re hard drive boot issues

Make sure the Hard Disk priority is established correctly in the Boot section of the BIOS. this can be a tiny thing that causes many HD boot / not boot / menu pops up issues...

check this menu also if you drives aren't being recognized as bootable.. the SATA bus defaults to much lower than the CD drives or the ATA bus.

Is it possible to use just 1 hard drive in JBOD mode with the VIA VT6410 on the P4P800 Deluxe?

Thanks

i have posted this on overclockers forum...just want to see if anyone have any other suggestions....

The sound is audible when nothing is played and i put on my earphones. There is always this cracking sound in the background and if LAN is utilize or there's HDD activity or cpu's load increases, then i would hear a combination of droning, screeching and cracking sound.

I was using the 3630 driver and found a thread claiming that there is the 3713 version on asus's FTP and it solved the problem. I installed it but did not help at all. I was wondering what can cause this problem.

Also....just to mention (again if i've said it)...the problem doesn't not occur while the computer is still booting in dos mode...Once it reaches XP, and the "Welcome screen" comes...that is when the problem occurs. Now, i have a question....the onboard sound gets initialized at that point by the driver right? In my BIOS setting, i have PNP OS disabled meaning that all device will turn on and not controlled by XP. If there was a problem with the hardware itself, i would have heard the sound right from the beginning right?

i am also getting random popping sound from playing mp3s...some ppl refer this to the driver, but i have already tried different versions of the driver and it did not improve.

Put a new system together, parts listed below, and I just wanted a bounce this off you guys to see if you can see why whenever I run a game after about 3 mins or so come artifacts start showing up and then the video just locks up. Has anyone had issues with a similar setup?

P4P800 Deluxe
P4 3.0C
Mushkin 1 GB|PC3200 Dual kit x2
Windows XP
Leadtek WinFast A380 Ultra TDH ( 5950 ultra )

No other cards installed. New OS installed 2 times. Only happens in 3d applications. Latest Video drivers used as well as the ones that came with the video card. Default BIOS settings.

Please Advise and thanks in advance.

Yes. It is possible to use just one hdd with the via 6410 controller. I have an ata133 160 gig hdd on port 1 of the pRaid controller and no other hadd in my system. I just did not set it up in raid mode. Gives you ata133 speed without raid. You just have to add the via raid driver to XP. (get the latest one from Via).

I'm trying to overclock a little but I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly. When I go into AI Overclocking Tuner and set it to manual I am only able to increase the CPU External Frequency to 200. I have dram freq at 400 and agp/pci freq: 66.66/33.33; cpu vcor voltage: 1.525; DDR ref voltage 2.85 and agp vddq voltage: 1.6. Performance mode is Auto.

How do I gradually increase the CPU Ext. Freq. 5mhz at a time? It is not manually configurable. I thought this was how I was suppose to try to overclock the FSB. If I click on AI Overclock Tuner I have the options to increase the overclock 5% then 10%, 20% and 30%. Since I can't seem to manually set the FSB 5mhz at a time and test with memtest, I tried the overclock 5% option. Is this how the overclocking is done?

thanks

highlight cpu external frequency and press ur "+" "-" sign on the numberpad. That will increase/decrease the FSB...

That's the first thing I did. It isn't working. The manual does say "The value of this item is auto-detected by BIOS and is not manually configurable." I just realized I posted this to the wrong forum. Oops. I have the p4c800dlx. The P4p and p4c are the same bios manufacturer, right? If so, rather than double post, I'll leave this post here.

Okay,

I've had this board for a month now, no problems so far. Had no idea that memory was such an issue with this board, and just used the same memory I had from my last machine (2 x Kingmax 3200 DDR 400 512MB for 1 Gig total -- installed on the blue slots). Worked fine, but I am not an OC'er.

Now, looking at improving the RAM situation. My questions are:

1 - I've seen posted a couple times in this thread, that filling all 4 slots with 512 MB DDR 400 RAM will not work with this board. Then I see buried in there a couple folks saying that they have all 4 slots filled. Will this work?

2 - If I want to go this route, am I better off buying 4 brand new sticks, or can I still use my existing 2 sticks, even though they won't be identical to the other two (that will reside in the black slots).

3 - When people talk about memory not working with this board, is that only when settings are changed to OC, or is there a risk with this board for lock-ups etc. even when leaving all the memory timings in the BIOS to Auto?

Sorry if this post is rather n00bish, but...I'm a n00b.

Thanks,
G

Well for memory it'd depend on your o/c desires. Whatever you choose, check out the memory manufacturer's recommended configs. Given Asus' (lack of) tech support, it's important the they list it as compatable. A couple of suggestions for popular memory (for tight timings/good o/c), Mushkin Lvl II PC3500 and OCZ PC3700 LE Platinum. I'd say try to stick with 2 DIMMS if possible, but 4 will only slow you down and not flat out stop you (assuming they're OK in a 4XDIMM config as recommended by the memory mfr.).

