Does the latest BIOS rev of the P4P800 support the setting of the temperature when Q-fan kicks the CPU fan into full speed operation? The manual says you can select the speed of the fan at cooler temps, but doesn't let you set the threshold temp like the IS7 does. But this may have gotten fixed in a recent BIOS, hence my question.

The reason I ask is that I want to use this to control the 120mm fan on a radiator so I can have very quiet operation at typical loads but still provide maximum cooling under high loads.

Thanks,
Frob

Got a dilemma... My comp has an Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard and a WD360 Raptor (SATA) drive running WinXP... Everything's been great until installing a new Maxtor 120GB (ATA133) that I want to setup as my D-drive. I have tried connecting it as the Master drive to the board's Primary IDE channel as well as on the onboard Promise ATA133 controller. Regardless of where I connect it, there is no D-drive reported by the system (althouth the BIOS does recognize it)!

I would sure appreciate some help!

I am using 2 512mb 3200 HyperX with relatively few problems. I am running with 2-3-3-6 right now although according to some other posts it may work fine at 2-3-2-5. Turbo mode does not work for me and it is my understanding that turbo mode basically changes the timings to the most aggressive which in this case would be 2-2-2-5 which I can assure you will not work. Also I am unable to get MAM working and I believe this is due to the memory, maybe it would work with less aggressive memory timings. Bios 1008 and I'm not overclocking anything.

Have you formatted and partitioned the disk? If not, your comp wont recognize it.

Does anyone have a recommendation on memory? I want a gig, and I dont want to have any issues with it and want it to be maintenance free. Willing to spend about $250. Any ideas?

If you aren't planning to do serious overclocking, I would recommend some Corsair XMS 3200 RAM. If you want a little fast RAM, you can go for the low-latency modules, but those cost a little more. You can also get higher speed (3500 or 3700) RAM but unless you plan to overclock, 3200 will be perfect for your needs.

Well I was planning on 3200, but wasnt planning on overclocking. Is it definitely recommended? How hard is it to do?

Does the operating system not see it? What OS are you using? In XP and 2000 Pro, you can go into the computer manager through administrative tools. Then go into disk management and it should list your drives there. If it lists the new drive, right click on it and go to change letter. Im pretty sure this works, but havent had to do it in a while.

Hello All,

I'm a first time builder and am in the process of trying to connect my case wiring to my mobo. Here is the system I have and a few questions also.

I have:
Antec Sonata w/380w PSU
P4 2.8c Retail (comes with heatsink and fan)
P4P800 Deluxe mobo (have no clue where all the front connectors from the case goes)
2 x 512mb CORSAIR MEMORY XMS PC-3200C2PT With Platinum - Silver Heat Spreader
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb (had to budget somewhere)
Audigy 2 OEM
1 WD1200 SE 120mb 7200 rpm 8mb cache (yes, I know...probably should have gone SATA)
Liteon 48x24x48x16 CD/DVD/RW LTC-4816H
Samsung Floppy Drive

Questions:

1) When connecting the front panel USB to the motherboard, do you use the USB-56 or USB-78 pins? (Antec Sonata Case to Asus P4P800).

2) Also, from the front panel of my Antec Sonata case I have a cable that has seven connectors (mic, micbias, aud gnd, fpout-l, fpout-r, ret-r and ret-l). I can't determine where they plug into the board. I'm not using the onboard sound, I'm using an Audigy 2 soundcard. Do you know where these plug into?

I'm hoping this memory is going to work with this board. After reading this thread, I'm dizzy and confused.

Thanks.

Scott

Well to answer your first question 5&6 are for USB ports 5&6. Unless you need 8 USB ports I would just use PORTS 5&6 AND set the BIOS to read 6 USB ports active and 7&8 would be disabled. 7&8 would be useful only if you needed the 7th and 8th USB ports which I doubt.

As far as the other 7 wire connector to the front of the panel, you need to look in your manual to find the header on the board that takes the Mic connections and connect them there.

Thanks for the response regarding the USB. I have been checking the manual for both the motherboard and Antec Sonata case, but am still confused.

By the way, should both of the RAM sticks be in the black or blue slots? One person told me black and then I read earlier in the thread that it should be blue for a 800mhz FSB.

BINK472,
Look at page 2-32 item 14 in your manual for the audio connections to the board for the onboard sound card. If you are using another sound card, you will have to check the manual for that card. If you are not going to use the front audio jacks (like me), roll them up out of the way.

bink472,

The Antec Sonata front audio cable doesn't have the same labels as the ones in the manual. They are actually incorrectly labeled. Somebody [ http://pavlovsfish.editthispage.com/2003/03/01 ] made a guide for the sake of anybody else trying to hook up the front panel audio on an Antec Sonata. Read the guide and use trial and error, and make sure the left and right connections are correctly connected, since they are actually reversed.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,

I have the same setup as above. The Asus p4p800 with the Antec Sonada case. Great Motherboard, I love it.

My only problem is that my agp 8x card, the radeon 9500 pro is detected as 4x. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve the issue?

I haven't updated the bios but would that resolve the prob? I've changed it to 8x in the display window but it simply resets back after I restart.

Any help would be appreciated. Anybody with similar problems? thanks in advance

MAM only works by default at 1:1 (reported as Performance Mode in cpuZ). There is some BIOS hack posted at abxzone.com that will force partial/full PAT/MAM at all settings but I wouldn't play with it.

I too have P4P800 and a Sonata, seems really common

So far I am satisfied with XMS 3500 RAM (2 x 512).

I had the same problem about the Radeon 9500 pro being detected only as a AGP 4x one. I was living with it. But then when I installed the catalyst 3.5 drivers, the card started showing up as AGP 8x. Sandra also confirms it as 8x. May be you should try that. I followed the instructions given by ATI in their website about driver installation.

Did you have to do any changes in settings to get your RAM to work out properly?

Did you notice any improvement in 3dmark scores or anything else after updating the driver? I have installed catalyst 3.5 but it's detecting at 4x. Is there anything else you did which could have changed the results. I'm wondering weather to worry about it or not.

Thanks for the help!

Bink,

Asus recommends using the blue slots first if you are using dual channel. I have seen it posted several times but I have also read it from the motherboard manual.

THANK YOU, for that link to Pavlov. I was not able to figure out the wiring, those diagrams really help! I will move my memory chips back to the blue slots. I'm still waiting for my HD and my Video Card so I haven't been able to turn my machine on yet to see if everything works.

Thanks again!

I have seen in the forums something regarding only certain revisions of the ATI Radeon board will work with the Asus P4P800 Deluxe board. Well, I just received my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and I can't find a revision number. Do you guys know where it's located on the card and what revision version works with the board?

All I see is a PN number stamped on my board. PN 109-A03400-00

Also, I noticed people talking about their CPU temps, etc. Where and how do I check my temp ratings and what are good/safe ratings to have?

Thanks in advance.

I've seen several people in various forums say that the black slots actually have slightly lower latencies than the blue slots... but it probably wouldn't make a huge difference either way.

Liteon 48x24x48x16 CD/DVD/RW LTC-4816H
Samsung Floppy Drive
Win XP Pro

Okay, I have my computer up and running. Currently I have not messed with my BIOS at all or even updated it.

Here are the questions:
1) Should I update my bios to the latest?
2) How do I verify that I'm running in Dual Mode for my memory?
3) How do I verify the my video card is running 8xagp?
4) Should I change any of the timings and voltage for my memory, if so how and to what?
5) What else should I be looking for to make sure I'm okay?

Thanks in advance for helping a new guy out!

Thanks,

Scott
