On older systems upping the voltages just a tweak made the system more responsive. Are you recommending running at a lower voltage just to keep the system cool or because their is some other advantage on a newer system?

Labdog ~ lol, im doing a whole bunch of testing in the overclockers forum.
we have found a hidden switch that allows a 3:4 ratio on the P4B533.

my sig is upto date with my current config (im still testing tho)
sorry for the confusion.

<EDIT> i updated my rig page

Krellor...what is your motherboard temp? I'm curious about your temp issue ...i have the same issue with my bg7..i have 4 sunon case fans ...a chieftec aluminum case and i open the case up and stuck a house fan on the side and my temp is still high...at idle it's 48C and max out at 59C

I don't like this temp one bit...

Gregor1C -

Well using high voltages does shorten the lifespan of your CPU. How much is open for debate, but there have been reports of people frying 1.6A's using as little as 1.7V. Not that it's common, but I suppose it is possible.

That said, however, I'd shoot for the lowest voltage that your system is stable at. Upping the voltage past that (at the same speed) isn't going to make a bit of difference. Might as well go for the least strain on the system at the level you want to overclock at.

unfortunately...my vcore is only at 1.54V but yet the temp is at 48C idle...something is wrong...i use the stock intel hsf with artic silver3...have plenty of ventilation in case...at heavy load it's 58C to 60C

i think i will rma my bg7 and get this p4b533-v

sorry for posting this message here...for i need help

I doubt changing m/b's is going to cool your CPU down. Perhaps you should try a better heatsink and fan combo?

Though the P4B533V rocks!

on my previous board before this bg7...i had the asus p4s533...running pc probe 21608...my temp was 37C at idle...and under load ...48C

in either case the MB temp was the same 28C for the p4s533 as well as the BG7

I rma the p4s533 because it had intermitten problems with cold boots and secondary ide problems...and my case had no usb ports to cause the reported secondary ide issues

My first 533-V reported CPU temps of ~ 50C idle up to 68C under full load. I tried everything from lapping, to adjusting the alpha, etc.

Got a new board (had an issue with the bios data not being saved when the system was removed from AC power), and now my temps are 37-41C idle, 48-55C load.

Same brand, same model, etc.

Either I was doing something wrong the first 5-6 times I tried applying arctic silver/lapping/adjusting, or the temp readings on m/b's aren't exactly accurate I honestly don't know that answer to that.

With a stock HSF, however, you're not going to get much cooler. In my experiences, the voltage and overclock hasn't made all that much of a difference in the temperature.

The VM is a smaller board (3 PCI slots, etc), but also lacks some of the key overclocking features. I forget exactly which, but I believe it doesn't have some of the voltage options, etc as it's bigger brother, the V.

I'm pretty sure you can find more info if you do a search here, as this is where I got that info when I was trying to figure out the difference between the two.

Has anybody got the 3:4 ratio trick to work on the P4B533-V mobo? I saw that it works for the VM, but what about the V?

Oldfart, heard anything?

Just got my P4B533-V, 1.6A, and 512MB Samsung PC2700 setup this weekend. Running it at 2.4 @ 1.65 vcore. Using the 4:5 cpu/mem ratio to put memory at 375DDR with timings at 2.5/3/3/7 and default voltage. Left it on overnight to run Prime95 and it's been going strong for 15+ hours with no hiccups. System temp has been 27-32C depending on time of day, and CPU temp at load has been 51-55C. CPU idle temps were around 38C if I remember right, but I've been torture testing basically ever since it booted up after the first few times so I haven't been able to see it idle much.

I was actually trying to decide between the P4B533 (845E version) and this board, but I decided I wanted to get the higher memory ratio. Too bad I didn't see that an undocumented 3:4 ratio was found on the P4B533 before I went and bought this board. Oh well, I'll probably just keep the P4B533-V. It was only a $20 some-odd difference between the two anyway.

So much quieter switching from a 1.3 Tbird with a black label delta fan.

I'm running the 1004.7 bios and don't notice any changes. I've had 1002 1003 and now this one,and they all seem to run the same for me.

I should be receiving my P4B533-V in a couple of days now...

What is the VGA driver that I saw for this MB? is that same as an nvidia or radeon display driver? if so, I won't need to install it.

Any suggestions on which drivers to install? eithre from the cd or from asus website and in any particular order? I'm sure the chip set driver should be install first, the ICH4??

K just ordered mine from Essential Computer.
I will be installing to a fresh HD and 1.6A and 3200 DDR.
What do I do first after installing XP? Upgrade drivers, bios, or just go overclock?

I was going to order mine from Essential, but during checkout I felt like I was signing my life away. So, I decided to use Spartantech.com instead. The delivered quickly with no problems, but who knows what they would be like with RMA.
