As I have just read over here, to enable Intel?s Performance Acceleration Technology on ASUS P4P800 and other mainboards based on the same i865PE chipset you need to perform the following steps:

Enter BIOS setup utility;
Select ?Advanced? menu;
Select ?Chipset? configuration;
Enabled Memory Acceleration Mode;
Your system is now PAT ready

Anybody know where I can obtain the 1005 bios file? Asus sites do NOT have them.

*Edit* - NM, I will just copy the original off the motherboard to floppy. Duh.

Okay, this is gonna drive me nuckin futz. I bought Geil PC3500 modules to go in this board because I read in another forum that the P4P800 MANUAL lists GeIL PC3200 modules as compatible. Usually a manufacturer's PC3500 modules will work in boards where their PC3200 modules will work, since PC3500 is not an official JDEC specification. Now that I bought the board and the memory, Asus pulls a switch and I'm stuck...

Well, I'll give it a shot anyway. I ordered my 2.4C at the same time, but its not here yet. As soon as I have it, I'll report my results (assuming I haven't been hauled off by the little men in their clean white coats after trying to get all this crap straight....)

EDIT: Asus lists a BIOS update as available as of today on this support site: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/support.aspx

Its not listed as available on the US site, but the TW site is a little hincky and not working at all for me in either IE or Netscape.

@ Revolutionary:

The manual actually lists Geil Dimms, no idea why they are not on the website. BTW I think I might go for Apacer Memory since this Brand seems like 100% compatible, and its again 10 Euro less in price.

P.S: Just had a look at the updated manual, the list there is the same as on the website.

Expansion Slots
- 1 x AGP 8X/4X (0.8V, 1.5V only)

Can someone explain the difference to me?

In my opinion they were too lazy to type a couple of extra numbers. I think they meant 1.5v (Agp4x) and no higher for the P4P800.

Well, seeing as I won't get my processor until June 4 or 5, and I can't return the memory I bought after June 3 without a restocking fee, I sent an email to Asus asking them to tell me if I should exchange the memory for another brand. I told them that if they don't get back to me by June 3, I'm sending the P4P800 back and buying a Gigabyte. !!

PAT is 'fake' inasmuch as there is no specific new technology that comprises PAT.
The PAT supporting 875P chipset is are merely the best binning chips in the 865/875 line.
Those chips are able to handle slightly tighter memory timings then then others.
PAT is merely a marketing name to signify the tighter timings those chips are capable of.

Asus claims are that they can provide the same tight memory timings that I875 chipset can provide on their 865PE line.
Benchmarks have shown such claims are indeed true as the P4P800 does seem to exhibit performance similar to I875 based boards.

Hi there,

I have been reading these forums for a while but this is my first post on it.

I have today just received my P4P800 Duluxe motherbaord along with a P4 2.4 (800fsb) processor and 2 512MB DDR400 Geil ram chips. I have not put everything together yet, but I hope that I will have no trouble with the Geil memory.

What is interesting about the board that I got is that the heatsink in the center of the board right next to the AGP slot is not angled like the other P4P800 boards that I have seen pictured on the web and in the manual. It is angled straight just like the P4C800 board. It definitely is a P4P800 board becuase it says so on the motherboard itself.

That's good, cause there are a lot of imitations around .

I understand why they put the heat sink there, but I could also see it interfering with a longer video card.

i think ;the angled heatsinks were moved to that position by the owner to allow them to use a video card cooling solution.

Some P4P800 information for yas all.

Using a 2.53C1 cpu @ 175fsb for initial testing @ default 1.525vcore. Vdimm at 2.55 (lowest), and Vagp at 1.55 (lowest)

Flashed to 1006 bios as anything between 150fsb and 200fsb won't post with 1005 bios that came with the motherboard.

175fsb, 2-2-2-6-4 (auto/auto), MAM=Auto, sisoft 4227, aida32 4194(read)/1254(write)
175fsb, 2-2-2-6-4 (auto/auto), MAM=Enabled, sisoft 4258, aida32 4365(read)/1371(write)

MAM (Memory Acceleration Mode - ie: memory turbo set in the AMI bios)
These are just single runs, so they could vary.

Oh BTW, anyone with Swiftech MCX4000s, forget about using the cpu fan header. There is about 1mm of clearance between it and the heatsink, and definately no room for the 3pin fan header plug. I am using the case fan header now. Oh well, minor annoyance.

Yes it will work with the ASUS P4C800 but we are not suggesting this module set for any Canterwood or Springdale chipset. We would suggets our CMX512-3500C2 or CM64SD512-3200 as the modules to use with any MB with this chipset

Getting my P4P800 and 2 sticks of CMX512-3200C2 on Monday!

My question is should I send it back for some 2 x CMX512-3500C2 or will that not make that big of a difference?

UPDATE: just found this post and I'm in the same boat to me it sounds like I should upgrade to the 3500 modules rather than the 3200 but I very newbie at this arg!

So I put it up to you all here what should I do?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT:

UPDATE: I just called Newegg and this is what they suggested. Fill out an online RMA before 7 day from order date and I will get 14 days to get it sent back (7 day return policy on memory). Test the memory I have out if I like it keep it no returns. Plus the bonus I can set up my system this weekend and will not have any down time if I upgrade to the 3500. 15% restocking fee but since I would be getting new memory they will wave the restocking fee. Newegg is the bomb!!! Now I can test it out and get some info for this thread to WOOT!!

Lesson learned: Newegg is the real deal!!

Oh wait I guess no fun this weekend I dont dare set this up with a 300w psu better wait come monday and my new 550w

Which would likely provide better performance?

Two sticks of 256MB Kingston KVR400X64C25/256 for $94

or

Two sticks of 512MB Kingston KVR400X64C3/512 for $145

or

I didn't put down the Kingston KVR400X64C25/512 option because the ASUS compatibility list flat out says that it won't work in dual channel configuration. I wonder if that means the KVR400X64C3/512 won't either?

@shinyhalo

It really depends on wether you are going to actually use that extra 512mb, if you rarely touch it then the lower latency may be of better use, but I would say the chances are you will probably use it. Especially if you are a gamer and defintely if you play games like BF1942 or Simcity4, or simply use lots of apps (and XP).

Also thinking of the future, are you likely keep this rig for the next couple of years or are you the kind of person that upgrades regularly, if its for keeps, def go with a gig. In fact, the benefit from .5 in latency will be so small I would go with the gig regardless. there is a thread here, have a search, you'll find a few other bits on the forums.

How does the on board sound perform ?

I currently have a SB Live! value, will this be far better than what's on board ?

I understand that the on board sound is software based, so this will take up lots more cpu power then the SB Live! value, right ?
