I am looking to build a system with this board and was looking for a recommendation on a stbale video card. I have heard some people having issues with earlier ATI cards, for example. I do not play games, so don't need blazing fast 3D performance. I'd rather have something that is very stable and has high quality 2D.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I asked a similar question here. What exactly have you heard about older ATI cards? I may still use my AIW Radeon 7500 on the new mobo.

I didnt see if this was psoted or not, but I for one am not happy with the built in 3Com. Firstly, it will not run with sygate personal firewall and a friend who has an ABIT board with the same controller has the same problem. However his D-link router works with his. The problem is, not only does syagte not work, but I am running into problems with this LOM and my Linksys router. It doesnt matter if I DMZ myself even, things like remote assitance in MSN and such wont work. I have installed another netgear external nic and tried a realtek. Both allow me to run everything, not DMZed, and woth sygate. Everything functions properly. Either this 3Com card has a swack of incompatablilites, I am the only one tryign these products, or 3Com really needs to amke a set of decent drivers. Anyone know?

All I can suggest is for you to try the very latest drivers for the integrated NIC. I don't know what mobo you have exactly, but when I was browsing the customer reviews at Newegg for the P4P800 variants and the P4C800 variants, I saw some mention that same problem. A lot of these boards are having to be returned at Newegg, I don't know if they are getting defective boards and reselling them or what. Other vendors could have the same problem if you got yours elsewhere.

You may also want to try to change the IRQ settings for the integrated NIC. If you can't do it in windows, do it in the BIOS.

What does Asus gain from this policy? Maybe I'll just buy the Abit Max3 or IC7G, what do you folks recommend? Will it be worth waiting for 2 more months for the E version?

Perhaps they dont have them in retail stores yet, havent seen them, but they are widly available online

Dialup users aren't going to need the CSA LAN, but they are going to need the ICH5R hub. Everyone would benefit from it.

Have any of you checked the temperature readings via software, like Sandra or other hardware monitoring utility and see if they are same as the BIOS shows?

Even if you get a router with gigabit you wont be able to get enough data from any broadband connection to "saturate" your PCI bus with your NIC, cable being 1.5Mbs and routers WAN ports only being 10Mbs and then the 1000Mb Nic.... The problems people think they will get without Intel's CSA is overrated

ATI has the best Image Quality hands down for 3D and they are just as good if not better than Nvidia on 2D, but ATI isnt the devil like Nvidia

I would get the latest WHQL drivers from the Asus site, I havent had any problems with mine and I have m y machine on a linksys router, using DMZ host and port forwarding everything works for me.

Why do think Nvidia is "the devil"? I'm curious to know since I don't know what video card to use either. I have an AIW Radeon 7500 64mb, GeForce MX2 64mb, V4 4500 32mb, and Rage Fury Maxx 64mb. I guess the Maxx is out since there are no XP drivers for it except for what's on the XP CD. Probably none for the Voodoo either.

Yeah, that's what I've heard and I know, but the past few days in reading more mobo reviews I'm seeing more and more emphasis about "PCI Bus saturation". USB is there, controller cards, audio, Promise or Si3112a SATA, etc., and with a LAN they seem to feel that it's possible for it to choke a bit.

Yeah, I have tried the altest driver....044 or whatever it is I believe. I have tried, I even exchanged my board for a new one, still the same problem. This is defintely a problem on 3Com's end I do believe. Ummm..can you actually use remote assistance and such without DMZing? When I go into DMZ mode, it will not let me use msn's remote assistance, and whitebaord and such. If you can let me know if that works. I have the Asus P4C800 deluxe for whoever was wondering, but I knwo its the same 3C 940 LOM from 3com thats on the p4P boards as well, and apprently some ABIT's. This issuse has driven me up the wall lol...I jsut use an external nic now. I cant be the only one having issuses with it.

Sorry I can't help you since I don't even have the mobo yet. All I can say is to keep asking here, someone with the same problem or has heard of it is bound to read it .....and contact 3com & Asus directly and see what they have to say.

I'm going to give this another shot......
Have you guys that are having these problems gotten them fixed yet? I'm thinking of getting the 800-E Deluxe. Does anyone know any issues with it and GeIL Ultra Platinum PC4000? Have any of you tried the Vdimm mod yet?
Thanks.

rhawk79, what is the latest on this, did the new CPU fix your problem?
So I've narrowed it down the CPU. I think something has gone wrong with it. Newegg is sending a new one...should be here Tuesday so hopefully the problem will be resolved then...basically I would try disabling hyperthreading and lowering your fsb (even under 200)...if your problems go away then your cpu may be causing the instability.
walk2, from reading the customer reviews at Newegg on these boards (P4C and P4P) seems that many are having USB problems and they are saying you have to disable Legacy USB in the BIOS for it to work! Many are also having problems with the integrated LAN.

