I have only a single SATA drive running, it's the WD Raptor though, with a rotational speed of 10000rpm. I have it configured as my primary hdd.
do you have your SATA drive configered as primary master on an IDE controller, or do you mean something else with primary?!
Benchmark Breakdown:
-Buffered Read: 90MB/s
-Sequential Read: 43MB/s
-Random Read: 9MB/s
-Buffered Write: 22MB/s
-Sequential Write: 48MB/s
-Random Write: 17MB/s
-Average Access Time: 5ms

I do recommend the WD Raptor. But I suppose you want capacity over performance.
I know is that most 7200rpm drives all have max. read performances around 60MB/s, so how is that with your WD Raptor as I can't make it up from the figures you mentioned since you mention 3 different read values?

I built my system a few days ago, and have a few questions:

It was the first time I put a computer together, and am wondering if it is possible to change the HS+Fan, the one I have now is kind of loud and I don't know if I did a good job when applying the thermal paste. The HSF I have is big... and I'm currently reluctant to just go ahead and try to remove it without getting some answers and opinions first. So far I can't even access the lever on the ZIF socket because the heatsink is in the way. Will trying to remove the HS+Fan damage the CPU while it's still locked into the ZIF socket?

After configuring MBM5, my temperature readout for my CPU is 25-26C, and 22C for the MB (same with PCProbe), with only the 120mm rear chasis fan that came with the case for air flow. CPU temperature is usually 30-36C in the BIOS, though, which to me seems high when it's idle. It's about 13C (it's winter) where I am, and was wondering if the people here could share their temperatures so we can compare. In summer it can get to 40C+ here, and the notion I have now is that I didn't do a good job--relative to the current weather and readouts I'm seeing. I hope I done a decent job of it... I would really appreciate any tips or help. I've already done some googling, but it hasn't helped... much...

I also plugged in a thermal probe from my old system into the 2-pin connection on the mobo for power temperature, it's currently just sitting in the case and I plan to either use it on my video card or hard drive. I think probing the video card would be a better idea, any suggestions on how to do this? Should I just tape it somewhere on the heatsink so that it's near the GPU?

Also... what does the xx in rev 1.xx mean? I know rev means board revision, but what's xx?

Computer setup:

Antec Sonata
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
Pentium 4 2.8c
Thermaltake Spark 7 (it's loud, but after using the fan only connector from the Antec PSU, it's quiet @ 2300rpm)
1 x 256 Kingston DDR 333MHz (my 2 x 256 Kingston Hyper-X PC3500 should be here tomorrow morning)
PowerColor RADEON 9700 Pro (with the samsung 2.86ns modules, and a part number ending with 30)
WD Raptor

I am running Windows XP Pro with SP1a, flashed the BIOS from stock 1005 to 1007 release, installed DirectX 9.0a, installed the latest ATi drivers and control panel, and haven't overclocked anything, the only overclocking I plan is to sync the CPU External Frequency with the DRAM Frequency (217MHz).

Yes, you can change the heatsink/fan (HSF), but I don't think you need to. 30-36C is just fine for a high-watt 2.8C CPU. Just set the Q-Fan control in BIOS at the lowest setting and see how that does for you. If you do change it, don't release the CPU from the socket before removing the HSF! Just peal the sucker off, and don't remove the CPU at all unless you need to strip and re-grease it. I recommend the Zalman CNPS-6500AlCU or the Thermalright SLK900U. You get VERY good cooling (not the best, the CNPS7000CU is the top dog right now), and you can choose your own fan (which you can't do with the 7000CU). It comes with a Zalman FanMate1, which allows you to turn down the voltage to the fan, which slows and quiets it. Put a Panasonic Panaflo 92mm on the heatsink bracket and turn it down until your comfortable with the balance between cool and quiet.

Check out http://www.silentpcreview.com for pretty much the best information in the world on how to make a computer quiet, and cruise their forums for a wealth of info.

BTW: this is pretty off-topic for a motherboard forum and thread, even though you are using the P4P800.

That's dubious to me. I had an SATA converter on my Maxtor DM+9 drive (which melted for unrelated reasons. Long story. I hate Ajump) and the sucker FLEW. Sandra rated it as faster than a 2 disk ATA133 RAID-0 array, actually faster than a standard ATA150 drive. Definitely got MUCH better results using it than I do now using the ATA100 cable that came with the board. But I'll give you hard numbers tonight: the replacement converter arrives and I'll do a solid comparison.

