For people with the P5B non deluxe version, They released the 308 bios whichh allows up to 650 FSB from the original 400

Just FYI, a wierd thing happend to me the last couple of days. I have the P5B Deluxe Wi-Fi and am using G.Skill ram at the moment (2GB) with an E6600 CPU. A couple of nights ago, I was able to install the OS but then when I flashed the bios to the most recent one on the Asus website, I couldn't get the system to post after the reboot. I thought about how to deal with it yesterday, and when I got home, I took out both DIMMS and hit the power button. I managed to get a blinking cursor. I reinstalled one of the DIMMS into channel A DIMM 1, powered on, and got the OS to initialize (in safe mode first, then normally the second reboot). Feeling emboldened by my progress, I reinstalled the 2nd DIMM into channel B DIMM 1 and turned the system on. This time, it worked. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work before I did this wierd thing with the RAM, but I have it going now. I did go ahead and order some Corsair memory as I feel like that will be a little more stable and is just better memory in general (Corsair TwinX2 6400C4). I just don't like the fact that the other memory was making the system do wierd stuff. If anyone has any idea why a system would behave this way, feel free to comment.

Here's something that it would be helpful if people with this board tried:

1. Set a CPU ratio of 6.0 (requires the latest BIOS with unlocked multiplier).

2. Set a memory divider of 1:1 (i.e DDR2-533 if your FSB is at 266 MHz).

3. Choose an FSB setting in the 360 to 400 MHz range. Hopefully this will leave your CPU and RAM near (or even below) their rated speeds.

4. Boot to windows, open SuperPi (or prime95, or whatever you're preferred stress-testing app is), and run the '8M' (or higher) benchmark, and report back whether or not is is stable.

...I'm asking about this because there appears to be a glitch that is preventing the board from reaching high FSB speeds, even when the CPU and RAM are not being overclocked, so I want to see if it's a common problem, and where it typically starts to kick in (I've heard reports of as low as 310 MHz and as high as 380 MHz...on my board it's about 350 MHz).

Basically, if I set my CPU multiplier to 6.0, and my RAM to 1:1, and my FSB to 360 MHz, the system is not at all stable, and increasing the FSB just causes it to become increasingly unstable. Note that the settings described would clock my CPU at 2.16 GHz and my RAM at DDR2-720. My CPU is rated for 2.4 GHz (E6600 Conroe) and my RAM is rated for DDR2-800, so these settings should not be a problem. Using higher multipliers coupled with lower FSB settings, I have verified that my CPU is stable to (at least) 3.0 GHz at stock voltages, and my RAM is stable to DDR2-1000, so like I said, there's no reason why the settings above should have been unstable, unless the board is just unable to cope wit hthe higher FSB settings for some reason.

I tried this experiment of yours. 6multiplyer 400mhz fsb. The first thing I noticed was that the CPU volt jumped to 1.58. Ran 2 instances of FAH for 100% CPU loading for a few minutes, temps were gettin close to 60 rapidly, so i chickened out. I then lowered the CPu voltage to 1.3ish and the FSB droped itself to 330. I suppose it would work if i had better cooling and ram, but i'm not an oc'r

Mclendo86;

Did you clear the cmos, by removing the battery, and use the jumper, as per the manual, after doing the bios update? I think that's your problem. Hope this helps

I have a asus p5b deluxe motherboard.

I purchased a pentium D 915 which i recently RMA'd.

I RMA'd the processor because the temperature was at a very high 80 degrees celsius on average. Ranging from 76C to 83C and at a one time extreme of 110C (which i immediatly turned the pc off).

The heatsink was warm->hot to the touch. So the heatsink was properly seated.

After RMA'ing the cpu because i thought that the processor was defective i am concerned that it might be the motherboard that should be RMA'd.

I've nevered heard of the problem being the motherboard overheating the processor. But ...

Has anyone experienced this problem where the processor was really hot at 80C and RMA'd the motherboard and worked fine after receiving a replacement?

Dude mine with e6600 also idles around 40C
I did everything I could but no luck. I kinda gave up now and just watch the temp here and there. It never went over 48C.
If anyone could tell me a solution for it, it would be very appreciated.

Does anyone hear use this memory with this board? I would like to have a little more assurance that it will work so that I only have to RMA to NewEgg once. Also, would an Intel system with it's non-integrated memory controller see a benifit if I went for the Corsair ram with tighter latencies, the Twin2X 6400C3? I'd rather not spend $100 extra if it isn't going to make any difference on my system. Thanks.

Since there are so many memory issues w/conroe boards right now I was wondering, is newegg pretty easy going on their exchange policy or are you planning on taking the 15% restocking fee? I was reading through their policy and they said if the ram is defective they will only replace it for the same kind not another brand. Anyone have any experienc with this? I'd like to try out possibly some patriot ram, but I want the ability to return it if I can't use it w/my board.

If newegg is not the best place for returns (due toe 15% restocking fee) then who should I be looking at?

I'm a few clicks away from ordering the vanilla P5B, and I've got a question on memory. I'm looking to buy a 2GB kit to go along with the MB, but I don't know which one to get. I'll be looking to oc my 6300, so which RAM would work best for $200 and below?

Alright then, Corsair. But what RAM speed? Do I need to get DDR2 800 for best performance? Or do the other speeds perform just fine (in terms of overclocking as well as general performance).

For overclocking I say the DDR2-800 is the best bet.

Ok, so I just opened the box for the first time tonight and was just looking over it and found something interesting. I noticed that the board had a 8-pin power connector above the CPU socket and that 4 of the pins were covered by this black cap. My question is, do I just keep this cap on and use a 4-pin connector or do I use an 8 pin? I didn't see anything about it in manual so maybe somebody can tell me what they did. I'll post pics for reference.

Finally set up my P5B + Ballistix PC6400 ram and it's working fine, I was getting that BIOS error upon each reboot asking to press F1 to resume.
Flashed to 0309 and it's all ok now.
Tried to push frequency to 333 so my E6600 would be at 3ghz and it froze, had to clear the bios.

Most high end newer PSUs have 4+4 pin connectors, but you only need to use the 4-pin for now.

Do you know what the difference is? I'm using the 8 pins and it's been working fine so far...

I like both boards but one doesn't have an LPT port the other doesn't have a serial port.
I need both ports.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

For those of you with the P5B vanilla: how tall is the Northbridge heatsink? Just curious.
