Are you running the HyperX by SPD or manually setting the timings in BIOS? It could be a few things

a) HyperX with a really aggressive SPD setting. Dual channel on 865/875 based boards is difficult with low latency, the boards are really picky about it, try relaxing the timings

b) Bad RAM, test each stick individually and together with memtest, see if there are errors.

I just used the DEFAULT bios settings, so whatever is the manufacturer's default. I will try memtest on the memory in the other machine.

Thanks

I just ran memtest and it passed fine, i checked the default settings in the bios and it is using the setting....

Configure DRAM Timing by SPD - Enabled.
Memory Acceleration Mode - Enabled.

you think i should change that? and could you let me know what to?

thanks!

set vdimm to 2.75 and timing to 2-2-3-6

also try 2-3-2-6

Why do people insist on tight memory timings before they know
the limit of their cpu and board. Set the most relaxed timing
that you can (eg 3-4-4-8) and use 3:2 ratio to find how high
your cpu and fsb can go. Then tighten up the ratio and timings.

This is a stupid question as i don't know the bios stuff too well, but where do i set these timings? and what does each one represent? Is this all done in the Advanced Chipset bios when i change the configure SPD to manual? Can someone please explain this to me or point me to an article that explains this.

thanks!

Hey,

Yes, you change it from SPD (forget what this stands for, but it contains information on the chip to tell the BIOS what latencies and settings to use regarding the RAM) to manual and then set the timings. I would advise not putting RAS-to-CAS to 2 but instead 3, even if the DIMM is rated at 2, because I personally experienced a corrupt BIOS when trying RAS-to-CAS of 2 (also Corsair, Kingston etc have lowered RAS-to-CAS to 3 instead of 2 on the SPD of their low latency memory since the release of the 865/875 platform).

There is a really good Powerpoint style presentation on everything you need to know about DDR memory over on Corsair's site I believe, if you PM me I will send you the link when I get home since I have it saved in my bookmarks there.

Guys, I need some advice:

I plan to buy (tomorrow, probably) the Following system:

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
Pentium4 2.4c
Gigacube ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128Mb DDR VIVO

The most important question comes ... with memory selection (surprised? )

I'm looking at 2 options here, KINGSTONingly speaking for a total 1Gb Dual DDR:

Kingston HyperX Series 184pin 16B Kit (2x512Mb) DDR433 (PC3500) DDR Ram Modules, Model #KHX3500K2/1G
Latency: CAS Latency 2-3-3-7-1T (on newegg they r listed as 2-2-2-7-1T, which I believe is wrong)

Kingston KVR400X64C3/512 512Mb 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM RAM CL3 (I need 2x of these to make 1Gb)

I plan to stick with 2.4GHz for a while, then latter (this year, maybe start of 2004), make some overclock to squeese the most lifetime of that processor. I'm not an overclock addict , and I don't need to push it too far, I just want a stable system.

So I need your opinion on this matters:

[1] Will I go free of trouble with those memories? Which should I choose, PC3200 or PC3500?

[2] For that future overclock, I initially planned on putting a 250Mhz FSB to have an "equivalent" 3.0c, and set DDR400 to a 4:5 ratio. But what would my best option be if I choose PC3500 instead?

[3] I understand the basics of overclocking of processor, and CPU-MEM ratios, but how does overclock work on memory modules? Can I also change the memory frequency separatly from CPU FSB?

[4] If I put SPD setting on BIOS (to get the default timings for memory installed), will I be able to see those timings on BIOS? (like read-only timings, in gray color or something, you get the idea)

Thanks

mmm

with my p4p800
2*512mb kingston hyperx pc3500 ddr433 ram
p2.6c 800fsb cpu

I have now tried all the memory configurations suggested, I no longer get a bluescreen when trying to install xp or w2k, but I get these intermittent "windows cannot copy file errors" when i install. i have switched the ram with some older stuff (pc2100 2*512mb), and windows xp installs fine. so that seems to prove that everything else is ok, i have also ran memtest on hyperx memory with no problems.... if anyone can help me out here that'd be great, i have almost no hair left !!!