For OS install, this is an excellent guide:
OPERATING SYSTEM / SOFTWARE INSTALLATION GUIDE

ABX is probably the top source for non-specific issues on this board, though a word of warning you're not allowed to talk bad about Asus (well you can, but risk probable flamage).

Again, the soundcard is problematic in terms of pops and hisses with earlier drivers, but that goes away with later drivers (almost always). If you're still seeing problems, make sure your AGP/PCI bus are locked at 66/33.

Another good link, one I use and it works well (though benefits vary based on board version, you'll almost always see an improvement):
So you want PAT with a P4P800 over 200fsb...Here's how..
It really works, but I have a 35 series MoBo so I get better performance with this hack than the later boards.

just to refer to the lock of AGP/PCI. On day one that i got the motherboard, i did have it locked at 66/33. Therefore that is not the problem. As a sidenote...when i installed the very first version available from asus which is 3581, there will be a screeching sound emitted from inside the case. It is more apparent if i take the cover off. That driver did not have an effect on the hissing/cracking part(although a person on overclockers forum who has the Intel 865PERL which uses the soundmax also said that version fixed the problem). I proceeded with installing the next higher one which should be 3583 or something. That took away the screeching sound from the motherboard. While the noise problem remains up to 3713.

Since I bought the board when it came out, I opted for a brown bag Audigy solution soon after due to that issue. It was perhaps 1-2 mo. later that I read about the fix. Is it possible you're getting a ground loop? Do you have any 2-pronged plugs hooked into that outlet,? Some sort of voltage regulator might help out the condition, though again I replaced the on-board early on so my troubleshooting of issues with it are limited.

no...i just plug in sony/panasonic earphones into the green jack...
I'm still trying to find a way to fix it
if i have time, i will take apart the whole comp again, just leave out my mobo on a cardboard and try it that way...
if that still doesn't work, i'm gonna rma the board...hopefully they'll accept it without the original box
lol

Well, a ground loop would be on the same electrical circuit as the computer, not a ground fault in the computer itself. A friend had a similar problem with an incorrectly wired outlet, and it wasn't the plug for the computer but the one above it. Usually ground loops take the form of buzzing, so I'm probably just grabbing at straws by mentioning it. Basically, on an incorrectly grounded circuit the computer itself can serve as a ground, which causes a background noise of a characteristic frequency.

Hello,

I just recently received my P4P800 in the mail and installed my P4 3GHZ with it. Now I have run some Sandra Memory Benchmarks on it and I am getting very low scores. Around 2700MB/Sec. Is there anything I am missing.

I am using PC3200 Memory at Cas 2.5 Should I try for tighter timings?

Sorry for the delay in response. I don't get to the board as much as I used to.

For the ground loop, try removing all non-essential plugs from the surge protector if you're using one, in fact if it's getting old you might consider a replacement. Try a different electrical outlet. It's at least an easy fix, and I have seen the problem occur on a friend's system.

For the memory problem (2700 in Sandra), sounds like you're not running dual channel. For dual channel, or DCM, you need 2 DIMMS of the same type (for best results, same mfr, size, model, and binning though you might get away with slight DIMM differences) in the matched slots on the board. If you notice, there are 2-blue and 2-black slots and you need to populate the same color slots (which are not side by side). If one color doesn't work, try the other. If neither work, make sure both DIMMs are working (put in 1 at a time).

i've take off the power cable from the surge protector and plug it to the wall outlet directly...but it did not fix the problem...

I went back and reread your initial post, and it definitely seems driver/software related.

A couple of things to check/try. Make sure your mic is muted, and try reducing the volume on the wav sound out. I'd install at least 1014 or higher BIOS (some sound fixes in that one). I've read that memory can cause these sorts of problems, you might run memtest (advanced tests) to make sure it's stable. It may be a PCI/AGP bandwidth issue also. Try reinstalling your video drivers, and though it sounds weird try increasing your VAGP.

The SoundMax is a poorer quality device, you might consider an upgrade to an A2 or Revo. Sorry that I'm not knowledgable on the on-board.

I've also thought of this as a driver issue, as i do not hear the noise until XP is started. I have 1015, with all the sound settings tried before. I've ran memtest before for 24 hrs(i have Kingston ram). My PCI/AGP is locked at 33/66. I've tried to reinstall my video driver or tried earlier versions, but it did not help. I installed a fresh copy of XP 2 months ago, with all the new drivers, but this issue did not go away. In addition, not many people have complained about the soundmax from what i've seen on different forums. This could just be a rare case that my soundmax is defective and quite sensitive at picking up any noise in the PCI bus(HDD, network, USB).

I had the same problem with a slight oc. The problem was that with the DRAM Frequency set to Auto, it used a 3:2 divider. Changing this setting to 400 MHz gives you a 1:1 divider. This brought the bandwidth benchmark scores up to where they should be. THis setting is in the bios Advanced menu.

You can check for this in the bandwidth benchmark test. Look at the "Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks". The "Speed" will be the same as your FSB if the divider is 1:1. Or you can use CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download) to check your FSB and DRAM settings.
