I can give you a little personal experience to help answer your questions. A month ago I upgraded from the Gigabyte GA-8IHXP, P4 2.4B, 512MB Kingston PC1066 to the P4C800-E Deluxe, P4 3.0C, 512MB OCZ PC3700 Gold. So naturally I had to run some benchmarking comparisons.
Gigabyte System @ 133 fsb, p4 2.4b...pcmark 2002:
cpu: 5763
mem: 6372
New system, fsb @ 200, p4 3.0c, ddr400:
cpu: 7479
mem: 9699......so we can see here that at stock speeds it's no contest
New system, fsb @ 160, p4 3.0c @ 2.4, ddr333:
cpu: 5978
mem: 9048......now with the cpu's at identical speeds, the new system just barely wins but the memory score is still much higher
New system, fsb @ 133, p4 3.0c @ 2.0, ddr333:
cpu: 4987
mem: 7766......now with the fsb's at identical speeds, the new system still has better memory bandwidth @ ddr333
For shits and giggles: New system, fsb @ 100, p4 3.0c @ 1.5, ddr266:
cpu: 3742
mem: 6130......even at an fsb of 100 and ddr266 the memory score is still on par with the I850E rambus system.
My previous system was by no means a slouch...but the upgrades have most certainly made it faster.
