Antec and Enermax are fairly safe bets. A lot of overclockers use them because they're reliable and the prices are reasonable. Fortron also makes good PSU's. If money is no object, get a PC Power & Cooling power supply. They are the best. I have a 510W unit and it's rock solid. You can even adjust the rail voltages manually. The important thing to look for in a PSU is not the wattage but rather the unit's ability to pump steady current, especially under load. Also, as the temperature in your case heats up, your PSU will deliver less watts, which is why it's important to have good air circulation inside the case.

Thanks for the reply David!

Yes I've heard good things about all of those and especially about the PC Power. The box I'm considering is well, very big and one of the concerns I have is having a power supply that has long enough wires to reach the MOBO in just about every area, so what I was planning on doing is just go with the Power supply from Thermaltake since it's built with the case I'm going to purchase in mind. The spec's and reviews I'm seeing on this particular PSU seem to be good and stable. Has anyone had any experience with the Purepower 480W+ PFC made by Thermaltake?

If you have I'd love to hear your experience with this PSU. In the meantime I'll look into the spec's of some of the PC Power units.

Thanks again David!

The P4C800-E Deluxe has four onboard SATA connectors (two for Intel controller and two for Promise controller). The board also comes with two SATA cables. There are numerous ways of setting up a RAID array on this mobo. You can use the Intel SATA connectors, the Promise SATA connectors, the Promise IDE RAID connector, or you can hook up a RAID card to one the PCI slots.

Thanx
I meant for power but I found the answer (yes with this psu I will need one for a raid array the other is already on the psu) still wonder if I can run a single drive off the sata as boot like I have on ide raid boards)

I have to say, the PC Power & Cooling unit is impressive and so are the reviews for the 510 ATX-Deluxe. With only a 1% variance for all rails at any load, is almost unheard of by all the other makers that I've looked at.

It is expensive though but I think if your going to do any serious o'clocking it would be foolish not to consider shelling out the dough for this one.

I'm sold, I'll be ordering mine this weekend.

Thanks to all who responded to my questions on PSU's I appreciate it!

Hello all,

I have a P4 3.0c, Asus P4C800-E deluxe motherboard with 2 different name brand PC2700 ddr's.

When I boot up all the time it beeps a couple of times then continues to boot up without a problem after this. The beeping that happens sounds almost like "chirping".

high beep, high beep, low beep, high beep, high beep, low beep, high beep.

. . - . . -.

Like in that pattern.

I'm not overclocking anything and I am using all the standard bios settings. I was wondering if this was normal or what is going if its not normal and how I can go about fixing this problem. Also another minor problem I noticed is that the hard drive LED is constantly luminated. I checked the make sure that the wire wasn't plugged in upside down.

I'm using a Western Dig 120 gb 8mb on the primary IDE with a Pioneer DVD-Rom, Pioneer DVD-RW and Liteon 40x CDRW on the secondary IDE and last but not least a Fujitsu 20gb and IBM deskstar 22gb on the promise controller running on normal IDE mode.

Could anyone give some insight as to whats going on with my PC?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like (no pun intended) your getting bios warnings. Specific beeps mean specific things depending on the bios used. Beyond that I think you have to map the beeps your hearing with whatever the bios warnings are suppose to mean for that bios. Beyond that I'm not going to be much help to you, sorry.

Well from what I counted it was either 7 or 8 beeps and in the motherboard book it says 7 beeps is General Exception error and 8 beeps is Display memory error.

I doubt my video card is the problem because its like 1 month old and I don't know how to treat the General Exception error.

The motherboard may not like the fact that you're using two different brands of RAM. As a test, you could try booting up with just one memory stick and seeing what happens. The beeps normally indicate the number of USB devices you have hooked up to your board. For instance, I get two beeps because I have two things (keyboard & mouse) connected to the USB ports. Asus explains this on its website in the FAQ section. link

ahh, that would make alot of sense! would it count the devices you have hooked up to a USB hub as well?

I have a keyboard, USB HD, USB hub and my nomad jukebox 2.0 hooked up to the onboard USB ports.

the hub has my mouse, joystick, gamepad and ipaq pda connected to it.

Not sure about the USB hub because mine is not hooked up. But it looks like you have eight USB devices. So if you're getting eight beeps, it could mean everything is normal. You could try disconnecting the hub or some of the devices and seeing if you get fewer beeps during boot up.