Man....maybe I should scratch the P4C800-xx from my list with all these problems!

solrak, you said "I fixed the problem.".........so what problem was it and how did you fix it?

I havent had any problems with my board, USB or NIC, only thing i had was my soundcard was bad and was causing system reboots.. but after a new one Its run flawlessly for the most part anyway...

I just got a problem trying to run AsusUpdate, when i went to open it, it slowed down my comp real bad the mouse was hardly moving, then it froze all together, after cycling power I now get an error message when i open it, several actually.. something about BS_DEF.dll (NT Service registry error)(Biosinfo.dll) and then saying it only supports ASUS motherboads... then the program comes up with an immediate Error Report to send to microsoft.

I'll try to uninstall and reinstall but its wierd, the first error changes everytime i open it.. its now just a bunch of giberish like unknown characters from another language.. all "?"'s

Oh well

If "Asus Update" is the method to check for and get the new BIOS releases, I've heard of it causing problems before.

Ironwolf, does your setup work OK without Sygate running, or without it installed?

Hey all, I'm a rookie with this mobo and all...so excuse my stupid question.

I want to update my bios...I think I'm running 1002 I recall...basically whatever my mobo shipped with (ASUS P4C800 Deluxe...bought about 2 months ago). I just downloaded the latest posted BIOS from the ASUS web page....1011, posted on 9/4/2003. I also downloaded the utility AFUDOS to update the bios.

With this, do I put both of these on a disc and do it from a DOS prompt? Sorry for the basic question, just couldn't find any good instructions on their web page.

Also, I'm interested in the problems some of you all are experiencing, as I haven't experienced any of this yet in the 2 months I have had it running. my 3COM LAN seems to be working good - this in conjunction with a Linksys router. All USB is working flawless too. Games run great - no issues, apps run great too! My only issue is that when running benchmark utilities like 3DMark 200x...the app shuts itself down half way through. Its strage, because all of the games I have, don't have any issues. The BIOS is REALLY REALLY early though...so I was hoping that might help. My video card is very old too...but should still work at least. Waiting for a reason to upgrade that! => Anyhow...here are my specs in case anyone is curious:

P4C800 Deluxe (BIOS 1002 - needs updating!)
Intel P4 - 3.0 Ghz 800 Mhz FSB
1 Gig Crucial TwinX LL PC3200 DDR400 (in dual channel mode)
Hercules GeForce3 Ti200 - 64 meg ram
Sound Blaster Audigy2 Platinum
Western Digital 200 Gig special edition (8 meg buffer)
Maxtor 7200 rpm 60 Gig drive
Samsung 16x DVD
Samsung 52x24x52x CD-RW

Thanks for any info you can offer on updating the BIOS...and any tips you can offer on getting 3Dmark to run!

cip4465, hello. I don't have the mobo yet so I can't tell you anything about your bench crashes. That's odd. If you're not overclocked anywhere then I don't know what could be causing it. You may try to reinstall 3Dmark or your video drivers....possibly update your mobo drivers.

As for the BIOS update, every mobo manufacturer is different about the process. Asus has directions at their site on the steps.
Do not use Aflash.exe to update BIOS. Please use EZflash or Afusos.exe.
See details here

Yea for updating the P4C800 series use this program (ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/P4C800/AFUDOS.zip)

Just make a boot disk and stick that along with the files included in the BIOS zip.

If your like me and you didnt bother to buy a floppy drive for the new machine, then you can lookup how to create a bootable CD and then burn the BIOS stuff on a CDRW which u can then update it from there..

Or what i did the last two updates is use the AsusUpdate program that lets you flash the BIOS from within windows, I've had problems with their latest release gonna try to reinstall it before i give up.

I would give you a link to the Bootable CD image and stuff but im not at my machine.. post it later if you need it.

Hey Computer, with syagte installed it will work if I allow all in sygate or I shut it down. This is wierd, cause sygate should be transparent, and has no problems with netgear or realtek nic cards. Also, for those that have there routers working and are able to use remote assisntace and whiteboard in msn, please tell me what router number you have and what firmware version you have. I am running a Linksys BEFSR 41 v.2 with firmware v.1.42.7
