I'm building my system this week and am wondering if some of you would confirm what I'm planning to set in my BIOS. I have to admit, I don't completely understand what all these settings mean, even after reading this whole thread as well as most of the ones linked to from here (such as at Overclockers and Xtreme Systems).

My system includes a P5B Deluxe, E6600 and 2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2/1000 5-5-5-15. Do these settings all look good for a solid overclock? (I'm particularly unsure about the CPU Frequency, the DRAM Frequency and the memory settings...)

Here's my issue.. I tried 3 different boards with my e6300. First was an ECS el-cheapo, wouldnt post no matter the config. I have 2 different ddr2 ram chips, one is a mushkin ddr2-533 3-3-3-10, the other is generic ddr2-667. Neither would post. Fans came on, but nothing else happened. Next motherboard was the Asus P5N-SLI. Would ONLY post when my IDE hdd is hooked up. When I plugged in the cd-rom to the 2nd ide port, no post. Weird. Also, it would only post even with just the hdd in about half the time, again which ram chip i had in didnt matter. However, when it did post, half way into loading windows XP sp2 it would blue screen for half a second then reboot. Lastly is the P5B. Posted 1st time, either or both rams in. BUT - same problem with the rebooting during boot. The hdd is fine, as i put it in my old system and i'm typing on it now ANY ideas??? Thanks a million!

@excalibur

Sounds like it has something to do with the fact that you using IDE, far as i know IDE is not supported on intel p965 chipset, board makers have to add it, try looking in your bios for the IDE settings and try fiddling with those (i'm not familiar with them on p965), alternatively beg steal or borrow a SATA drive and see if that solves your problem

o and you might also try a bios update, you'd need a bootable stiffy/cdrom

@juryduty

whoa! you can't dive in head first like that, you'll hit the bottom and break your neck

chances are setting everything all at the same time with untested settings will end up not booting....

start like we all do, get the system running at stock everything and make sure its stable
then pick one component, i always start with the cpu, and tweak it until it stops being stable (forcpu its fsb x multiplier + vcore), then hold onto those settings and start tweaking the next component...

I just flashed the bios to the latest and tried all the settings related to IDE in the bios, no luck. Still reboots after loading a certain driver even going into safe mode. Guess I'll have to get a SATA drive, although its retarded to have an IDE port there that I cant use to boot from :/

Hi excalibur,

Earlier this year my system started rebooting at random times and after removing one part after another I still didn't narrow it down. I eventually figured the mobo was at fault even though I didn't see any bad caps or anything. Well, I built out the system and all seemed fine for a while. Then the random reboots started again. I tracked the problem down to a faulty drive cable.

Have you tried this?

Richard,

Thanks for the idea, as with the old boards there was one of my cables it wouldnt even post with. I did try 3 different cables for it, all do the same thing and reboot at the same spot during loading with this board

Hi,
Just a quick survey. What is the highest stable FSB you guys got with the Deluxe board (I have the Wifi)?
I am stuck around 475...

I'm having real trouble with this piece of ****. Why didn't I just buy a rig rather than insist on building another one! Here goes, hit power on and the case fans turn slightly, the blue Asus led flashes red then returns to blue. Nothing else happens.

Spec:
P5b delux wifi/ap
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400
Antec SP-500PGB
HD is an IDE - awaiting sataII.

Tried Asus support, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to respond.

Someone tell me what to buy and I will!

Barry

Sounds similar to my problems. Try moving the memory stick to another slot, then turn back on. Also try raising memory voltage to 2.1. Also, try unplugging any cdrom and floppys. Then maybe it'll at least post for you as it did for me. Still can't load windows on mine though...

So now I go and get a SATA-II drive. Plug it in. Bios detects it no problem. So, I put in my Windows XP SP2 Install CD - loads a bunch of drivers to get ready to install, then boom, blue screen. Gives me some "stop error" And so the frustration sets in. Any ideas???

Thanks excaliburh2k, I've tried swapping ram, also tried it with only cpu installed. I've also tried booting outside of the case and clearing the cmos. How do I alter the memory voltage without getting into the BIOS?

You can't. I was just thinking of if you do get it to post That's the only thing I can think of - and make sure both the 24-pin and the 4-pin power supply are connected. Other than that.. well i'm no expert anyways mine isnt even running yet!