Now about the new Raptor........ &^%#!*&$!!!! :| :| :| I should have known as soon as I got my WD360GD they'd have a better one blowing it away! No, I haven't installed it yet, I can't even make my mind up on a mobo. So..anyone want to buy a WD360GD Raptor? Vortexted You're saying you have the 36gb Raptor, right?
I got anxious and already bought 2 Raptors so I can run Raid 0 right from the start. How much are you asking for it though, I have a friend who is considering buying one now as well. Got mine for $126 at googlegear with 2nd day free shipping. Cant complain about that price.

[qcurrently the best DEAL or best BUY for this mobo is Geil Ultra Platinum PC4000 for overclocking (2x512mb). For non overclocked speeds it's the OCZ Gold PC3700. The best for overclocking price no issue is the OCZ PC4000. I assume it's the "Gold" as well, but the review said "Copper" and there is no OCZ "Copper". The Geil is about $70 cheaper for 256x2 which makes it a much better deal. See the Memory Holy Grail Pt. 2 article at Anandtech. Note that the PC4000 Geil 2x512mb kit is Double sided memory, while the 2x256mb kit is SINGLE SIDED. You get better performance from DOUBLE sided, however what I read in an article was you canNOT enable PAT on this mobo while using FOUR DS memory modules. So, for this mobo it appears that 4x256mb Geil PC4000 may give the best performance when using all four banks. All four banks populated also gives better performance that two being used.
I didn't go with that Geil Ultra memory just because I have never heard of them (until I read that review) and their web site looked very cheesy. Also they are located in Tawain. What happens if you have problems with the Geil memory..what a bitch its going to be to get it replaced. Also give a little time and I bet Asus will have a bios update to correct the PAT being disabled with 4 DS memory banks installed.

I've been looking everywhere for matched pairs of OCZ EL DDR PC-4000/500/Gold Edition Ram online and can't find an online seller who sells it as matched pairs (2x512) = 1 Gig Do any of you know of a reseller online that sells it this way?

If so can you point me to who may have it? I've looked at a bunch of reputable places to buy it from such as newegg but they don't appear to sell it this way.

Any help here would be appreciated.

vortexted, I'm sorry, but u are an idiot, my friend. GeIL is a very well known company. Them being located in Taiwan has nothing to do with their "replacing abilities". U're NOT going to send the RAM back to Taiwan, first of all. U'd send it to one of their US offices... Secondly, usually, u'd have to contact the company where u bought the RAM to get a replacement.

I'm holding off on purchasing the drives I want which are the NEW 74 Gig Raptors, until they come out and then I'll buy two of those. I have a SCSI 36 Gig 15,000 RPM HDD and SCSI card that I'll use for this new machine in for the Interim.

I'm looking at Graphics cards but I'm unsure of which I'm going to purchase. The reviews I've been reading on the Nvidia 5900 and the ATI 9800 seem inconclusive so I need to do some more investigation there. I do have an older Nvidia Quadro 4 200 that is 4x AGP that will have to do until I can decide on which of the two above I'll end up going with.

At any rate I'd appreciate any feedback on what you think of this setup. I'm going to be pushing the submit button on the items shown here in the next few hours so let me know what you think.

Take care and Happy o'clocking!

Well CannibalisticH0b0 I think you could have communicated this without personally attacking vortexted.

Just because the answer is obvious to most, doesn't mean you have to get personal.

LOL, sorry if I offended you, vortexted!

Anyway, that's a very nice setup, Xeon! You coulda saved some money, buying that stuff you wanna buy (or bought) some place else, though. Also, if you're spending that much on a case, you should've gone with something like Lian Li, not ThermalTake. However, if ya really really want the already-installed temp monitor and whatnot, go ahead. From what I understand, Thermaltake cases are basically highly-modified Chieftec/Antec cases, and those are pretty good.

Also, if the case doesn't come with any fans, or if you didn't buy any fans yet, get a few Panaflo L1A's. PCP&C Silencer fans are pretty nice, too, though (I have 2 installed in my case, and all I can say is... SILENT). Of course, if you're not worried about hurting your years, just get a few high-CFM Delta fans

About the video card, either get a 9800Pro 128MB or the FX 5900 Ultra. Can't really help you decid between those 2, but I really do not recommend getting the 256MB of the 9800Pro, as benchmarks have proved that it really doesn't have a benefit at this point in time to have that extra 128MB. Thus, no need to waste that extra $100 or whatever.