Download goldmemory and put it on a floppy (using a different computer). http://www.goldmemory.cz/ Reset mobo defaults, then set memory to the spds (2-3-3-7-4bank). Run goldmemory test as such (at least several hours, overnight recommended). Report back if there's errors. If no errors, I suggest bumping DDR voltage to 2.75 v, setting to 2-3-3-6-8 bank, then enabling MAM but not turbo, then retesting. What we're trying to do is make sure there's no problems with your memory before we start worrying about the os, drivers, etc. Bumping the voltage seems to help these new intel chipsets a lot.

b4u:

I've been mulling over Kingston RAM for a while now trying to figure out what to buy. Their site says that either KVR400X64C3/512 (3-4-4) or KVR400X64C3A/512 (3-3-3) will work, and they *seem* to say it will work in all four channels at the same time (so you could get up to 2GB in the future if you wanted to).

The PC3500 HyperX will probably work if you screw around with the timings, but I'm not going to bother. I don't have enough RAM experience to play around with it that much. The 1GB kit for that is running $252 currently, compared to $190 for a KVR400X64C3A kit. I just don't see spending $62 extra on RAM when you'll have to relax the timings anyway (see cr0chunter's posts above).

If someone has bought the HyperX and thinks it's worth the money, then feel free to say so. Also, as a general question, is it usually worth the money to buy a RAM kit instead of two individual modules?

Are people having problems with memory recomended by ASUS from their website? IE - Recomended memory for the P4P800 and the P4C800. For some reason, they are not all the same recomended memory.

I wanted to play it more safe than anything and ordered a couple sticks of what they say is approved RAM. I'm hoping that will save me from some pain when setting up the system.

I usually buy individual moduels myself for cost reasons. If it was a wash I'd get 2 tested and perfected chips for my system. Just to have an exact match

Hi,

Looking at the P4P800 Deluxe Manual, on page 4-17 I can see DRAM Frequency with settings: [Auto] [266 MHz][333 MHz][400 MHz]

[1] What if I want to run a PC3500 DDR system? Shouldn't I have [433 MHz] option enabled?

[2] Isn't it possible to overclock memory modules in this board? Like for example put a DDR433 memory pair running at 440MHz (as an example)?

Edit:

[3] Extra question: I'm buying a case with a 340w power supply. Is it enough for this board plus 9600Pro? (I don't have much experience with it, but probably it's just fine, or else they wouldn't sold them )

Thanks

Well, after dealing with Asus tech support on a problem I could get no help from neither here nor on Asus boards, I'm planning on getting rid of this board and buying the Abit. I tried to get support by the net but their response was I have to call their tech support number which is only open during the hours I work and is a long distance phone call. DON'T BUY THIS BOARD. Get the Abit instead. So long as people continue to buy Asus in spite of their lack of tech support, they have no motivation to change. I've been solely an Asus owner for a number of years now, and I don't make this suggestion lightly.

I can't boot from a floppy, it gives me an I/O error. I posted it on here, I thought on page 1. The floppy works fine in Windows, it even ran Memory Gold fine which installs its own OS. I've tried 2 different drives, boot disks created on 3 different machines and operating systems, and it does the same thing. I even downloaded a boot disk from Microsoft and that gives me the same problem. I ran diagnostics on the drive and it reported no problem. I posted a thread in trouble shooting and on the Asus boards and no one could help.

I have a strange problem. After installing this board it seemed that Battlefield 1942 ran slower, alot slower. It turns out if i disabled the sound (in options not bios) it was normal and smooth playing. Whats up with this and how do i fix it?

Is there a location to see the status of your dual channel memory? I am trying to figure out if my memory is actually running in dual channel mode. I have 1 gig of corsair twinx 3700 and everything is up and running but someone else had mentioned on another site that they were looking for a message on the post (something like "Dual Channel, Linear, 400 Mhz") for confirmation but had not seen it. I disabled the asus splash screen on the post but I still don't see parts of the post because it goes by so fast. The most I see is something like "1024 ddr" with no mention of dual channel. Are their any other status pages that show dual channel is functional?

Thanks in advance...