Thanks anyway excaliburh 2k. If I don't get any solution by the end of the weekend I'm just going to start sending things back, I don't have time to be wasting on things like this. Good luck with your problem.

Ok I think I have a solution for both barry and excal:

IF you are using an ASUS mobo with an Antec Neo power supply: there is a known compatibility issue that both Antec and ASUS know about.

You can get your power supply RMA'd thru Antec directly, and they'll send you a replacement ps that is "fixed" somehow to deal with the compatibility problem.

I've had this exact problem and discovered, this morning, a FAQ on the Antec site clarifying the incompatibility. Go to www.antec.com and look under the Neo line of power supplies, then click to the FAQ section in product support.

Hope that helps! One of the less lucky moments of my PC-building history.

I was just about to suggest to Barry what realtrance did. I have had 3 different Antec Neo HE PSUs and all were incompatible with my ATI All In Wonder 9800 Pro. If I disconnected the power connector from the video card the system would try to boot but then fail because the video card required the power connector. If I tried to boot with it connected to the video card the system fans would whir for a second and the system would fail beyond that.

My solution was quite seredipitous because I was looking to build a new system anyway, I now run a completely different rig with a Neo HE 550 (same one that didn't like my ATI card) and it works wonderfully.

Asus Probe and Speedfan report my CPU temp to 88c!
But the TAT reports both cores around 54-50c.... Usually, the CPU temp on PCProbe is close to what TAT reports, but for some reason, temp jump.
I know that the problem is gone when restarted. But this time, I let it run for a while to see if it resolve itself...
Anybody experience this problem?

Thanks for your suggestions guys, I found out what the problem was, Antec SP-500PGB psu is faulty, it couldn't even power up an old P4 which is currently powered by a 180w psu. So, I found a Tagan 600W dual engine. I wouldn't recommend it in a P180 case - very snug fit, cannot use lower fan, but I'm writing this using the new pc, so I am happy. I hope excaliburh2k finds a solution to his problem.

hey xcalibur, sorry for the late reply, got caught up in a trance party

did you try the abovementioned psu solution? it sounds to me like that could be it
, i remember when i got my current nf4 board and sata was still new i had problems getting the drive to work but i never got the BSOD during install, are you certain all your bios settings are default? and check your memory timings, if they're not the same as the manufacturer's quoted ones then your system might crash as soon as too much ram is used too quickly, like an unstable overclock

other than that i dunno

lemme know!

hi
You have chosen SATA as AHCI or RAID in Bios?
If you want to bypass this 'problem' (eg you dont have fdd) then switch SATA to IDE in bios.
If you want AHCI or RAID then you have to create a floppy disk with the drivers of intel (or jmicron if you have placed hdd there) ....
How to create such disk? Either in another pc use http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts...&ProductID=2529&DwnldID=12094&lang=eng to create a floppy disk with intel's drivers Or (easier, but you have to choose to boot in cdrom 1st) insert Asus CDROM in dvd/cd player... and after it boots choose the appropriate option and create a floppy with the chosen drivers.
After you have created the floppy disk, insert Windows XP cd and reset.
In the beginning you should press F6 when it is mentioned .
After a few moments you will have to choose the right driver from the floppy disk ....
choose it and everything is ok
the installation will continue

If you have installed in AHCI mode then you can change anytime at Bios in IDE and AHCI etc .... without installing windows again.
If you install windows in IDE then you cannot change in AHCI without new install.... so think before you proceed

I've a question for you....
My Geil DDR2 memory is currently running at 800MHz on my Asus P5B Deluxe board. I haven't overclocked the FSB (266Mhz), so my memory/fsb ratio is 2:3.
If i was to Decrease my memory speed to 533MHz, I would achieve a ratio of 1:1.
Is there any benefit in running the memory at higher speeds without overclocking the FSB? Am I wasting my time, as the bottleneck will still be the FSB speed of 266MHz?
Is a 1:1 ratio the optimum setting?

Hey, I'm going to be buying a motherboard soon, and I'm debating what I should get: P5B or P5B-E?
I know that the -E has FireWire, which is not essential to my life. I also know it costs about $30 more CAD. So I was wondering, what are the differences between the P5B and P5B-E, overclocking-wise? Is any one stronger than the other, or about the same?

1:1 is most definitely not optimal in your situation.

Bandwidth is huge for C2D systems, even when OCing.

Keep it at DDR2-800 till you start OCing; then lower to 1:1 for OCing.