I'm building a system for a friend with the dlx, 2.4C, 2x512 Hyperx 3200, Raptor, 120JB, 9600 Pro...

I'm having some app problems, but I'm working that out.

I wanted to get in here and tell you how shocked I was at the performance of the Raptor. It's quiet, fast, and smooth. It's HDTech scores are higher than the 10k U160 SCSI drive I have in my other System.

Can someone please help me?
My system:
P4 3.00 Ghz
P4P800 Deluxe bios ver. 1007
AIW 9700 Pro
2x512 pc3200 Corsair xms cas 2
450 watt psu
Whenever I try to enable Turbo mode the system won't boot up. The system seems to kick on but the monitor light just keeps flashing. I have to turn the computer off and back on and it gives me an error saying overclocking failed. I have tried every setting I could think of including setting the memory to the slowest settings. I can run the memory with the settings 2 3 3 5 without turbo enabled. I was wondering if the problem is definitely the video card since the part number ends in 10 and it is recommended to have a card with at least a part number of 30. If it is the vid card that is the problem is there any thing I can do to fix this without getting a new card? I also am using the catalyst 3.4 driver. Anything anyone can suggest would be big help. Thanks

I'm betting the problem is your Corsair XMS sticks. Read up in their forums (www.corsairmicro.com or corsairmemory.com... can't remember which), but they're recommending speeds of like 2-3-3-7-4bank for this sort of ram, with a voltage bump. I've got a single XMS 512mb PC3200LL stick that gives me fits at 2-2-3-6-8bank if I enable Performance Mode at turbo, MAM enabled, 2.75v . That same stick seems to be fine with 2-2-3-6-4bank, MAM enabled, Performance mode at auto.... default voltage.

I'm still playing with memory settings - using GoldMemory and running for 10 hours or so at a time (overnight, while at work) to test for errors.

I'm building a new system...need to know what the deal about the onboard ethernet is, the difference between intels CSA bus, and say..Asus using 3Com's non-CSA chipset.

What are the advantages, and will I ever need the extra bandwidth the CSA bus enables?

I download music, and stuff, but other than that, from what I've read...unless you do alot of dedicated very large file transfers back and forth...the CSA bus enabled chipset is not going to do you any favors when it comes to download speeds off the internet.

I know other boards went with Intel's CSA enabled chipset....but are around $30-40 more expensive than the Asus P4P800 Deluxe.
Is it worth the extra cash? Or a waste of money 'cause I will probably never make use of the CSA bus's advantages anyways?
Thanks for your help in advance...

I Don't think it is the memory because I have tried running it at the slowest speeds 3 4 4 8. Whenever I enable turbo mode it won't boot. It ran fine at 2 3 3 5 with turbo disabled. So, I think the memory is probably fine. However, if I try to run it at 2 2 2 5 it won't boot either. So, I don't know what is going on. I just figure it is the 9700 pro because the manual says that my card might not be good for overclocking. I am hoping a new bios or video driver will resolve the issue if that is it. Thanks for the response.

do you have your SATA drive configered as primary master on an IDE controller, or do you mean something else with primary?!

Sorry, I meant I have it configured as the hdd with my OS on it, I didn't mean primary IDE. I have another old hdd on primary IDE, the Raptor I have is connected to one of the SATA connections (ICH5R). I configured the BIOS so that the Raptor has 1st boot priority.

@Revolutionary

Thanks for the help! And sorry about asking in the wrong forum.

Still, 30C does seem high to me for this cold weather...

Enabling Turbo mode will automatically set your timings to 2-2-2-5-4. I do have some issues with my 9700Pro AIW (-10 series), but it's been more slowing benchies rather than stopping o/c's. At least as far as I know...

Lots of RAM seems to have trouble with RAS-to-CAS delay of 2 on the P4P800. Corsair says you must run 2-3-2-6 on their LL on the P4P800 (3 being RAS-to-CAS). However, I had TwinX512-3200LL that would run 2-2-2-5 stable, but my TwinX1024-3200LL corrupts the BIOS if I try to boot with RAS-to-CAS 2 (I'm running 2-3-3-7 for the time being since I don't want to take out the CMOS battery again tonight).

Hopefully a future BIOS will allow better timings since this RAM was not cheap.

