X2 64
Asus E AX800 128 mo
512 mo / 5300
HDD (boot) on IDE - jumper as master
CD RW on IDE - jumper slave
HDD on sata 1 - jumper as master
DVD on sata 2 - jumper as master
no FD (disabled in BIOS)

XP32- SP2
with motherboard and graphic card drivers installed

I had some trouble to install it. FD was on on BIOS but no drive installed => no boot. solved
Troubles with jumpers slave/master on hdd, CD, dvd. solved

The installation of xp + SP2 went smoothly. No connection to net during installation and nothing particular installed.
My problem is now with the graphic card. I tested with 3dmark and I got 1 or 2 FPS...

Do you believe it is related to some bios settings? Which bios settings would you advise?
Or other tests?
thanks!!!!

first updated bios to 403, no help still same, then, after reading some threads, tried with raising RAM volt. to 1.9, 1,95 and lovering to 533Mhz
without result. could anyone have a idea hove to set RAM, or should i simply repair it with a chainsaw because I'm on the edge here.

Check your IRQs to see if something is conflicting. I had a problem with my sound and video car. I fixed it by switching PCI slots.

hi all

please can someone give me clear & concise intrcutions on how to update the bios on this mobo. I built a pc for my friend using this and need to update it.

i dont know what bios its on just now but on the asus website it says not to use ez-flash if its earlier than 0203, how do i flash it if not using ez-flash ?

the problem is the pc will post then shutdown, the next attempt it gets a bit further then shutsdown, after about 7 attempts it gets into windows and its fine from there. i hope flashing the bios will help :/

p.s it worked ok for the first 2 months

To update BIOS, store you new BIOS .bin file on another disk (partitioned or floppy),
boot on the BIOS (del) and go to the menu containing the flash utility.
There you will read the installed version of your bios and be able to flash the new one.
