Official BIOS ver 1006 released

This is an .exe file that is run from DOS.
Do not run this from any of the other BIOS update methods.
Boot to DOS and run the .exe file

Fixes are listed on the link but it does
correct the ATI 9700 Pro bios update issue and more.

Okay folks, I have what sounds like avery stupid question. I don't know if it's me, or I am readin the manual incorrectly. Can I use my 2 WD 8MB cache set up in RAID 0? And if I can, which connectors should I be using?
I guess if it can't, I can always buy a couple of SATA to PATA converters, right? I just bought the drives 3 months ago and don't want to have to replace them again so soon. But then on the other hand, I have to have RAID running. Well, I guess I don't HAVE to have it running, but i REALLY want it running

ScissorClaw,

If you don't want to buy a PCI ATA RAID card, your only option is to buy one SATA to PATA converter, and connect one of the WDs to the PATA port on the Promise controller and the other to one of the SATA ports also on the Promise controller (via the controller).

However, please bear in mind that as I said in my previous post, odds are that if you are using XP SP1 (and maybe other OSs) you won't really be able to use the Promise controller (unless you don't mind the OS stuttering like crazy).

So, considering the added cost of the SATA->PATA converter and the risk, if I were you I'd just disable the on-board Promise alltogether and buy a cheap Highpoint RocketRAID 133, which probably will cost you just a little bit over what the converter does, but will guarrantee you it actually works well.

Maybe this has already been discussed elsewhere, but is it my imagination or the CPU Temperatures that both MBMonitor and Asus PC Probe report are much lower than the ones the BIOS setup Hardware Monitor reports? Like 7ºC (13ºF) lower?

Has anyone noticed the same or is it only me?

Concerning buying the SATA to PATA converter, what if I bought two converters? Then I presume that will work instead of the card?

Makes no difference. Problem is the Promise controller, not being SATA or not.

Plus it's cheaper to buy the card than two converters anyway.

If you had the non-Deluxe version, which uses the ICH5R, then you could use it instead, with two converters. But the non-Deluxe version is nowhere to be found, which is a pity because it seems much better value for money.

Also a question about the problem with the promis controller and SP1. I read earlier that if you have SP1 slipstreamed, which I am guessing is all part of the OS when you install, you don;t seem to have the problem. Was I reading correctly? because my version of XP already has SP in with on the disk. No seperate install whatsoever? I really hope I read correctly.

No, I also tried with SP1 slipstreamed (included). Makes no difference. Problem is still there.

Thanks everybody for answering so quickly. I appreciate it. This really does suck though. It better be fixed sometime in the near future. If I pay $190 bucks for mobo, tha dang thing better run RAID whatever way I choose to run it. What a rip!!!

I am not happy with my Asus P4C800 Deluxe (bios 1006).

Asus has no FreeBSD gigabit drivers (3com 940), no stock Linux drivers (have to manually install ones from ASUS's ftp site), no DOS NDIS 2 drivers (so no Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image action), no sound drivers under FreeBSD OR Linux (I tried every supported sound driver in FreeBSD 5.0 and in Linux 2.4.20 kernel), SMBus sensors busted (lm_sensors, chm, and mbmon all either fail or give bogus information, eg, cpu at 255 o C), you have to bring your own USB connectors, 1384 connectors, Serial ATA, etc.

I am NOT a happy owner at the moment because of the DOS NDIS 2 missing drivers. I tried getting drivers from 3com, Asus, Broadcom (part of the 3com chip is Broadcom), Marvell (the other part; the Yukon chip inside the 3com is from Marvell) to no avail. I hex edited Broadcom's b57.dos driver to add support for the 3com PCI ids (0x10b7/0x1700) and it probes but gets the Mac address wrong and locks the machine. I tried the Compaq and IBM "Broadcom" drivers also.

I do have a ATI 9700 Pro with a -10 rev, I do not over clock, it does work perfectly find under Win2K and gives me 4660 score on 3dmark03 with a 2.4ghz cpu.

Hey everyone, hopefully someone can help me out with a few issues I have.

1. Every time I start up, I get the single beep ("Memory refresh timer error"). I tried every single DRAM refresh timers available in the BIOS, but the beep wouldn't go away. Any suggestions?

2. The PC Probe is detecting the +3.3 voltage as around 2.976 V, and every 20 seconds or so it drops below 2.96 (greater than the 10% threshold recommended by the program). I tried rearranging the wires in my case, but that didn't change anything.

3. In both 3DMark03 and 01, my video card is only being recognized as AGP4x, when it should be 8x. Is there a way to fix this?

4. In 3DMark01, I only got a score of around 14955, and in 03 I barely broke 5000. Should I be getting higher scores with what I have? I didn't think having only a single stick of RAM would hurt that much.