And their is "a future BIOS" now that allows better overclockability....Geez
And you will continue to have problems in the future unless you do flash 1006....Geez

Help. I am just building my first computer and I have a problem. I have
P4P800 Deluxe (1007 Bios, set for WinME usage)
P4 2.4C
WinME
2x512 Apacer PC3200
Maxtor 120 G hard drive
Asus v9520 Magic (fx5200) video card

I'm using WinME because of hardware that I have which does not have XP drivers. I have installed ME with no problem, all of the motherboard drivers with no problem. When I install the video driver, the system has errors and after rebooting a couple of times, all boot system on drive C is no longer recognized. I have tried installing the driver at different times in the installation process, but it always crashes. I have reformated and reinstalled the OS five times with no luck. I currently have the system installed up to the point of installing the video driver. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry I cannot be of more assistance, but WinMe will nit run HT, only XP will. By set for WinMe usage, you mean HT turned off? You do get a fair boost from HT in my experience, you might need to consider upgrading your older components. I never ran WinMe, I ran 98 to 2k about 2mos after 2k came out. I've heard Me really sucks though . Hmmm, hope no one takes that out of context.

Slammy1.......... Yes the HT is turned off, set to compatible mode, P-ATA only, etc. I have used ME for a couple of years with no problem.

Is there a bios setting that I missed that would cause this?

I did a Google search and found a similar problem to yours (same rig, random crashes). With them it was a memory issue. Try this. In the BIOS, set the FSB to 200MHz, set your memory to Spd, and turn off memory acceleration and set performance mode to "Standard". If that solves the problem, try it with memory acceleration on. That's all I can find on Google. Perhaps someone with more skill with the NVidia chipset could be of more assistance. I've heard a lot of people are having problems getting their cards to run 8X, but I wouldn't know how to change that before you install:? Also, see if they have any beta drivers out for the card, just in case the drivers you're installing don't support the 865 chipset since it's still pretty ne. I probably haven't been much help, I'm sorry.

Thanks Slammy1...... I'll try it in the morning. I have tried some of the bios changes that you suggested, but have not tried changing the FSB speed. I'm going to sleep on it. If I can not get it to work, I'll try installing XP and see if that helps.

Thanks again...

Wow thanks mister smarty man, you are a god of computer knowledgre.

Whenever I set RAS-to-CAS delay to 2 and reboot I kept a corrupt BIOS. The message is something like "BIOS is corrupt, please insert CDROM or floppy disk with backup BIOS". If I power down and disconnect the ATX power connector, and power up a while later I get no VGA response but I can see the computer seeking the CD and FDD so I know it's trying to auto-recover.

That is a corrupt BIOS.

Different revisions of the BIOS on other mainboards (P4C800, there is even variation among the P4P800) have allowed for different memory timings, it is possible.

Also why would I have to re-flash 1006? Writing 1007 doesn't erase the part of the BIOS that contains the BIOS recovery feature, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to recover from a disk and would have had to try hotflash.

I got my Kingston KHX3500K2/512 (2x256) today, and after putting them in, the temps for the motherboard went from the usual 22-24C to a steady 31C ;. After configuring around in the BIOS and rebooting several times I got a message saying that the RADEON 9700 BIOS is corrupt during the boot process, I couldn't get back into BIOS anymore and kept getting the same message. After powering off and leaving it and turning it back on things were still the same, after the second time, it said my BIOS was corrupt and then I pushed F1 to enter BIOS with defaults, and now things seem okay... This is freaking me out... I hope there isn't anything wrong with the video card, it cost a lot for me.

While I'm at it, how do I get the external clock in sync with the ram frequency? I tried to up the external clock to 216 and set ram frequency to 'Auto', after booting into windows and checking cpu-z, it says that may ram is running at a mere 144 MHz. How do I get the 1:1 ratio? Do I have to set ram frequency to 400MHz? I'll try this...

Yes, set the RAM frq to 400 for 1:1 FSB to RAM speed. 216FSB will give 432 DDR. 320 will give a 5:4 ratio, and 233 will give a 3:2. (Auto seems to be setting 3:2, since that would result in 144Mhz, 288DDR RAM freq.)

WHat is the best/most recommended/best cooling heatsink I can put on this mobo (that will actually fit)? And what fan should I add with it for the best air cooling solution. Again that will fit.

Also would it require me to remove the Mobo and remove the stock HSF guide?

Hey Guys,
I will be installing this motherboard in a few days. What is the recommended installation order of the following software?

WinXP
Intel INF
DX9
ATI 3.4
AD1985 Drivers
Onboard LAN
USB 2.0
Intellipoint

Is that right?

Also, as per updating the bios.. I've heard not to use EZFlash. What programs should I put on a floppy and how precisely should i do it? Also, should I flash to the newest 1008? (where can that be found too). THanks