Finally, plz consider which heatsink+fan to use on that 2.4C of yours. Since you're obviously gonna OC a lot (judging by that PC4000 RAM of yours...), do not use the stock fan. I'd say your best bet is Thermalright, from what I hear (but that could've changed from a couple of moths ago when I did some research on this). As for the fan to use on that bad boy, that depends on how much noise you can take ;*)

Looks like you're putting together a nice rig. With that RAM, you should be able to really overclock your CPU. One suggestion. Plextor came out with a new DVD drive (PX-708A) that Anandtech recently reviewed. It costs more than the Pioneer. But it has 8X DVR+R. The Anandtech review says the Plextor beats the Pioneer A06 "in virtually every way." For what it's worth, I'm using a Sony DW-U10A. I bought it because it supports both DVD-R and DVR+R and it was fairly cheap ($160). As far as heat sinks and fans go, you might want to check out the Zalman CNPS-7000. It comes in two varieties: all copper or a combination of cooper and aluminum. I'm using the latter because it weighs less than the all-copper version. Works great and looks great in my case.

Thanks CannibalisticH0b0 !

I wasn't to concerned about saving a few pennies going somewhere else. It's more important for me to get this all from one source and from a place that's going to give me reliable service.

As for the case, I have spent loads of time evaluating these cases and for the money spent, this box offered all I was looking for. I looked long and hard at the antec equivelant the Antec Plus View 1000 as well. In fact, up until today I finally decided on the Thermaltake after going down to my local Fry's computer store and physically inspected both these models. One of the features I liked most on this box is the number of fans (7) and also the orientation of the drive bay's. Instead of having the drives pointing towards the rear, they point towards the removable panel on the side so that you can pull them straight out. Although the fan control was a nice touch, it had no bearing on my decision to go with this case. It's shear size and the fact that it was all aluminum (dissapates heat better) I decided today that this was the case for that I could continue to use for years into the future and at a great price. It comes with all seven fans, but it's very likely I'll be swapping the stock ones out for different ones in the near future.

Yeah I've heard the same things about the ATI card concerning the 128 Vs. the 256 and your right, it's likely that if I went for this card I would just go with the 128.

I've almost nailed down which Heatsink fan setup I'm going to purchase for this cpu, but haven't finalized. It's likely in the next few days I'll make a decision on that and I'll keep you guys posted as to what I decide on, and get your feedback. The SP94 by Thermalright is the one I'm considering right now, but I need to do some more investigating.

Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it!

Thanks DAVIDS !

Your right the Plextor 708A is pretty impressive. I've owned plextor before and they make great stuff.

As for the cpu fan; I looked at the Zalman's but the thing the I don't like about them is the fact that you cannot use any fan that you want, where as the Thermalright's you can. They use a lot of gimmicky setups that I wasn't to fond of. This is the primary reason I'm leaning towards one of their units.

Thanks a lot for the feedback Davids, I'm going to seriously consider going with the other plastic spinner now that you've pointed it out.

Take care and Happy o'clocking!

the ocz s rated for 2.5, 3 .. etc will it run at 2,2,2,5 at stock clocks (400mhz) like Mushkin promo build claims to ?
The OCZ PC4000 Gold yes, it's 2.5-4-4-7. I've never used it so I can't say if it will run faster timings at a slower DDR rate, but the Geil PC4000 UP will. I have some of it (2x256 kit) and I tested it in my P4B533 (845 chipset) for the heck of it and it's running 2-2-2-5 for a 1.8a CPU @2.5ghz, 1:1 ratio.

I don't remember what thread here it was, but I and another posted something on the new Mushkin II PC3500 and I keep forgetting that it now has the speed throne over OCZ Gold PC3700 at stock speeds, with the OCZ PC4000 is still the fastest overclocked with the Geil PC4000 a very close 2nd. I would consider OCZ, Geil & the Mushkin II over the Corsair since all of them are higher O'clockers and have (jcpiercy) faster timings. The PC3200xx Corsair has fast timings but they start to really slow down @PC3500 & higher.
Geil PC4000 UP
OCZ (You have to click the "Dual Channel Gold" links on that page).

Sorry I don't know of any vendors in Canada. :frown: If TigerDirect has a .ca website then I don't know why the shipping would be high, since I would assume that "division" is in Canada. ? I'm sure you could find several @Google by searching for things like you're looking for with a cross-search of "Canada" and "Canadian".