My system:

Pentium 4 3.00 GHz with 800 MHz fsb
Asus P4C800 Deluxe
1 x 512 MB Corsair XMS PC2700 memory (running at 320 MHz to utilize the 800 MHz fsb)
VisionTek Radeon 9800 Pro
1 x 80 GB Maxtor DiamondMax ATA/133 hard drive
Lite-On 52x24x52 CDRW drive
Raidmax 400W power supply
LianLi PC6070 case
Windows XP Professional

Sounds like your running that PC2700 a bit hard. You have such a nice set-up, why not spring for at least one stick of some kickin' PC3200. Strike that, BUY 2. You'll get much better performance running this board in dual mode. With the new RAM, maybe the DRAM error would go away. Of course, I'm not quite sure what a refresh error is, but maybe it is coming from running the memory to hard and fast. I hope somebody else has an idea, I'd hate to be giving bad info. But to get higher scores, I would definetly get AT LEAST another stick of PC2700, if not two PC3200. You could always sell the PC2700 on the For Sale board or something to help pay for the new mem.

First welcome to AT

You definately have a bottleneck with the bandwidth
running only 1 stick of ram. If you are not overclocked,
then you 3DMarks are really not that far off. Better memory
and running dual channel will effect you video performance.

Sounds good. I'm pretty sure I'll just get 2 sticks of PC3200 Corsair RAM, return my 2700 stick, and possibly get a new power supply. Some other people I've talked to seem to think it might be the power supply that is causing the voltage error.

On a side note - can someone explain to me what all the different voltages are for?

Thanks for your help!

vcore = to the cpu (keep it under 1.70v actual) (1.60v is better and default is best)
vdimm = voltage to the memory (only increase from default if memtest shows error)
vagp = voltage to video card (I run my AIW 9700Pro at 1.7v)

I tested my friend's 400W Sparkle power supply with my system, and all the voltages were almost exactly where they were supposed to be. So I guess it was my power supply causing the problem. I ordered an Antec TruePower 430W...hopefully that will fix everything.

Thanks for all your help!

Well good news folks. I tried the new Beta BIOS for the P4C800 Deluxe ton the Asus site that came out on Friday and it seems to care of the stutter problem that has been mentioned here in this thread. I don't have the problem anymore. I was wondering if it helped anybody else?

Well, it seems my thread above was a wee bit premature. First of all, I feel like a complete moron. I have been overclocking for a good 6 months now (definetly not a noob, but def not a pro) and for the life of me, I can't seem to find where to boost the FSB in the BIOS. I know some of you are probably bowing your heads in embarrasment at me, but I am now OFFICIALLY (yes, I am yelling) frustrated. EVen going through the manual has got me stumped.
My other problem is to what I referenced about abouve, I have the new BETA bios installed and I just ran PCMark 2002. My HD are 2 x WD 40 GB 8MB set up in RAID 0 on the Promise controller using 2 PATA to SATA converters. Now I have heard some pretty bad things about using this controller and it is ticking me off. These are the scores I got from the bench.

CPU 4930
MEM 7858
HD 857

Now the first two are okay, but that HD score is an embarrasment. I have seen scores of 15000 on Futuremarks site and I got to wonder how the hell they are getting that. My last board was a GA 8PE667 Ultra running the same setup and my HD score was about 3000. Something is definetly wrong in the land of Promise I figure. I did the install correctly as far as I can tell. I pressed F6 to install the RAID drivers at the beginning of my XP install. Evan after I was up and running I tried to maunually install the PRomise drivers again in the device manager. It looked like an okay install. It didn't say that the druver was present, or the driver that was present was just as good as the one I was about to install. However, upon reboot, I kept getting the BSOD just as XP started to fire up. What the heck am I doing wrong? Somebody help soon. I'm leaving for Vegas in two days to get married and I would like to have this dang thing fixed before I get back from the HM. Thanks all.

PS should I just dump the P4C800 and go with the IC7. I have heard some REALLY killer comments about that board.

I'm pretty much a novice ... well, fully a novice, but I'm having tremendous performance problems with my Ti4600 and the P4C800 Dlx board and would appreciate any suggestions you guys could make.

I've got the latest drivers for the Ti4600, the new 1007 BIOS for the MB, and 4 - 512mb sticks of TWINX 3200LLPT - 1024 Corsair. The CPU is a P4 3.0c.

On my 2.2 P4 (northwood), with 2 Gigs of PC800(non-ecc), and the same card, I scored ~10,800 on 3DMark2001SE.

My jaw dropped to find that with the new P4C800 board, my score had dropped to ~3900 !!!!!!!!

BTW, I'm running an enermax 460W PS.

Any ideas on what I should be looking at? Something is obviously very wrong. Help Please?