Someone asked for power supply info....... here's the review links on them:
Tom's Hardware (You'll find page #1 there somewhere).
Anandtech (This is Pt. 2, I don't remember if I read Pt. 1 or Pt. 2, but they should have link to Pt. 1 there somewhere).

TommyD I don't know if it was you I told or not, but if you go to Newegg and look up the variations of this mobo and user reviews for them you'll see all kinds of USB problems, and they are saying they had to disable "Legacy USB" in the BIOS to fix the issues. Another one said he never could use his USB hub.

vortexted if I sell mine I'll probably have to put it at my website to get more $ for it since the AT'ers know all about the best prices. I paid $135 for mine and that was the cheapest place at the time. Since I use a WD800JB now, I was going to use it as the "storage" drive on the new PC, but I may end up keeping the old Raptor (WD360GD) and use it as the "storage" drive instead, with the new Raptor as the main drive. Heck November (release date for the new Raptor) is a ways off I don't know if I want to wait that long to finish this new PC. So, I may use the 360GD now and just have to start all over when the WD740GD's come out. FAIK they could be 300 bucks and I'm not about to pay that for one. I guess before I do anything I need to find out what they are going to be selling for.

I guess if you (or I) happen to have problems with the Geil memory I'd return it to the vendor. Yeah I know the sites look pretty "odd", but that's a non-USA site for ya. Even though it's geilusa.com, they are still based overseas. Yeah that would be great if Asus would come out with the BIOS update for that, but that issue sounds a bit to "specific" for them to go through the trouble if fixing that one thing with that one brand of memory. Maybe they will, who knows.

Xeon, go to pricewatch and search for "OCZ 4000 Gold" (no quotes) and you'll find more options. Some vendors have it listed as PC4000 and some PC-4000, as well as other variants in it's description. You'll have to scroll a bit though through the single stick listings. Also, their "GOLD" is NOT the same as their "Enhanced Latency", that is two different memory types. To add, do not pay any $229 for a PSU when you can get the Fortron (see links above) for only $59!!

As for a case, I searched a lot and got the "Matrix" from Directron. It's like what I use now (Antec 1040 clone) but much taller with a 90mm fan hole in the rear top. Buyextremegear also has the 1040 clones for only $35 w/o PS (what I currently use).

Thanks computer !

Yeah I read all the reviews here and at Tomshardware and the PC Power & Cooling unit can't be beat. In every category, even for the less powerful PC Power unit they used in these reviews, it beat all the supplies in every category. With only a 1% variance on all rails, I decided that was good enough for me. The other reason I went with this PSU was due to the amount of raw power this particular unit has. Although it's rated at 510 that's it's idle Power and it's peak is 650. Due to the fact that this box alone has seven fans to start with I will eventually fill every HDD slot (6), and the fact that no one really knows what the future will bring, I will have this PSU for years to come with now issues surrounding the amount of power I'll need. Price wasn't even a consideration for me in this area, I simply wanted the best. I think most o'clocker's chince out in this area and it's one of the most important.

As for the case, cost wasn't an issue here for me either, I simply went for the box that gave me all the features I wanted and even some that I hadn't considered until actually looking at all the choices out there.

This just another area that makes building a box so much fun, each builder can add their own personality and preferences, making their Screaming machine something as unique as a fingerprint. Thank god for that because it would be pretty boring if we all built the same damn box. Man I love this stuff!

Ay any rate, your feedback computer has been instrumental in me picking the choices that I have. In fact some of the most important components such as the cpu and RAM, were investigated with a lot of your help and caused me to look further and ask more questions, making me settle on the items in my list above, So for that, I thank you for your time and patience in explaining a good portion of my questions.

The good news is, I pushed that submit button last night and all my components have been ordered, with the exception of DVD/CD writer (Deciding if it's going to be a Plextor 708A or the Pioneer DVR-A06), Hardrives (waiting on the new 74 Gig Raptors), and new Graphics Card (between the ATI 9800 Pro or the Nvidia 5900 Ultra (I'm partial to Nvidia which isn't helping matters any)).

At any rate, I'm on my way and I can't wait to get this box up and running. Soon I'll be posting pic's and Stat's so keep an eye out for them here in the near future!

Thanks to all for their valuable feedback! You all have been a great help to me!
